which do you prefer, the original modern john cale-produced classic on "the modern lovers" or the later hit version?

i much MUCH prefer the latter: better lyrics and a looser, better beat and an amazing fadeout where richman just babbles like a lunatic. if that were the version on TML it'd probably be my favorite album of the '70s.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

i don't know why i wrote "fadeout," i should have just put "coda" or "ending" or something.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard "twice". I've got the "thrice" version on 7", it's very long, but good.

I'm with JD. When I bought the single (the 'Twice' version) I played it over and over. I was a little disappointed when I bought the album and found it was a different version.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

Roadrunner (Once) = "Johnathan Richman" = Hit version -> "Beserkley Chartbusters Vol 1" album
RoadRunner (Twice) = "Modern Lovers" = Original UA single -> "Modern Lovers" album
RoadRunner (Thrice) = "Johnathan Richman and the Modern Lovers" = Live Version -> "JR&ML Live" album

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

(Oh, and once/twice were a-side and b-side of the Beserkley hit single, but you knew that...)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

YSI links are in blue. i have the modern lovers album, which has an 'alternate version' at the end and i'm damned if i'm buying a best of just to hear this one track!

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Can I vote for the Joan Jett version? Just to give it props, since it's what introduced me to the song and it really does rock pretty hard.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and the mixup version of the Sex Pistols and the Modern Lovers'

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Revive!

What the hell is this? Roadrunner once? Twice? Thrice?

It's definitely not the album version. Is it available on a CD? A bonus track to the debut reissue perhaps?

I said move over once, move over twice, come on baby don't be cold as ice. Said I'm trav'ling on the one after 909...

Mac & Cheese, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

The original is the best. The alternate version where he talks about being OK with the fact that he doesn't have a girlfriend is nice, but it's not in the same league with the original.

For the record (if there is one) Roadrunner was my #1 single for the 1970s poll.
