I'm digging this! Borrowed if from a guy at work....not a huge fan...have White Pony, like it, never got anything else....heard a couple others here and there....

Anyway....man, I know they got lumped in wit nu-metal but these dudes are total new wavers, even more than Linkin Park....

Tracklist:
Savory (Jawbox Cover)
Wax and Wane (Cocteau Twins Cover)
Change (In the House of Flies) - Acoustic (but cool with Radiohead space noises not boring acoustic)

Simple Man (Lynyrd Synyrd cover)
Sinatra (Unrelease b-side)
No Ordinary Love (Sade Cover)
Sinatra (Helmet cover)
Teenager ("Idiot" vers.)
Chrenshaw Punch/I'll Throw Rocks at You (b-side)
Black Moon (White Pony outtake)
If Only Tonight We Could Sleep (Cure Cover)
Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smiths cover)
Digital Bath (acoustic)
The Chauffer (Duran Duran Cover)
Be Quiet and Drive (acoustic)

This album is pretty sweet.

This isn't an official release, is it?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Given that "Sinatra" listed two times, I'm thinking "nay."

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's an official release. It comes paired with a DVD compiling all their videos. I might get one for myself.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

xpost

wrt double listing

that be my mistake, not the 'Tones.

Also, Sinatra is a Helmet song, not a b-side...

they're really gayin' up Simple Man right now! sweet!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Most underrated band of the last 10 years? Could be...

too weird to get full adulation of the nu-metal masses.....too metal or perceived as metal to get that much critical cred....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I like this band.

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

No "Say It Ain't So" = dud!

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

A Cocteau Twins cover -- man, these guys always surprise me, for the best.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's an official release.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEET!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

ned, the cocteu's cover is the best song so far!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

woah shit I gotta hear that acoustic "Change" and the Duran/Cure covers.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

The "Savory" cover sounds EXACTLY like the Jawbox version... but I look forward to hearing the rest of it. I still love their self-titled album from a couple of years ago, with "Minerva" and "Hexagram" on it.

Stuck to a Seat in the New Beverly (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

I was just about to say, the Jawbox cover is UNCANNY in its similarity tothe original - every little random guitar noise and scrape is there..

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Odd that their Depeche Mode cover of "To Have And To Hold" (from the "For The Masses" tribute) is not on it!

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Hey you're right! And that's actually what got me into the band...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I prefer the Deftones/Far version. I think it's incredible actually.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I think the harmonies (that aren't in the Jawbox version) and the harder attack on the guitars/bass (way more Albini sounding) makes a difference for me.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

"No Ordinary Love (Sade Cover)"

Does this one actually work? If it does, I would be impressed.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 6 October 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

I guess it's not weird that they didn't put "Back to School (Mini Maggit)" on it. I remember i had to trade in my original version (grey cover, white horse) of White Pony for the newer version (white cover, white horse) for that one song.

Incase you guys are unaware, "Back to School" was actually a part of the last song on the album, "Pink Maggit", but they made a shorter version of it as a single.

Man, I'm going to listen to that album again.

Voodoo Child, Thursday, 6 October 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

I have the CD single with the Sade cover. It's great. Great band. Always the kind of band that would step out and do a cover song that its peers wouldn't dare touch.

Glenn, Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

It always pissed me off that they were lumped together with Korn and the other nu-metal bands. This band has always been criminally underrated. Hopefully this record will introduce them to new fans who may have written them off before.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

Prolly they're one of the most under-rated bands of the last 10 years and Chino Moreno is one of the best singers of the last 15 years. Emotional but not in the Emo sense, loud yet gentle and compelling. Great story teller as well. Deftones could be easily one of my fave bands of the last decado, just that i keep forgetting it all the time.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

not as much "criminally underrated" as "criminally miscategorized"

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

It's being streamed in it's entirety on their myspace page

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 6 October 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

you guys are making them sound like some great "lost" band or something. they got good reviews, they were on the covers of magazines and on mtv, and they sold lotsa records. and people liked them! not exactly criminal neglect. or maybe you just mean underrated by non-metal people? or by people who thought they were supposed to be like korn or something and never took the time to listen to them? fuck those people.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

They didn't sell enough! DAMN YOU KORN!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

No, no...yr right in the larger sense that, yeah, like I'm sure The Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments aren't shedding any tears for Deftones, but I just have friends that aren't familiar w/Deftones that would prolly dismiss them out of hand, cuz of the nu-metal connection, or whatever....but yeah, they've probably sold a shitload more records than lots of people...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

the thomas jefferson slave apartments rule btw! bait and switch!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

they are definitely a band that people who listen to no metal would like. much like my beloved katatonia. my best friend lance listens to nothing but britpop and new wave music and he LOVES the deftones.cure fans in general would love them. same with katatonia.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Finally got around to check them out. This b-side comp is a great place (Sade AND Cure covers!) to start for people like me (who were scared off by the nu-metal tag. Where should I go next if I wanna check out one of their real albums?

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

BUYING/STEALING THIS.
Have you heard them covering Sade's 'No Ordinary Love'? Really works...

Actually I'm sure most people have heard this already but still...

VeronaInTheClub, Saturday, 21 June 2008 01:14 (seventeen years ago)

six years pass...

re: underrated / miscategorized discussion upthread: If this band had a different name they'd have way more cred. "Deftones" is a really, really terrible name.

I agree about the B-sides comp - p much good all the way through.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Tuesday, 15 July 2014 03:00 (eleven years ago)

the "savory" cover is basically chino + far, which is fun to hear. always wanted chino and jonah matranga to do a record together, their voices blend v nicely

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 July 2014 03:07 (eleven years ago)

Drive acoustic is a pretty cool reinterpretation with that (accidental?) nod to Massive Attack’s teardrop.
