where is the hate for mecca normal

last night i finally threw out a mecca normal 7" that i got from K when they ran out of madigan 7"'s once upon a time (It came witha note from Calvin saying ..sorry, but ithink you'll like this).

there's no disputing that noone could like this band, but where the feck is the hate.

(i hate myself for holding onto that thing for so long (and kinda for wanting the madigan single too))

i know theres this: Mecca Normal ----- Classic or Dud ?
but feel free to purge yrselves now.

So much to dislike, but this kind of thing is pretty typical.......

“We are anti-authoritarian poets and minimalist musicians reclaiming our voices, taking back culture, setting our wild hearts free!”

Plus, they are still together and never go away.

everything, Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

actually, why is it soo easy to let annoying things like this go on living in quiet obscurity, yet spend hours and space on hating realatively benign things like ... the bravery ...

someone should start throwing knives at things that really should just go away, fast

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Mecca Normal were fucking amazing live the first time I saw them. David Lester's mini-guitar heroics, Jean Smith walking out into the audience and jumping on her guitar...it left me amazed. Then I saw then six or seven more times. They did the same thing *each time,* and it began to grate. I can still appreciate one or two of their songs from the Water Cuts My Hands/Calico Kills The Cat days, but I never, ever have to hear them again.

you just answered your own question: "relative obscurity"

yeah, know...

lets tack this up as a venting the furry of having just moved and deciding afterwards to toss certain records out the window

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

you do gotta vent that furry every now and then

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Otherwise the fur just keeps it all in. Insulation, you know.

"This is a very powerful record. I know, because I threw it out the window and it did $300 worth of damage to a car across the street."

God, I hate them so much!!! Good Lord how I hate them!!!

daddyg, Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

i first heard them on some toytown tape, actually quite liked it. but the more i heard the less i liked. the song they did for sub pop is far and away their most tolerable.

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Allow me to be the lone voice of dissent on this thread. Love 'em, even still. Some albums suck but as a band they have their moments.

sleeve (sleeve), Friday, 7 October 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

i like them like i like taco the wonder dog/dj carhouse mc hellshit style stuff

jake b. (cerybut), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

I only know a couple of their songs from compilations (KRS and Matador I think) and I like them, the lyrics were maybe a little clumsy and I guess I can see why they aren't hugely popular but the guitarist sounds great.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Love the band, have for years, and Jean Smith and I, while not close friends, have kept in touch for a while on line -- she's a great person to chat with and an always-enjoyable interviewee. Three cheers!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

i liked 2 foot flame a little better, but i got nothing against 'em. of all the things to hate, ben.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

well, according to Calvin, I was supposed to like it and lord knows i didn't. i felt like was letting indie rock down.

or some shit.

i don't hate them like i hate cat stevens or anything, joel.

i fear my residency at daddy's is about done (though occasional visits will need to occur). i'd have to take a whole diffrent train home. it might have to be the kingsland tavern now. 'less i return to my enids happy hour roots.

bb (bbrz), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Mecca Normal isn't that far from Madigan, as far as "feminist art-folk" goes, so Calvin wasn't exactly trying to fuck with you.

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Was not so into them in the 3-piece period, & found them descending into schtick by the late '90s. And then I saw them a couple of years ago and they were fantastic--they'd ditched most of the old repertoire and come up with a bunch of new material and techniques. Last time I saw them was last year, and they were once again incredibly good--this was the tour where they covered the venue with their visual art etc., and they were charged-up and powerful and had a couple of remarkable new songs (inc. one that was like 20 minutes long). There were six people in the audience.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

entirely true...i felt like i was letting him down. he was trying to help, trying to guide me. and i was a bad student.

what i really wanted was those outta print kicking giant tapes...i was always so sad to see them in the catalog and never be able to buy them

bb (bbrz), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

keyth (keyth), Friday, 7 October 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

so glad to see this posting. The first clue they are pure garbage is they are from vancouver and represent everything that makes that the worst city in north america. souless pointless middle class white apologist indie rock....all of which is fine if you have talent.....guess what they don't have though?

as that wee cunt from lucky charms was apt to say 'and i hate it tooooo'

tuvan, Sunday, 9 October 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

I read this as "where is the hate for macca normal" and was going to probably start talking about pro-Paul message boards and defend Ram.
