What bands did you at one time try to convince your friends ruled, only to realize later that said bands weren't really all that great?

For example, i used to try to get all my friends into Mother Love Bone in high school, thinking I had found the holy grail of rock n' roll. Don't get me wrong they were a good band and all, but when I listen to their CD now, I'm like ... meh.

I'll never apologize for trying to get everyone I knew into AC/DC though.

bsj30 (bsj30), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

friends have tried to get me into bands that at the time, i was like meh, but now am realizing that i was so wrong. i have hated scott walker for too long! my cold cold heart is melting under the influence of listening to scott2 right now, for the first time. this is only indirectly related to the thread at hand.

carly (carly), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Heh. How about bands that are "meh" for everyone else but I still hear a certain thing in them that I really like?
But yeah. I used to make a lot of mix tapes for friends, and put a lot of things on there that sounded good at the time... I dunno. I remember one tape that I made for a girl I had a crush on that had a song from the Live ep that they put out right before Throwing Copper. She loved it, and when they became popular a couple months later, I was all a-glow. Now I realize how little good I did with that (I've since sold the ep). But I used to buy a lot of CMJs back in the early '90s when I was in high school, and there's plenty of embarrassing music on mix tapes from that time that I can trace directly to CMJ's alternative explosion (Ape Hangers and Gorrilla Biscuits anyone?)
But, on the other hand, my friends never got into bands like Yo La Tengo or Sonic Youth no matter how hard I tried...

js (honestengine), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

the meat puppets. i am not meh about their sst records but everybody else is like "not that good." i can't stop it from rolling around in my head. and war, how can you not like this i would think but i guess to each their own. i might care what other people like if i wanted to date them or something but at the end of the day if they don't like it oh well.

The Mish, but I still kinda love'em.

Now, I was about to say Living Colour, but fuck it, they were a decent band with some (2?) great (quite good?) singles. I have no regrets. Plus their cover of 'Memories Can't Wait' inspired me to buy my first Talking Heads album, which on reflection makes precious little sense.

My efforts were in vain. I had to wait another few years before I met someone else who liked them.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Living Colour, eh? In '89, for a week or so, I was convinced that 24-7 Spyz were WAY better than Living Colour! And said as much to a friend, strongly recommending their debut LP. Of course, I was fed up with both of 'em by the time of their respective second efforts.

ooh, GBV is a good one.

this has really set me thinking, something that was otherwise unlikely to happen today at work. i think i could mine a rich vein in the mid-90s, starting with Gene, who i travelled across country to see live - alone, because none of my friends could see the light -but who really were horrible and have comprehensively failed the test of time. a more obscure one would be a British band called Jocasta who i vociferously declared were the bees knees. i was wrong.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Joanna Newsom (or as I like to call her "Lisa Simpson on Acid")
Shawn Mullins (though I dug a few tues on THAT album)
Jon Secada (I was young)
Superdrag (Again, a few great tunes, but a lot of uneven ones)
Adema (Half brother of the guy from Korn, half good, like Korn !)
Collective Soul (ugh)
David Gray (White Ladder is decent, his other stuff is pretty boring)

Erock LAzron, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Now I could have told you that...

I sill like that first Gene album, you HATERZ! (post script: this is the last time I shall use the term haterz in earnest. Thank you.)

Anyo individual who fails to see the majesty isn't worth knowing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, Superdrag is right. I tried to get a couple of friends into them before realizing that they were hit and miss... (But they did put on an awesome live show). The Figgs are up there too.
Oh, and my first concert ever was Living Color. Candlebox opened and ended up being booed off the stage.

for me it was Big Chief and God Lives Underwater. It was the first day of 10th grade when I tried to convince others that these two bands were incredible. my hope died the second day of 10th grade.

I thought of a few more:

White Trash -- Funky rock band with a horn section. Remember they had that "apple pie" song in the early ninties?

Some other half assed band called "Baker's Pink." Anybody else ever hear of them? For some reason I loved them for about a week.

Big Chief and God Lives Underwater? I think I may have gone to highschool with you (and both had their hits and misses).
This thread is really a great big catalogue of bands whose music I sold off a couple years ago, wondering why I ever bought it...

did you go to Sandwich Secondary School in lasalle, ontario? (yes, my school's name was Sandwich)

Nope. Went to Huron and Community High in Ann Arbor, Mi. (though the geographical proximity may explain the similarity of bands).

When I was a kid I gave my mom a lecture (with musical examples) of why Miles was a genius. Over the phone. Long distance.

Patience of a saint, my mum.

I still love Miles, so this doesn't relate but it's a funny story.

I tried with no success to get friends into Microdisney. Remember playing some when we were sat around at my house, aged about 15, arguing about 'musical genres'-

Me: 'I just don't think you can categorise everything. I mean, what would you call this?'

My mate: 'Shit.'

I kind of sort of still like them a bit, mind.
