If I didn't know better I would think this was Poptimism Pub Quiz spam!

16th March - Poptimism Pop Quiz

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 11:05 (twenty years ago)

it wasn't, but seems a valid suggestion!

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 11:25 (twenty years ago)

the weekly Tuesday night music quiz at the Boogaloo in Highgate is, of course, the correct answer. questions usually ranging from tough to impossible, a broad spectrum of music covered including, unfortuately for me, jazz. great atmosphere, usually at least one well-adjusted musical celebrity type, or failing that, Shane MacGowan.
mind you, i haven't been for two years since moving south of the river, so it might be shit now. doubt it though, it was always a top larf.

Lee F# (fsharp), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 13:12 (twenty years ago)

weirdly i have a choice between the poptimism pub quiz, and one on essex rd, on thursday night

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Retro Bar on Tuesday nights, just off the Strand. Mostly gay. Anyway, that's where I'll be tonight...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Me 'n' Jerry gonna whup yo ass.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:03 (twenty years ago)

It's really hard to know how difficult to pitch the questions!

I think the Poptimism one will be good, yes.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

i think for a quiz to be good most teams should be able to get 75% or thereabouts then the last 25% sorting the men from the rain men

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Me 'n' Mike gonna whup some ass tonight. And then do the quiz.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Argh - wrong thread!

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, that was £98 well earnt. Tuesdays at the Retro Bar... best goddamm music quiz in London! So far!

(It went to a "beat the intro" tie-break, which I won by spotting Patti Smith: "Kimberly".)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 10:04 (twenty years ago)

xpost well, it might come in useful...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Monday nights at the Rosemary Branch in De Beauvoir Town (Baring Street maybe?) is generally pretty good, though I don't go so often because it's miles from wehere I live.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 10:28 (twenty years ago)

There's one at the Dairy on Stroud Green Road that's alright. There was an entire Byrd's round last time I went. I only scored 3/10 and brought shame upon my family. Some dude loner dude in pyjama bottoms usually wins it.

Mestema (davidcorp), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Those Retro Bar questions in full...

Shortish excerpts played of three songs from one particular year in each decade, 1960s to 1990s.

Half a point for each title, half a point for each act, one point for each correct year. Much strictness on accuracy of answers, no quarter points allowed.

1960s:

1. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix Experience.
(We dropped half a point by not including "Experience".)

2. Those Were The Days - Mary Hopkin.
("Hopkins" not allowed. Much anguish from other teams, smugness from ours.)

3. Help Yourself - Tom Jones.
("Just Help Yourself" disallowed)

4. The year: 1968.

The 1970s:

5. Love Will Keep Us Together - (The) Captain & Tenille.
(Unexpected leniency on "the", which was deemed optional.)

6. Sky High - Jigsaw.

7. Reach Out, I'll Be There - Gloria Gaynor.
(All use of brackets disallowed. The Four Tops may have had brackets, but GG didn't. Much dispute, resulting in the compere fetching her copy of the Guinness Book of Hit Singles, to prove the point. This cost us our next half point.)

8. The year: 1975.

The 1980s:

9. William, It Was Really Nothing - The Smiths.
(Leniency on comma, deemed optional.)

10. Self Control - Laura Branigan.

11. These First Impressions - The Associates.
(Answer originally given as "These First Impressions Of You", leading to much protest, another Guinness Book check, and subsequent revision. We knew the act but not the song, so lost another half point.)

12. The year: 1984.

The 1990s:

13. Paranoid Android - Radiohead.
(They played one of the slow sections. A surprising number of teams failed to guess the song.)

14. All Mine - Portishead.

15. Avenging Angels - Space.
(We dropped a full point, mishearing the vocals as female and guessing the Sneaker Pimps. Added embarrassment, as I actually own a copy of the CD single. How soon we forget.)

16. The year: 1997.

The 2000s:

17. Run For Cover - Sugababes.
18. Utopia - Goldfrapp.
19. A nice easy one to finish: Can't Get You Out Of My Head - Kylie Minogue.
20. The year: 2001.

Total score from our team of four (The Careless Spliffers): 17.5 out of 20, placing us in joint first position.

Tie-break involves one representative of each team stepping forward, and playing "Beat The Intro" with a mystery track. Artist only, no need for song title. First correct answer wins it.

I correctly identify Patti Smith (singing "Kimberly"), thus bringing it home for The Careless Spliffers.

Prize selected by choosing one of five mystery envelopes. £98 cash prize, or 2 bottles of champagne, or some beer, or 4 copies of the house DJ's mix CD, or the booby prize: 4 copies of "Chico Time".

I pick the £98 envelope. Much whooping ensues.

Recommended.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Mike didn't mention his team-mates: me, and the two people sitting at our table - a nice bloke and a drunk, deranged, aggressive woman. Not recommended.

davidsim (davidsim), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I can't see Carsmile being very strict.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I think I might find the accent on accurate punctuation in that quiz rather irksome.

Maybe I just found "("Hopkins" not allowed)" upsetting.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:12 (twenty years ago)

I doubt we'll be as strict.

Except on the Hopkins thing obviously.

The other thing that gives me pause is that this quiz is very SHORT compared to ours. Ulp. May have to edit.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Curse every rotten one of you.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Yes the pedantry of the Retro Bar quiz is a bit off-putting, though I still fancy it some time.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Tom: Questions didn't start until after 9:30, and the quiz wrapped up around 10:45. Because it was all musical excerpts, the answers took as long as the questions - especially as the "answer" versions were extended to include choruses/song titles. So I wouldn't worry too much about aggressive editing.

Stevem: But the pedantry is the best bit! Let's just say that it engenders lively discussions.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh OK, we're starting at 7.30 and ending at 3 am so that should be OK.

Naturally we will have a copy of the Good Book on hand for such 'discussions'.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Stevem: But the pedantry is the best bit! Let's just say that it engenders lively discussions.

OK you've convinced me.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Be warned though Tom, past volumes of The Good Book itself have themselves been prone to some stunning errors. In the '99 (or thereabouts) edition they listed the Stardust of 'Arianne' fame and the Stardust of 'Music Sounds Better With You' fame as one and the same act.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:56 (twenty years ago)

It's not been the same since Tim Rice quit.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

If only the quiz was being held in The Jeremy Bentham.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:22 (twenty years ago)

If only the quiz was being run by The Jeremy Beadle

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:24 (twenty years ago)

well, they've got the scary beard thing down at least

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Ha, my issue of the book is now 11 years out of date cos when the next one came out, I went to the bookshop, leafed through it, found 3 mistakes, and lost faith in that and all future editions!

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

mike t-diva - we were at the retro quiz last night. we wuz shit

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

QUIZ FEUD

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Hang on, were you sitting at the next table to us, i.e. directly facing the DJ booth? I can remember the next table insisting on the comma.

Mind you, so were we...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

OH BLIMMIN FLIP. yes we were on the one high table at the end by the bar w backs to the bar looking towards the booth. there was me and Pete BARAN off of ILX, and my good lady friend Carrie.

WHAT FULES. this is what i get for not FAPPing so much :-)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

hmm now i read that again i think you were up the other end away from the bar, with the benches against the wall. so at least we're not THAT fule-ish.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I know the table of which you speak... and yes, David and I were round the corner, away from the bar, backs against the wall, slap bang in front of Wendy.

Other ILXers in the room... wow...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

i don't think this would be the first time either

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)
