like suicide's 'frankie teardrop', like spacemen 3's 'suicide', like nico's 'the end'.

which songs destroyed your mind? which songs left such an enormous impact on you that you're scared to even go back in?

rizzx (Rizz), Friday, 7 October 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

if they literally destroyed your mind, you would be catatonic.

strng hlkngtn: what does it mean? (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 October 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

flying steel shrapnel from explosions LITERALLY destroy my mind. Songs, not so much.

"Failure" by Swans, "Summer's Last Sound" by Disco Inferno, "Only Shallow" by MBV, and "God Damn the Sun" by Swans (again) have all, on occasion, literally destroyed my metaphorical mind and metaphorically destroyed my literal mind, though thankfully have never induced honest-to-God catatonia.

Although "God Damn the Sun" has come close.

Also "Very Friendly" by TG.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes in life it's better not to approach "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. You could get worse.

blunt (blunt), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

"Murder Mystery" seconded. And "Hurt."

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

sinead's three babies

bb (bbrz), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

judging from his negative reaction whenever i'd play it, "melmac rock" by ALF came close to literally destroying my former roommate's mind.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

john how dare you talk about maxwell that way?

strng hlkngtn: what does it mean? (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

"jc auto" by sugar

"somebody's watching me" by rockwell

gear (gear), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Total Trash by Sonic Youth. I've lost a big chunk of brain cells thanks to the instrumental freakout section of that song.

Also, Roxy Music's For YOur Pleasure caused considerable damage to my young, impressionable high school mind.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Stooges "Gimme Danger", "Search and Destroy"
Vital Ferox- the Absolut EP (and lot's of other Vitalic stuff, esp. "La Rock 01")
Primal Scream- "MBV Arkestra (If They Move, Kill 'Em)"
Sir Alice "Bouda is a Material Girl"
Dalek "Eyes to Form Shadows"

veritay, Friday, 7 October 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Pig Destroyer will do this if you listen to them for too long.

Telstar Ponies - Aegis Falling

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Primal Scream- "MBV Arkestra (If They Move, Kill 'Em)"

yes!

and the instrumental bit of "total trash" sounds like the subway falling apart. awesome

Khalid of Space pt 1

js (honestengine), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

When I first bought Suicide's 1st album I put it on when I went to bed, woke up totally freaked out during Frankie Teardrop, so I think that is the best answer (as in the 1st post!)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

ARCHANGELS THUNDERBIRD - AMON DUUL

ddb (ddb), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Patty Waters - "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" and Giancinto Scelsi's "Anahit" are total destroyers.

Matt Sussman, Friday, 7 October 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

the one with the words (i don't remember the title)

come away melinda
come in and an close the door
that someone is your mummy
we had before the war...

i think it's called 'melinda' or something

nique (nique), Friday, 7 October 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

(minus the odd 'an'. i was nervous)

nique (nique), Friday, 7 October 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Chrome belong in here, but it's hard to pin it down to one song. The great albums are continuous psychotic episodes. Maybe "Armageddon" off "Third from the sun"

Soukesian, Friday, 7 October 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Anything by Vibracathedral Orchestra! I was listening to them late last night on headphones walking home from work, and the world was an entirely different place.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 7 October 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Chrome ! Gunter glieben glauten *rushes to dig them out of collection*

blunt (blunt), Friday, 7 October 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

the Butthole Surfers is a pretty good answer.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 7 October 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

also, DJ Shitmat

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 7 October 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Skinny Puppy - Download
NIN - Gave Up (fixed remix)

DJMonsterMo, Friday, 7 October 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

I can't remember which song, but the first time I heard the band You Fantastic was a head melting moment.

mzui (mzui), Friday, 7 October 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

The first time I heard Rammstein (on the Lost Highway sdtk) I seriously lost my shit. Now, of course, I find them completely cuddly.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 7 October 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Primal Scream- "MBV Arkestra (If They Move, Kill 'Em)"

For the first time in ages, I listened to "More Light" from the album of the same name by J Mascis and the Fog. Kevin Shields creates mayhem on this track. My mind was instantly destroyed.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 7 October 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

PRRMMMMMLLLL SCRRRRMMMMMM

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

The Velvet Underground's "I Heard Her Call My Name" left me stunned and reeling when I was a young high school lad after Lou's solo got done destroying my mind.

VU: Heroin

These are the prime "crazy Lennon" Beatle songs that win this thread.

--A Day in the Life
Tomorrow Never Knows
I Am the Walrus
Strawberry Fields Forever--

In Every Dream Home A Heartache by Roxy Music

Electric Storm by White Noise (may be off on the title by a little bit)

The Electrician by the Walker Bros.

Looking Glass by the La's: Like almost all the rest of the album, it's really just a demo of what it could be. I just wish I could hear this live up to its potential. The idea of sampling the hooks of the previous songs in the album to close it out is a great one and is used to great effect.

"Hamburger Lady" by TG

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 October 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Wolf Eyes - Stabbed in the Face

of course, this is debatable. would a stab in the face necessarily destroy your mind, or merely fracture it? or would a stab to the face not be strong enough to penetrate the skull? i am not an expert in this area.

Mickey (modestmickey), Saturday, 8 October 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Wolf Eyes - Burned Mind

oh yeah.

Mickey (modestmickey), Saturday, 8 October 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

Maggot Brain

suicide's 'frankie teardrop', - This song doesn't so much destroy my mind as it does crack me the fuck up.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 8 October 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

what's the most destroying Coil track then?

'Anal Staircase' seems obvious

rizzx (Rizz), Saturday, 8 October 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

anal staircase ...i don't wanna climb that lol

retrogurl, Saturday, 8 October 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

i think it's called 'melinda' or something

"Come Away Melinda" by Uriah Heep

If I wanted to be funny I'd answer "Total Destruction To Your Mind" by Swamp Dogg but in truth I'ne never been "right" upstairs since:

"Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 8 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

VU: Heroin
Beefheart - Frownland
Merzbow - 1930
MBV - Soon
Talk Talk - Ascension Day
Can - Father Cannot Yell

Brakhage (brakhage), Saturday, 8 October 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

The Beefheart track just happens to be the first one on Trout Mask. Your mind may well need two or three more tracks to implode.

Brakhage (brakhage), Saturday, 8 October 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I experienced this intensely psychedelic episode one night when listening to Maurizio Bianchi's Armaghedon. My skull dissolved becoming the vibrations of the music. And, for a short time, the ego took a back seat to just the feeling of it all. It was pretty darn heavy.

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Saturday, 8 October 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

"Achy Breaky Heart"

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 8 October 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

oh wait, it's my HEART that blew up and killed this man. Sorry.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 8 October 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Mercyful Fate - 'Melissa'. I think King Diamond's voice in general kind of destroys my mind. But oh how I love it...

Honorable mention: 'Macarthur Park'.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 8 October 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

"Welcome to the 4th Psy Ops Force Manuel Jungle"

I think i see how they're meant to be read, but they read funnier this way...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 8 October 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Coil, I'm sure I haven't heard the scariest stuff, but "The Sleeper" always creeped me out. this thread has been done so many times!

otherwise, Alex in NYC otm. there's another TG track I want to add but not sure which one it is, it might be "Hit by a rock."

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 8 October 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I will be in the first band to make a CD that will LITERALLY transmit air-borne viruses through the circuitry of the playing device, filter through the RCA copper linings that leading the headphone jack and eventually pass out of the cones in the headphone speakers directly into your ear and into your brain and BAM, your mind will be literally destroyed by the BRAIN EATING VIRUS.

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Saturday, 8 October 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

under a microscope the brain eating virus will most likely resemble R. Kelly.

csappleby, Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

"Half a Mind to Have a Mind" by the Holy Modal Rounders
"Edge of the Ape Oven" by Royal Trux
"What Are Parents" by the Shaggs
"My Mind" by the Misunderstood

Michael J McGonigalillicuty (mike mcgonigal), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Ohh wait that's "Who Are Parents" right? What is just as good a qustion of course...

Michael J McGonigalillicuty (mike mcgonigal), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I read that MBV used to try and put really damaging frequencies onto their early records to, I presume, literally destroy peoples' minds, although I've also read that the frequencies were sub- or super-audible and didn't actually record onto the tape. I've also heard that Throbbing Gristle once dealt with obnoxious neighbors by aiming at their house industrial oscillators pumping out frequencies which induce mild hallucination. Do these count?

Moaner - Underowlrd

elgolfo (elgolfo), Sunday, 9 October 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

fourteen years pass...

*bump*

Two Little Hit Parades (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 04:10 (five years ago)

“Underowlrd” is a great name for a band

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 04:56 (five years ago)

Einstürzende Neubauten - Headcleaner

(And not even for the music, which is indeed mightily pulverising and head-rearranging, but because the last time I heard it live, instead of the usual Gollum-voice, Blixa spoke-sang the last verse:

Wir aber, die jetzt die Gefahr kennen
Und solcher gegenwärtig sind, können uns
Auch jetzt nicht entschließen…

which absolutely destroyed me.)

Extractor Fan (Branwell with an N), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 07:07 (five years ago)

Honest answer in my experience would be music designed for raves. Or rather to be enjoyed while on ketamine and/or ecstasy. The people I know who still spend their weekends on raves (I’m talking people on their early to mid 30s) have shown signs of a destroyed mind and can’t seem to focus on anything anymore.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 08:12 (five years ago)

Headcleaner is a great choice.

The first time I saw them live was at the Astoria on the Ende Neu tour and at the moment with the metal clock-faces spinning and chiming they beamed out two very loud but ever so slightly spaced apart sine waves into the audience and the constructive/destructive interference between the two sounded like it was totally inside my head, a very strange experience.

Maresn3st, Wednesday, 2 September 2020 15:34 (five years ago)

Spacemen 3 are in the OP, but the song from that album that really turned my brain inside out was the more nuanced/minimal "How Do You Feel?"

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 15:49 (five years ago)

I remember my first listen to "Karen Koltrane" having an effect like this
