they shoudl be right up my dark and smelly alley. i don't hate em. they always sound so rickety. mebbe i listen to too much metal. all the rickety stuff sounds like a tin can to me. they kinda sound like the flat duo jets or something on the new album. like the new-rockabilly. actually i'm digging the song that i'm hearing right now. it is like a car revving up and than the alarm goes off. maybe i aint so big on da bass bands. not big on ruinz. not big on copshootcop(jeezus, sorry big guy) not big on, um, hugo largo? somebody like that. goaheadsayit i'm old. but i like da deehooferraseerratalocustracebannonwolfeyes "Pop" noize shit. i mean, come on, have you HEARD the new deathspell omega album? i didn't think so.

"they always sound so rickety."

Yes. The old Ruins bass player used to play a Steinberger!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

It sounded good.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

I got me a full copy in the mail today of the new one -- had a CDR for a bit but it's nice to see the artwork in yer hand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

I ordered the vinyl from Load. Dunno when it ships though.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

well did ya listen to it or what, ned?

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

I said I had the CDR for a bit, WHY YOU NO BELIEVE I LISTEN TO IT? It was good but I admit after a couple of listens nothing stuck with me afterwards.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

Ruins totally seemed like THE BOMB when that first album on Shimmy Disc came out. It was amazing. First the Boredoms' Soul Discharge and then that. That stuff was totally Tthe business at that point in time.

But then after a while it didn't seem like they were changing that much and so you really have to be into that stuff to want eight Ruins albums. I'm not excited about another Lightning Bolt album in the same kind of way. (I started a thread about this very topic, coincidentally, on the Noize Board the other day, but it got locked by an administrator.)

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

i loooove jon cuz he iz like the 13 year old brudder with a mild case of aspergersautismbymunchhausenbypoxy syndrome that i never had. ritalin wuz invented to smite him. maybe i just need more ritalin. the beer aint cutting it. and i need to be playing something on the playstation when the bolt is on. all i have around is jak & daxter though and i am sick of that moldy oldy.

It's only in my headphones right fucking now! And I just went out for an evening of tuff minimal techno. It was cool but this is basically what I wanted the whole time

FWIW, I locked Tim's thread because of inane list making, not the content.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 8 October 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

i like lightning bolt.

scott, have you seen em in the flesh? they are one of the best live bands on the planet right now. (note "one of" i do not want to fight you fuxx)

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 9 October 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

no, i haven't seen them. i have heard the raves. i believe it too just from hearing the records. i know my brother is a fan. or they are fans of his, one or the other. or both maybe. maybe they all love each other equally in spazzed-out bliss. ian, you should check yer local listings for the bunny/devendra show at webster hall. i think it is coming up. maria wants to go to the show in somerville where ever that is. near boston somewhere. i know kristin hersh mentions it in one of my fave throwing muses songs.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 October 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

i'm wrong of course. it was centerdale. wherever that is:

What means hallucinate? what are we supposed to see?
What are they supposed to want? get a job! you scare me
I sing here I'm alone here I'm with you over here
Marshmallow brain I need an umbrella
If I'm gonna stand in the rain
My hands are cupped and full of blood
My eyes are spirals I am on my knees and praying
That is how I pray cause thatis how you pray
Rat rat rat rat rat rat
Tongue thickens I am with those who eat drugs
Who peek over the wall and get shocked
Shocking is therapy
Electrify your head!
Pianos in my hearing Vincent, me ear is falling off
Who left me alone? What do you mean you're alone?
Goddamn wolves
No one has that dream
Hallucinate I need an umbrella
If I'm gonna go insane
I think she wanna be crazy pick a brain!
I think I'm running away
Oh boy, God? I'm gonna scare that boy again?
Not again
Centerdale to Providence Middletown to Armageddon
A road is in my dream Centerdale is in my dream
Drums! carry me over the wall
You! left me alone what do you mean you're alone?
I peek over the wall and get sick
Sickness is therapy electrify your head!
Catalyst I need an umbrella
If I'm gonna slit my wrist
Pick your hands up
Put them on your head
Move it around and say
This is too much it doesn't fit
Your feet say nothing but move your hips
Move your hips, move your hips
Rat rat rat rat rat rat
Mania

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 October 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

the outer burroughs of boston.. blah.

i don't really like devendra, scott! but i think it might be funny to see bunnybrains play to devendra fans. actually, that DEFINITELY would be funny.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 9 October 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

i think so too.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 9 October 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

All these spazz / noisecore whatever bands just get on my nerves after a while. I mean it's good for a bit, but then you realise that it's not really complex (apart from Ruins), doesn't rock as hard as hard rock and isn't actually very extreme. I sold off all but about 5 of the 15-odd Ruins albums I owned because, well, how many do I fucking NEED? About 5 I guess. I saw Lightning Bolt last year, OK, kinda fun but lacking in substance really.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Sunday, 9 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

lightning bolt are a krautrock band.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 9 October 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I was majorly unimpressed with what I've heard/seen (live video off the internet). Very clever playing yes, but incredibly tiresome.

Now, last weekend I had the chance to see Vialka from France (whom I'd never heard of before), who were amazing and did some reasonably similar stuff without the overwhelming sense of self-importance as LB.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 10 October 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

what you read as "overwhelming sense of self-importance" is actually "overwhelming sense of idealism."

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 10 October 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen them live, but they are fun music to have on at a party where everyone decides to go nuts and jump up and down and throw/bang on things.

If I'm in the car or on the computer though I'd rather hear Deerhoof or something noisy in a slightly less static way.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 10 October 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

Vialka are great. I think most of the similarity is in the setup, though, rather than the actual noise they make

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 10 October 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Posting anonymously because I know people in the band and Brian is a great guy and we have friends in common blah blah blah

But I'm with you, Scott. I don't get it AT ALL. I just got the promo and thought, "lemme check this out." I've never liked anything they've done, but was eager to hear this, their supposed masterpiece.

I, too, must listen to entirely too much metal. You see, I HAVE heard the new Deathspell Omega, and it rules hard. This doesn't - it sounds limp, without character, indistinguishable from Pink and Brown and Hella and etc etc etc. I've seen them live - it's a pretty neat experience - but nowhere near as intense as, say, Otep live. But the indienoise kids don't know anything about that. Good players? Yes, sure, of course. Good music? Ummm, not so sure.
