Top ten reasons why you love/hate AC/DC

This is really a challenge to myself, since I love them so much but I'm interested in others' answers too.

Reasons I Love:
10. Bon Scott lyrics
9. Kick ass live show that includes cannons
8. Songs were easy enough for me to learn when I started guitar
7. "Whole Lotta Rosie"
6. The best rock n' roll rhythm section evahhh
5. Malcolm
4. They seem like unpretentious guys who really appreciate their fans.
3. Even their crappy albums have at least 2 good tracks
2. Their last couple of albums are a true return the their classic form
1. They are, in my opinion, everything a rock n' roll band should be, ugly, crass and loud.

This is tough but here it goes:
Reasons I hate:

10. Brian Johnson's voice has progressively gone to shit since back in black
9. Their set lists continue to be "greatest hits." At this point, I am sure their long time fans would appreciate some more obscure classics thrown in.
8. I love the song "back in black" but I am always underwhelmed when I hear it live.
7. Fly on the Wall
6. Blow Up Your Video
5. About half of Flick of the Switch
4. Angus's live strip tease routine (it's an unfunny waste of time if you ask me)
3.They include six tracks from back in black in their live sets

That's all I can think of for now.

Does Clem Bastow ever post on ILM? Cuz she loves AC/DC and top ten lists.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Top Ten Reasons Why I Love/Hate AC/DC - In ONE List
1. Sophomoric lyrics
2. Cretinously simple riffs
3. Schoolboy outfit/duck walk
4. Beavis & Butthead
5. They won't quit
6. Chesty ladies in their videos
7. "Givin' the Dog a Bone" - gross
8. That logo! (OK, that one's just a "love")
9. Playin' the blues
10. That (Those) voice(s)!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I am a deeply conflicted man.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

1. The riffs
2. The riffs
3. The riffs
4. The riffs
5. The riffs
6. The riffs
7. The riffs
8. The riffs
9. The riffs
10. The riffs

There is probably at least one good reason to hate them, but given (1-10) above, I can't be bothered to think about it.

Soukesian, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Love:
1. "What's Next to the Moon?" (both versions) is fucking brill.
2. "Cold Hearted Man" destroys.
3. Ronald Belford Scott was THE man.
4. They played so loud I couldn't hear the teachers for a week after one of their shoes in 1982.
5. Mal's Jet Firebird.
6. Phil Rudd only used the ride cymbal on two songs. Everything else is crash, crash, crash.

Hate:
1. They employed a bald drummer
2. Stupendously moronic Johnson-era videos

Matching Mole, Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Some guy claiming to be Phil Rudd IM'd me on AOL when I was 16. We had a nice, casual conversation, although I think he was disappointed that I wasn't an AC/DC fan, or really even knew that much about them.

(And there was nothing creepy about him, either, which makes me think it may actually have been him, for real. This was in 1995, when everyone was going online for the first time and relishing the novelty of it all.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Like The Who, they're kind of a band for girls.

Old School (sexyDancer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Love:

1. "I said 'Baby, what's the going rate?'/She told me to go to hell."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Love....

1. Angus Young
2. "Whole Lotta Rosie"
3. The bell on "Hell's Bells" tolls THIRTEEN times.
4. The live version of "Thunderstruck"
5. The gatefold photo of For Those About to Rock.
6. For never penning a power ballad.
7. "Shazbott, Nanu-Nanu" at the tail end of Highway to Hell
8. Bon Scott
9. Phil Rudd's filigree-free drumming
10. Who doesn't love dumb sexual innuendos?

Hate...
1. Association with bad movies like "Last Action Hero" and "Maximum Overdive"
2. "Money Talks"
3. Angus' hair loss
4. AC/DC purportedly dismissing the Punk scene.
5. The album cover of Stiff Upper Lip
6. ....

That's all I can think of.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Love
1. Bon Scott's lyrics tell me everything I need to know about how to get through life (until I start having dependents). Just thinking about one of the Scott-era tracks makes me happy, reaffirms my love of the schlep life, of waiting around to be a millionaire (even when it ain't no fun). Playing an album works even better.

2. I love that the songs from each year (of US release) seem to chronicle a relationship. in '76 he's meeting squealers & asking if he can sit next to you, '77 is mid-relationship goin' steady hell ain't a bad place to be, in '78 Rosie DUMPS him and in '79 he's ambling about post-, getting shot down in flames and getting by. Whatever status you're in romantically he's got a dude covered (again, except for marraige & kids and all that).

3. Rock'n'roll was perfected by Chuck Berry and all white people could do to the formula without congealing the milk into butter was make it dumber and snottier. Nobody did it better.

4. Two of their songs climax with Bon Scott unleashing some ungodly shriek as the music crashes in and the Young bros. yell "HIGH!!!"

5. The opening track on their first U.S. release featured bagpipes. Every other song in their original incarnation was simply vocals-guitars-bass-drums.

6. Clem Bastow observed (I'm paraphrasing) that Bon acts the part of a total yob but in a delicate, almost feline way - purring, leering, its almost effeminate. This contradiction is incredibly effective and her appreciation of it is part of why she should give me a ring if she wants to get a green card.

7. This may sound asinine, but when someone I love and/or respect dies, nothing makes me feel better than "Back In Black." If they could respond to Bon Scott's death with THAT track, surely I can get through my day.

8. "Whole Lotta Rosie" and "Shook Me All Night Long" are some of the warmest, most appreciative rock songs you'll ever hear from unashamed hornball rockers.

9. If they didn't invent disco-metal (live drums division), they perfected it.

10. Angus Young's been doing that with his neck for thirty years and it hasn't snapped off.

Hate
1. I can count the number of Brian Johnston-era tracks I love on two hands, one if I'm feeling cranky.

2. Brian can't enunciate to save his goddamn life.

3. Christ, sometimes I'd prefer Hagar.

4. "I'd appreciate some indication that Johnson knows the difference between his dick and the light tower." - Robert Christgau.

5. Disc 2 of Family Jewels is downright humilating if you watch it right after Disc 1.

6. A lot of friends didn't even know how much Scott pwns all until they were shown Disc 1. The whole Back In Black=their best album bullshit gets me furious (though "Shook Me" may be their best song).

7. "For Those About To Rock We Salute You" is a chore to sit through on the radio.

8. I really can't imagine them getting better.

9. I'll never know what those later tracks would have sounded like with Scott on vocals. I'll never know if he might have written something intelligent about marriage, kids, middle age, coming out (hey, who knows?!), or any of the other experiences he might have had if he didn't die.

10. The Jailbreak EP is full-album price.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

3. Christ, sometimes I'd prefer Hagar.

C'mon, man, he's not that bad. Be serious.

8. I really can't imagine them getting better.

Neither me, sadly.

I visited Bon Scott's grave last month!!

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Really? Are there mountains of beer cans in tribute?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to think there are.

Bn1 (Bn1), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

maybe adolescent balls-out rock isn't a niche that you regularly visit any more, but isn't it comforting to know that it's been perfected?

on the anti- side, it doesn't matter if charlie watts is ancient, he's still cool. it's tougher for angus and the lads.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Jesus Christ. Black Ice. So awful. I was gonna start a "defend the indefensible" about these guys, but there are always contrary/hipster rock dicks that make some claim that it's all about the riffs. possible worst band ever. including S.M.A.S.H, Shwayze, and Candy Flip.

Two reasons for love:
1. The Riffs
2. Mutt Lange

Two resons for hatred:
1. Brian Johnson
2. Their fans

The other day I heard a little kid tell his mom that "AC/DC are better than you can even think!"

BigLurks, Saturday, 11 October 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

Love:
1. Bon Scott
2. "Can I Sit Next To You Girl"
3. "Whole Lotta Rosie"
4. The "OI"'s at the beginning of Dirty Deeds
5. Bon's tight jeans

HATE
6. Death by misadventure
7. Brian gets progressively more creepy with time, lyrics more and more EW
8. Thunderstruck. Thunderstruck. Thunderstruck.
9. The legions of bogan fans
10. Goddamn US versions of albums that dick around with track listings, the RETARDED Jailbreak EP, repeating songs on different albums, goddammit it really PISSES me off

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 11 October 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

^^ point 10 is OTM. We have the same versions in the UK as the US. It really pisses me off that when they remastered all the albums they released Jailbreak still as a 5 song EP at the same price as an album, when they could easily have added all the tracks missing from the UK albums as bonus tracks.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 12 October 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

A song about having big balls is just plain daft and immediately excludes you from any legitimate discourse about good art and culture.

Wait, people don't like the Jailbreak EP? Why??

(It's a lot better than Black Ice.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 12 October 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

(Okay, I see the reasons up there. I dunno. I've never really cared that the albums are different in the U.S.; I heard the US ones first. And that EP has always worked great for me. And I've never saw the point in paying attention to any of the remasters; my turntable still works.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 12 October 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

Have never comprehended the love for "Thunderstruck" either (so Vegemite Grrrl and I agree on that at least.)

Also better than Black Ice: The new Rose Tattoo album.

xhuxk, Sunday, 12 October 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

My turntable's broke. And you're not missing a thing with the remasters, honestly.

Jailbreak EP in and of itself is totally cool...but buying an EP to get Jailbreak the song is beyond ridiculous. It should have stayed on Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. The EP's just...unnatural?

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 12 October 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't know the Tatts had a new album. Sweet! I'll have to check it out.

Soukesian, Sunday, 12 October 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

The new album is 10 good-enough-to-damn-good songs and five that should have been left off. And I have the Australian versions of the first three or four (I forget how many differed) albums on my iPod, hence no need for the Jailbreak EP.

unperson, Sunday, 12 October 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)

there are always contrary/hipster rock dicks that make some claim that it's all about the riffs.

2. Fucking BAGPIPES.

Hate:

1. Everything else.

its cool bro i'm a rugby league player (King Boy Pato), Sunday, 12 October 2008 06:50 (seventeen years ago)

Reason to love:

AC/DC doesn't care about those with iPods and still manages to have the best selling hard rock catalog in the US, period. -- source, NY Times, today.

Piece intimates Wal-Mart exclusive contract for Black Ice guarantees sales of 2.5 million, whatever the verdict. "The album's first single, 'Rock N' Roll Train,' is the most played song on classic rock radio stations ..."

Gorge, Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

A song about having big balls is just plain daft and immediately excludes you from any legitimate discourse about good art and culture.

Lots of rock songs -- not to mention hip hop songs!! -- are about having big balls. They just aren't called "Big Balls."

Dow 30,000 by 2008 (Pancakes Hackman), Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

1. lot of songs about balls
2. lot of songs about having sex
3. after christ devil comes
4. schoolboy uniform
5. no pretenses
6. shrill screaming
7. no production flourishes
8. their music just rocks
9. effort/reward ratio is very low
10. angus and malcolm young both weigh about 110 lbs.

Shushtari (res), Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

7. no production flourishes

This is not true. On the three albums he produced (two of which are also their two bestselling and generally considered their best) Mutt Lange would usually record the strings of Angus Young's guitar one and one separately instead of having him play the entire riff at once. This made it "rock" even more though. So the production flourishes are actually one of the main things that make me like those albums from that era. To me, AC/DC are first and foremost about the Mutt era though.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

Mutt Lange would usually record the strings of Angus Young's guitar one and one separately

I don't understand. You mean each string was recorded alone and overdubbed with others to build the riff?

Shushtari (res), Sunday, 12 October 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, that was exactly what he did. This is described in the chapter about "Highway To Hell" in "The Mojo Collection", I believe.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 12 October 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

Another reason why AC/DC are one of my most hated bands ever: the vocals.

Dracula Tells Superman What To Do (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Monday, 13 October 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

Not digging Brian Johnson kinda makes sense, but otherwise hating AC/DC is like saying "I hate the human body and all the wonderful things it can do."

BigLurks, Monday, 13 October 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

new album is 10 good-enough-to-damn-good songs and five that should have been left off

You like more of it than I do. About half of it just bored me. My favorite songs were a two or three that reminded me of '70s rock bands other than AC/DC.

xhuxk, Monday, 13 October 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

>My favorite songs were a two or three that reminded me of '70s rock bands other than AC/DC.

Yeah, no kidding. "Decibel" is a straight-up ZZ Top riff circa 1974, and there's another that's like a Physical Graffiti outtake (first disc).

unperson, Monday, 13 October 2008 01:13 (seventeen years ago)

each string was recorded alone and overdubbed with others to build the riff

this blows my fucking mind

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 13 October 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

reason to Love: They're kind of catchy
reason to Hate: Sexist, crappy lyrics, terrible vocals, wham-bam guitar thud b.s.

bands like the Clash and many others have shown you can "rock" and not sound constipated drunk and redneck.

cameron carr, Monday, 13 October 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 13 October 2008 03:10 (seventeen years ago)
