― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 05:38 (seventeen years ago)
i like "portal". freak folk meets post rock kranky style with fine results. (strangely, it sounds like an american project)
― Zeno, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 05:46 (seventeen years ago)
I've enjoyed everything I've heard by him on at least some level but I'm slightly less enamoured by him after he pulled out of my friend's show a while back citing the unarguable "personal reasons", which was in fact that he'd been offered, and accepted, a support slot with Bardo Pond in London that same night
― DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 08:24 (seventeen years ago)
Kentish isn't he?
― NickB, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 08:42 (seventeen years ago)
oooh I still need to pick up the new one!
love his older stuff & cannot fucking wait for ATP New York, where he is playing... among many others. :)

never heard this guy before, but i'm digging this new song
new album coming out on thrill jockey
― mizzell, Monday, 7 March 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)
So this album's been out for a while now.
I can't be the only one who loves this, right?
― PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)
seen him twice, thought he sucked both times - utterly predictable looping/overlaying of acoustic gtr figures and tedious quiet-loud dynamics.
― Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 4 May 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)
Agree with Ward. I was really into him until I saw him live. I guess I'm just really, really, really tired of dudes doing effects pedal demonstrations. Roy Montgomery had the market cornered on that shit in like '91.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 4 May 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)
I think there's a lot more going on with Dorwytch than what you're describing but each to their own.
― PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)
Dorwytch is a brilliant album. His lyrics are sometimes a bit daft but that isn't a fatal flaw. A better album than a lot of releases that get bigged up by pitchfork. I only say this because they savaged Portal and gave it 2.0. Sonically it reminds me of a more bohemian Heartland by Owen Pallet and is as good as that album, if not as celebrated.
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)
Just heard Dorwytch for the first time last night and this person is totally otm -- amazing! beautiful!
The guy is insanely talented. Believe the hype. He has a voice for the ages, amazing lyrics and is one of the few who can successfully walk the line between beautiful traditional songcraft and out-in-the-dunes sonic headfucker-y.

Has anyone heard Third Mouth? I impulse-bought it from Thrill Jockey in a fit of excitement, but I'm waiting to listen to it until the LP arrives.
― two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Sunday, 8 April 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)
yup, i've heard Third Mouth.... it's not a big step forward or back, if you like Dorwytch you're gonna like it just fine!
― ilxor, Sunday, 8 April 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I really like Third Mouth a lot - you won't be disappointed.
― Conan The Asshander (Doran), Sunday, 8 April 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)
I guess I owe this thread a revival because I love Third Mouth! Sometimes his songs get a little samey after a while, but that's about the worst thing I have to say. Otherwise, love this guy, especially when he sings super low.
This is a good one from Third Mouthhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pY9wVhzsEuU

"mullioned view" is my jam on the new album, that whole arrangement is killer
― moesha my reflection (donna rouge), Monday, 30 July 2012 23:39 (thirteen years ago)
The end of "Mullioned View" is the best.
Also, this album has been a staple of 2012. A well-chosen impulse buy!
― passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)
"Andromeon" is probably my #1 favorite song from the whole album though. I love the vocal parts. Droney, beautiful, humming/buzzing with sounds. So evocative!
― passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)
I def still need to listen to the new one. Will probably do so this week.
Was thinking about Dorwytch--and you too, LL--while listening to the new Hexvessel a frw days back. For some rrazon, I want to lump the two albums together.

Having mixed feelings about the new Grumbling Fur single (video on Quietus today). It's ok, and I should like the video considering that it contains men in sweaters in the forest and little bugs crawling on fingers and whatnot, but the music just kind of bores me. It also sounds a little too much like Depeche Mode/Dave Gahan -- are A Tucker and D Gahan from the same part of England or something? Why do they sound so much alike? I am not a DM enthusiast, so the comparison is not a good one for me (although I can see how it would make their sound more palatable to most people)

I think Tucker comes from Kent and Depeche Mode are from Essex, so yes, same general part of the world, they're just separated by the Thames.
― Ralph Vogon Williams (NickB), Monday, 8 July 2013 21:11 (twelve years ago)
Is it that or some other quality of their voices that makes them sound so similar? Has anyone heard the rest of this album? Is it boring?
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Monday, 8 July 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)
It is the accents but also they're both a bit flat expressively, both a bit monotonous and maybe slightly nasal too.
― Ralph Vogon Williams (NickB), Monday, 8 July 2013 21:26 (twelve years ago)
I thought the last Tucker LP - which was great - showed a heavy DM influence, so no surprise. Link to the video?
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Monday, 8 July 2013 23:36 (twelve years ago)
I already linked to the video! I agree about last AT album.
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Monday, 8 July 2013 23:40 (twelve years ago)
Oops, sorry - dunno how I missed that! Thanks!
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 00:35 (twelve years ago)
I dig it. Seems like an extension of the 'pop' of Tucker's last LP. This song is all one big chorus, huh? Gonna buy this. Also, maybe it sounds like DM, but that video reminds me of, err, another 80s act:

― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 00:43 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, I mean I know there's nothing wrong with TfF but I never liked them either. I guess I like my A Tucker a little less poppy. I wish him the best! I'd have to hear more before I buy this though. Fortunately Thrill Jockey isn't Drag City, and maybe it'll be on spotify or sthg.
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 9 July 2013 00:46 (twelve years ago)
Enjoying this thing quite a bit, think the odd moment of poppiness works really well in the context of the whole album. Have never been a big fan of his singing, but on lots of tracks here, his voice is just one of many sounds rather than the main focus. Dunno if anyone else is feeling this but the somewhat creaky electronic elements and the whole sunbaked, windworn and general pagan vibe make it a good companion to the stoneage rave of the Holden album imo.

Just deleted a couple of attempts to describe that Holden record in words but there's a thread on it here...RFI: Border Community - Nathan Fake, James Holden, The MFA, Petter etc.
Good post by D4n S3lz3r:
Sherbourne's article is really otm. For the last few years I've been trying to pay more attention to a lot of stuff that's going and and while I'm generally excited by much of it, not that much really sticks with me. This new record seems to draw from/share so many current influences/sounds, but work with them without any need to shoehorn himself into a particular genre. Electro-acoustic ambient stuff with krautrock rhythms giving away to triumphant horn parts, cosmic arpeggiating synths, minimal influences, maximal influences, Aphexy atmospheres, one song that sounds just like Popol Vuh, a bit of hauntology etc. Without ever being afraid of a catchy melody, sometimes as the dominant part of a track, sometimes more subtly.
