Decent albums that for whatever reason you never will have the urge to listen to....ever again

Tell me if this has been done before. Too ambiguous to search...

The one that heads the list for me is Coney Island Baby by Lou Reed. It obviously is nowhere near as good as anything the Velvet Underground did or his work on Tranformer and some other solo stuff but it's not bad. I remember the title track being kind of cute and a few neat tracks here and there but otherwise I couldn't be more indifferent towards it. I have no urge to reevalute it and I don't think I ever will.

Similar albums that you will never listen to?

John Legend's "Get Lifted." Not a bad record, but I listened to it about twice and its never occurred to me to pick it up again.

J. Alston, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

i never say never. in fact, i probably played coney island baby once, put it away, and then ended up digging it 10 years later. or maybe that was berlin. or the bells. i know i was definitely too young and impressionable to enjoy disco mystic as much as i enjoy it now. and not because i am more of a disco fan now. i was always a disco fan. but i don't think i could take it from lou when i first heard it. i haven't played new sensations in a zillion years though, and it was definitely on my hit parade when it came out. i haven't listened to growing up in public for at least 15 years. i never did like new york that much. played it once! and saw it played on tour once. maybe it is time i revisited it.

I'd say a huge hunk of my collection falls under this category. Sometimes just looking at their spine or artwork is as good as listening to them, though.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

New Sensations is awesome. I have it burned for my car--probably listened to it 50 times.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Josh I feel sorry for your girlfriend.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Haha, scarily familiar. I've got lots of these, but Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted is the most striking, as I was smitten when it was released. The prospect of revisiting my soundtrack to leaving high school is just not very appealing these days.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

yankee hotel foxtrot

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Thursday, 6 October 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

every beatles album. all the who albums. pretty much anything i've listened to too much and have moved on.

dogonwheels (dogonwheels), Thursday, 6 October 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

"yankee hotel foxtrot" 2nded. pretty decent album -- zero interest in repeat listen.

also "either/or" - elliott smith -- really good album -- zero interest midway thru and beyond.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Any Jefferson Airplane. Unless it's in a Dr.Gonzo stylee !

blunt (blunt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Pretty much every Yo La Tengo album, with the exception of "I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One." Every single Jon Spencer album. The last two Pavement albums. Sebadoh's entire recorded output (though not every album could be considered "decent"). GBV's entire recorded output (see above).

Binjominia (Brilhante), Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

Every Radiohead album.

animeboi, Thursday, 6 October 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

Frank Zappa ... once very keen and had quite a few albums, but now, even when my son wants me to get some cheap CDs of Zappa from Fopp so he can listen to them, I really can't be bothered.

andyjack (andyjack), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

So many albums. Bingo on the Beatles, Floyd and Who. I'm not going to part with them, but I just don't imagine a time in the future when I'll say to myself, "Damn, I need me some Who's Next? rightabout now!"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

Probably half my collection.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

The Who? You're nuts - vital stuff.

For me : any XTC after English Settlement. They're OK, I just can't be bothered really.

Wire's Pink Flag. Liked it at first, but the pristine monotony of it all soon overwhelmed me and I sold it after less than a year. Then a coupla years later I found the CD version second-hand at a great price, so I gave it another try: Nothing. And Chairs Missing and 154 both left me absolutely cold from day one. Never heard any of their '80s stuff and certainly don't intend to.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

'college dropout'
'entertainment!'
'metal box'

and many other '01-'05 must-haves.

"Are you going to bed, honey? I'm just going to sit here in the dark and listen to The Wall for a bit. I'll be in there in a little while."

Oh big time. I loved The Wall. I even was stupid enough to by that live Wall boxset a couple of years back (utterly, abjectly worthless). But, honestly, I can't imagine listening to it again anytime soon. Moreover, it's one of those records you kinda have to listen to in its entirety...and, really, who's got that kinda time?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

hah. too many to list. many grunge era rock albums and lots of classic rock.

burnt the fuck out.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Classic Aerosmith Stuff: The first album and "Draw the Line" especially. I might just pull out "Rocks" one of these days.

Some Kiss albums: "Love Gun," "Hotter than Hell" "Dressed to Kill"

The Cult: "Sonic Temple"

Green Day: "Dookie"

bsj30 (bsj30), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

They day I lose the urge to hear Dressed to Kill is the day I stop enjoying breathing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Any The The album, I like most of them, just no desire.

svend (svend), Thursday, 6 October 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I put the Kiss in there mostly to get your reaction Alex in NYC.

"Josh I feel sorry for your girlfriend."

-- oops (don'temailmenicelad...), October 6th, 2005 1:50 AM. (later)

You reckon maybe sometimes he just looks at her spine or artwork rather than actually listening to her?

Hmmmm. I wonder if that might work....

Wolf Parade

feminazi (feminazi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Alex in NYC, I have to ask--do you keep CDs on principle? I get the feeling you're not a big sell-back guy.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

The Pixies - all of 'em. I know they're really quite interesting, but their music has never rewarded much listening past the initial visceral thrill. Can you imagine yourself wanting to hear "Money Gone to Heaven" again?

Talib Kweli / Mos Def / Rawkus stuff.

Malkmus solo stuff.

I find it really hard to listen to Beatles albums,. cos I always just end up wondering why they're supposed to be considered so good. I like the myth, but the music never lives up. And I hate the drumming (made wrse by the way those later albums were recorded).

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

"yankee hotel foxtrot" 2nded. pretty decent album -- zero interest in repeat listen.

Thirded, in fact that's the album that came to mind when opening this thread.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Can you imagine yourself wanting to hear "Money Gone to Heaven" again?

Um, yes.

Binjominia (Brilhante), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

It's critically unassailable to the point where 'decent' doesn't apply, but I heard the Velvet's banana album often enough in the 80's that I'm truly, truly sick of the fucking thing and wince at the very sight of it.

I've often been in the situation where people who I have very little in common with in terms of musical taste will stick this on as an ice breaker and I just have to sit there, smile and hope my teeth aren't grinding audibly.

Soukesian, Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Alex in NYC, I have to ask--do you keep CDs on principle? I get the feeling you're not a big sell-back guy.

I'm becoming less of a keep-on-principle guy. Space is a vanishing premium in our home, so I've taken to parting with lots of stuff I'd have otherwsise have kept solely for its "significance" (or some other equally ridiculous reason).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Nirvana. Though maybe I'll get nostalgic in a decade or so.
All Beck's stuff except "Mellow Gold".

veritay, Friday, 7 October 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Seconded : VU (apart from Loaded, which is majestic). Pixies, yes them too. Pulp.

I wouldn't say I'm sick of it, but I can't imagine ever playing it again, even tho when I first heard it it was my most favourite thing ever. I used to think "Pet Sounds" was great but I can't bring myself to listen to that anymore too.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 October 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

yankee hotel foxtrot

-- älänbänänä (aaaaaathatsfivea...), October 6th, 2005.

that album was made for a thread like this. FOURTHED.

"kamera's" still a catchy song, though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 7 October 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

"Money gone to heaven"? I didn't think you could take it when you went...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 October 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

The Smiths

All of the albums. I know they're great and they meant a lot to me. If I hear individual tracks out or on the radio I think they stand up. But I cannot ever imagine wanting to put on a Smiths record.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Friday, 7 October 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

you might get drunk and do it though. maybe.

I'm pretty sure this is the only reason I keep old CDs. It's not necessarily just being drunk, but sometimes it kicks ass to be looking through old albums and find one that you haven't listened to or thought about for a few years and suddenly get back into it again.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Friday, 7 October 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska," the First Annual Report of Throbbing Gristle, "Lady is a Cat" by Antioch Arrow, and any one of the first four albums by Cheap Trick, bless their hearts.
