Nathan Michel's "The Beast"

Is it just me, or is this some new kind of music that simply hasn't been put forth before?

Brilliant Jon Brion/Jim O'Rourke takes on Bacharach/Van Dyke Parks ornate pop filtered through Max/MSP.

And I've been lead to believe Michel played virtually every instrument. The melodies, arrangements and sonic fuckery are unbounded!

What says other listeners?

This is a really brilliant record. "Status Dive"- what a tune!

I liked "Dear Bicycle" but this just surpasses it.

does he have a new record out? what has he done since "Mixed by Guy at the exchange"?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

oh I'm not sure about max tundra... I was just making a flippant comparison. in spots this record reminds me of max tundra, jim o'rourke, the badlands OST, and lots of other max msp style avant pop.

Max Tundra was all good and well, but he doesn't have a shred of the musical invention or melodic flair that Nathan Michel is exhibiting on this here "The Beast".

The more I listen to it, the more I get really excited by the Robert Wyatt influence and the completely bizarre odd-time signatures and clattery percussion.
