What bands did you at one time try to convince your friends ruled, only to realize later that you were completely right about said bands?

Brag About Some Band You Cared About Way Before Everyone Else

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I got several people in my office into Pinback several years ago. Then last year, through some sort of connection, these co-workers all had dinner with lead singer Rob Crow - and NO ONE INVITED ME!!!! I'm still pissed.

Garage rock. Most of the bands I listened to in college in the early '90s sounded like The Hives. Mono Men, New Bomb Turks, the Fall Outs, etc. Then, 5 years after I give up on trying to convince people about garage rock along come the Hives, Strokes, White Stripes, etc.

i'll take Spoon as well, plus Trail of Dead for an Austin brace! i went with some American friends to see ToD at Lupo's in Providence on their co-headlining tour with Queens of the Stone Age. they claimed to be unconvinced and were there for the QotSA. i was most certainly there for ToD, and the boys i backed came out on top, bringing the house down and playing 45 minutes into QotSA's slot. i don't imagine too many QotSA fans came away converted because of that, but my friends were.

ToD = dead, ain't they?

what's to like about ToD anyway?, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

i have similar experiences to charlie, although my gf does tend to listen to me about new bands even if nobody else will

I second The Shins. Also Little Birdy, PJ Harvey & Lou Reed. Well they still haven't caught onto the latter two.

I actually like having bands all to myself. It's like having your own little world which others are clueless about. Also, there's a somewhat self-important sense that if they did listen & like them, they wouldn't "get" them in that "special" way you do. Because of course, the songs were written just for you. Maybe in a parallel universe.

the shins and spoon too! also the go! team, the flaming lips, elbow and the new pornographers.

see, nabisco, i get what youre trying to say when you link to that thread but i feel its a different thing. here, im talking about bands you tried to get your friends into and they didnt dig, but then later on they're like insane rabid fans about them. this isnt what the other thread is doing where its all "i was into this before you"... dig?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

deftones.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

I got a bunch of people into Of Montreal, then I got them into Apples in Stereo, then Olivia Tremor Control, then Neutral Milk Hotel. Now they like any Elephant 6 band. Weird.

As much as I brag about Dressy Bessy (especially "Sound Go Round") no one seems to get really convinced.
