Queen Of The Boots - Kylie Justifies Entire Scene

Kylie at the Brits last night performed what can only be described as a bootleg version of Can't Get You Out Of My Head vs Blue Monday which could only have been conceived with awareness of the scene (and an actual boot prototype of this exists) and it was brilliant and has brought the entire thing into the mainstream. Lyrically and harmonically relevant, beautifully executed - why, HALLELUJAH, I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!!!!!! I RECANT! I'M A BELIEVER!!

And the ten million or so who are going to watch it tonight! Now things are getting exciting again!

Blimey and me without a TV.

Ten million viewing figures for the Brit awards Marcello? Are you sure? I thought it was one of those we-have-to-put-it-on things that gets five or so.

The worst bootleg I've yet heard (worst for non technical reasons that is) is one of CGYOOMH with Depeche Mode's "I Feel You" on top - ugh.

But the one that mixes "just can't get enough" with "purple pills" is ace.

chris, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would like to hear that despite not caring a tinker's for the brits. largely cos i still think that cgyoomyh is hugely overrated (it's an OK song god-damnit, nothing special). ta for "heads up" (as i think the kids say)

Hmmm, as one of Marcello's silent cheerleaders on the KOTB thread, I have to raise my eyebrows at this Damascene (sp?) conversion based on one performance (altho' I was also predicting it!). To clarify: I generally enjoy and find these boots inspired (and inspiring) - as I said on my own thread. But I still think M was picking at something important in that other thread which got lost in the arguments about demographics, pop vs. underground, etc. Tom summed up that important point quite well: okay, this (bootlegs) is not new, but that only matters if you can explain what was 'new' about its precursors (I am working on this, BTW).

Anyway, it looks like we can all agree that even if it's not new it is at least 'NOW'. And since a lot of it happens to be fabulous, let's celebrate it.

Brits isn't on TV til tonight Tom (hmm, maybe we can get the pub to show it?) but it is interesting how a lot of reports pick Kylie's performance up as a highlight. More importantly you don't need to even hear this boot - as soon as it is suggested you can do the cut and paste in your bonce and realise quite quickly that this works.

Nice one Kylie.

it sounds fun and that, but i have to admit, i'm not a fan of Blue Monday at all (think its their worst song), and i didn't think Can't Get You Out Of My Head was all that either. oh well, i can enjoy the concept if nothing else hey?

gareth, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I'm going back to Isabel's tonight so I can get her to video it. Phew!

Tom, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

user!

I definitely agree with the point that Marcello made a while ago: that artists performing bootlegs of their own stuff is much more exciting than a proper bootleg. That makes Pink, Sugababes and Kylie so far, and if the Kylie's is as excellent as the first two I'll be well-pleased. If Aaliyah were still with us you can be sure she would have done one by now, but as it is I'm hoping Missy caves next.

Tim, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't agree at all - it's returning intentionality to the mix, a step back in my book. Sugababes is interesting precisely cos it's NOT their material of course.

Tom, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I tend to agree with Tom here, if it is more of a remix. Part of the point of the bootleg is the illicitness of it - there is a slight problem with oficially sanction bootlegs therefore. That said this Kylie performance combines the shock of the new (the excitement of hearing a new bootleg) with what seems like a genuine understanding of what makes the original tune tick.

Pete, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I suspect the Kylie thing is really good but I take issue with Tim's "more exciting" - it's interesting for sure but in a slightly different way.

Tom, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you can be bothered, Radcliffe's just said he's gonna play that tune on his show. Not played it yet (1:20)

Alan T, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thought it was crap.

piscesboy, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well not bad. not great, but not bad. unfortunately just confirmed that the kylie song isn't that good. Give me the "Don't Stop Moving/Billie Jean" mix . (Not technically what we'd call a boot tho)

Alan T, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What I like about the auto-bootlegs is that they suggest the artists are aware of how interchangable the different components of their artwork obviously are. I like the idea of stars buying into their own creative dismantling. If this becomes fashionable the thrill will taper off sharply, I imagine.

When I say "material" though I don't mean that the artist needs to has to be performing their own song. Sugababes = best example yet precisely because their exact creative contribution is so difficult to pinpoint. Likewise I like the way that between Redman and the Eurythmics Pink sounds a bit crowded out on her own track. Strangely the illicitness of the bootlegs doesn't really do much for me, though theoretically I can see its thrill- factor. Even though it's "official" there seems to be something so blatant and cynical about Pink's swipe that I find it more offensive (in a good way) than most bootlegs.

Tim, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well how the hell am I supposed to see this? Does anyone know when the Brits make it on tv stateside? Are they showing them on BBC America?

Ally, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope they show the champagne bottle fight between So Solid Crew and Westlife. The question is, will anyone notice if Brian gets smacked in the kisser?

chris, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If stars like bootleg mixes they pull in the remixers for 'mates' rates' ie. for free.
