nerve, Friday, 7 October 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm not.

blunt (blunt), Friday, 7 October 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

the jesus lizard every time.

ps. no one has forgotten about these bands! "new rock fans" just have never heard of 'em.

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 7 October 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

jesus lizard

From Scratch Acid to "Liar" in 1992 that is. After that, apart from "Cold Water" and a couple others maybe, I can't remember anything worthwhile.

blunt (blunt), Friday, 7 October 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

"Down" was alright. Plus the cover art was ALWAYS good.

I've never been able to get into Kyuss.

Kyuss were fine, but they can't touch the Jesus Lizard. The two bands don't exactly have very much in common.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 October 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

yeah i was bored, didnt think this though, i only got one jesus lizard album 'liar' and a unkwown cdr which i think is one of their later albums, im biased to kyuss because i listened to bftrs through high school.

nerve, Friday, 7 October 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Kyuss obviously but I just love the jesus lizard too.

I'm sure the Jesus Lizard temporarily sold like Nirvana.

Vic Funk, Friday, 7 October 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Kyuss- like totally

tuttie, Friday, 7 October 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

ZR to thread!

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

"I'm sure the Jesus Lizard temporarily sold like Nirvana."

sure, when they did that split single with them! ;-)

both bands are totallly omgwtflol classic, but i don't know if they''re really comparable (besides being hard-rocking bands from the diaspora of early 90's "alternative rock"). i'll go with jesus lizard.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I gotta go with Jesus Lizard, though it's close. Mostly because I saw David Yow jerk off into a crowd at a Lollapalooza date.

(So... When's the Babes in Toyland vs. L7 thread? Or the Big Black vs. Nation of Ulysseus?...)

js (honestengine), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

kyuss would be the obvious answer if it weren't for jon garcia's vox.
jesus lizard would be the obvious answer if the songs were better...

eedd, Friday, 7 October 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

eedd OTM about Kyuss.

I never stopped to think about the JL's songs. I never thought about that early 90s Chicago rock thing being about "songs" per se. It's about great guitar tones and pounding rhythm sections and all that fun stuff. Which can obviously wear thin.

Jesus Lizard by a mile, though.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Kyuss. I got "Sky Valley" after getting into QOTSA and play it quite often. Must have heard the Jesus Lizard at some point but never bothered acquiring any vinyl. Somewhere in between Scratch Acid/Kildozer/The Cows? Great live band by all accounts, but . .

Soukesian, Friday, 7 October 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't think there's too much to compare these bands by, other than that they're both intense - their approaches are totally different from the ground up. That said...uh...shit, no fair! Yow's the better singer, but Homme vs. Denison is a battle the likes of which would demolish city blocks.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Jesus Lizard, I haven't heard Kyuss but vs. any other band the answer is Jesus Lizard.

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

KYUSS FUCKIN SUCK.

JESUS LIZARD BY A MILLION MILES.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I like Kyuss, but The Jesus Lizard is the best live band I have ever seen. They were muy intense. Duane Denison is also one of my favorite guitar players.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 7 October 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Helmet vs. JL would've been funnier. Stiff vs. Yaaaargh!

blunt (blunt), Friday, 7 October 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Kyuss was always ruined for me by that hair farmer lead singer. Too much cheese.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 7 October 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Sadly I never saw Kyuss but I did see Jesus Lizard and they were fantastic live. But Kyuss are in my top 5 bands ever.
It took me a long long time for me to like Garcias vocals. It was when I heard/Saw Unida that I finally started to love that voice. It makes much more sense in Unida than in Kyuss. I'd love to have heard Josh sing some Kyuss. But Qotsa have never played any Kyuss the 6 times i've seen them over the years.
