two part question:

1 -- does anyone know how to get in contact with either of the two members of noh mercy?

2 -- did they have other recordings besides the two awesome tracks from earcom 3? if so, i would imagine they would have had to have been self released. cassettes? anything?

this has come up a few times in various places and I don't think anyone knows where they are. Not even Bob Last.

There's some photos of them in the Search and Destroy collections.

I'd love to hear more if it does exist. I bought Earcom 3 a couple of years ago and love their songs on it.

What did you make of From Chorley?

Oh, and you know "Stupid Babies" is Adamski back when he was lickle?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

i run a little website catalogging those labels and get emails somewhat frequently from folks about the records. 9 out of 10 people point out the adamski link. i have no fucking clue who adamski is. techno eh?

the from chorley track reminds me much of the street level / fuck off stuffs.

We actually interviewed Stupid Babies just after that Earcom came out.... well, sort of: we sent them a list of questions and a tape and they recorded themselves answering the questions and sent us the tape back.

Unfortunately they didn't read out the questions before answering them or send the list back and we'd forgotten to make a copy, so we had to guess what we thought the questions had been based on their answers.

The best bit was the response to our question: "Now that you're in a sucessful pop band, do find loads of girls throw themselves at your feet?"; to which the response from the younger Stupid Baby (not sure if that was Adam(ski) or his brother) was: "Yes, and they crawl all up my legs!".

Noh Mercy are playing their first show in 30-some years this Sunday at the Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco. It's a record release party for a new release that compiles pretty much everything they've recorded. Copy/pasting from http://www.superiorviaduct.com/nohmercy/

Formed in San Francisco in 1977, NOH MERCY was comprised of only two women: Esmerelda and Tony Hotel. The band's motto was "No Boys On Guitars" as a reaction against male-dominated rock 'n' roll. They didn't need boys or guitars. They harnessed the angularity of DEVO, the punk/poet attitude of PATTI SMITH, and the art spectacle of ROXY MUSIC, all ground down to a minimalist core of voice and drums. Their only two previously released songs – "No Caucasian Guilt" and "Revolutionary Spy" – have long been considered essential recordings within Post-Punk/No Wave collector circles and by fans of other late 70's "girl" groups, such as X-RAY SPEX, THE SLITS, and THE RAINCOATS.

This album contains almost entirely unreleased material, unheard for over thirty years. Recorded by Fluxus artist and electronics genius Tommy Tadlock (TUXEDOMOON) during their peak in 1979. As prescient as bands come, NOH MERCY preceded the defiant queer rebellion of Riot Grrrl and the frenetic art minimalism of the early 21st century by decades.
