fine, i'll be the loser: did anyone see Ashlee on SNL tonight?

the first song she sang was introduced by a heartfelt thanks from her to the audience, during which she said "i wrote this song after my first appearence on SNL". the song was thus a very boring half-ballad about a girl who was doomed...blah blah blah... Very shitty piano, just snooze inducing. for the second song, she sang "boyfreind" (the new single) fairly competently.

im not sure why this needs to be put down in the public record, but i feel like it needs to be.

I thought she said "my last incident on SNL" with a knowing smile. And the song was about friends who leave in your time of need, so she was basically trying to tug our heat strings to feel sorry for her.

this was ok. i liked her faux-arrogance during the songs, but i didn't like how she followed her performances up with a sickeningly sweet, obsequious "THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!!" it would have been more punk rock if she'd just spit at the camera. or grabbed her crotch.

I bet you'd all love Ashlee if you know how many Oink invites she had.

Between Ashlee and Nicky Hilton, I don't know whose hair is going to break off faster. You can't keep going from jet black to bleach blonde and back again without serious repercussions. Unless of course you have a deal with the devil which, in these two cases, is entirely possible. This post is totally moot.

For a "singer" her voice was pretty shit.

I thought it sounded like something someone has sent to Kenny Loggins in 1979 to record with Karla Bonoff. (He turned it down.)

I liked her voice fine (in the first song anyway; the only one I saw). I still hear at least a bit of Stevie N. and Courtney L. in it. The song sucked though, and yeah, her hair creeped me out. And her first SNL appearance was way more entertaining, no contest. And I doubt her new album will be anywhere near as good as the first one (which I like), though I have hopes.

The Denny Vertigo skit toom me by surprise.
"Needs more envelope filter!" Jeezus, that was funny.

Am I crazy to think that Andy Samberg (one of the new cast members) almost looks like a male Ashlee Simpson?

I also noticed the new featured players were in about as twice as many sketches as many of the featured cast members. I think an entirely new cast would be a good thing.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 9 October 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

I think I only like Will Forte from this whole bunch. (The recent revelation that Fred Armisen is One Of Us, etc., unfortunately doesn't make his skits any funnier).

fred armisen posts to ilx?!

Horatio Sans is pretty funny, yet inept. I also like the blond chick who does the news and the girl who does Debbie Downer can be kind of funny. Wait, am I thinking of the reruns or are these people still on the show? The blond is hot, too. She seems like a goer.

Will T. (Will T.), Sunday, 9 October 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

The comedy was horrible -- or at least it was until I got fed up and turned it off, not long after the first Ashlee song. Maybe one or two okay Harriet Miers jokes, and that was it. The Napoleon Dynamite dude was disasppointing too, which might not be his fault, since they kept throwing dumb references to the movie at him which I guess were supposed to be funny, just because, uh, they referred to the movie? I had no idea. The news was pathetic; when will these morons learn not to laugh at their own bad jokes? (Who started that, anyway -- Colin Quinn? Jimmy Fallon? I forget.) And the Sir Mix A Lot stuff was obviously coming the second somebody said the word "anaconda"; why beat something so obvious into the ground? Fuck 'em. Mad TV is stilll funnier. Though yeah, Sans seems likeable now and then (just not on Weekend Update, where I gather he was substituting for somebody.) (First time I've seen SNL at all since the first Ashlee one, btw; a complete coincidence.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 9 October 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

mad tv isn't funny either.

keyth (keyth), Monday, 10 October 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

There I was, stoned at a pal's house and watching him show off his new HDtv.
"Hey," he says, "I think SNL is on."
I haven't seen that in years, I think.
"Hey, isn't that Amy Poehler? She used to be on that Upright Citizens Brigade thing. They had a couple of episodes that were brilliant."
"Yeah, and Ashlee Simpson's on too."

There's a feeling you get after an animal's been hit by a car and is wounded, dying slowly. It's the same way that you feel watching the jokes die slowly on SNL. For fuck's sake, Kel from "All That" is on there now. The one that did that fucking Happy Burger movie.

I respect their attempts to do political humor. But fuck, man, Clinton jokes STILL?
SNL is just another thing that it's better to let whatevs.org experience in your proxy, like Entertainment Tonight and internet sites that proport to have Ashley Judd nip slip pics.
