i use the griffin imic that comes with final vinyl editing software (very rudimentary) for my ibook. don't know if this applies to the lack of mic in your mini mac but i assume so. works great for my needs. if you run the imic from your mixer instead of directly from the turntable it sounds a lot better. what kind of vinyl are you ripping? hook a brother up.

You need a USB audio interface. The cheapest ones are made by M-Audio, Tascam, and Edirol. The iMic will work too.

All of these will work, but you shouldn't get more than you need if you're just recording vinyl. eBay can sometimes turn up good deals.

surely just a cable with phono plugs on the one end and stereo jack (or whatever your sound card uses for its line-in) on the other.

something like this - $5

that's all i use. and audacity / gold wave as a freebie sound editor. lame for encoding to mp3.

my roommate has a mac mini and i'm pretty sure he's complained several times already about its lack of a line/mic-in

six years pass...

I need help with a problem. I used to rip my records through my mixer to iMic into my mac. The sound quality was very nice and clean. Now I have lost my power cord to my mixer and buying a replacement cord cost 70. and I'm not doing that anytime soon. So I bought a phono preamp instead. Now I'm going directly from my technics to phono preamp to imic to my mac. The problem is everything is recorded. The sound of the music is ok, but underneath the song are these unknown sounds, like it's picking up the working of the record player, and there's static or fuzz. My records are clean and I use Shure white label needles. I don't know how to fix this. Any ideas?

Your pre-amp must be picking up the noise. Have you tried plugging it in to a diff outlet than the turntable/ computer? What type of cable are you using? Try a different cable. Can't you run the pre-amp directly into the computer's mic jack? Or is your computer the kind with only headphone jacks?

yeah mine only has a headphone jack, so I use the griffen iMic for a sound card.
