No, really. It's the most annoying, childish thing you can possibly do on what's supposed to be a board where a bunch of people get together to talk about music. And please stop bandying the word "relevant." Making some music that some people like is relevant.

Is this about sonic youth, pavement, or guided by voices? it has to be one of the three.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 10 October 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Sonic Youth, but it could easily about any of the three, and it's the same bands that always draw this kind of trolling.

No really, how many threads on the board right now could easily be dismissed as "irrelevant" if someone bothered to do it? Let's see, New Pornographers are touring again. Now THAT's relevancy. New Orleans Brass Bands -- the craze is just around the corner, I tell you! The Stones' new song -- but of course they're SO over the hill that it's cool to talk about them again.

I happen to really, really like Jim O'Rourke, at least when he's not making micro-listenable quiet noise music. "Insignificance" and "Halfway to a Threeway" are probably two of my favorite discs ever. I think he even has some songs that are fairly fun and catchy. I also think he's significantly improved SY after a downturn and they've actually managed to make two pretty good albums since he joined. I don't get the ire - is it his persona?

I like Jim O'Rourke in some contexts- I like his bass playing in the Sonic Youth live show- but he was ubiquitous for a while in a way that made him an easy target of hate. For one thing, he seemed to be the producer of choice on a lot of what some may have called "overpolished indie turds."

You can hate on any band you like. But calling something "irrelevant" is pretty weak
This is a good point actually and right after I posted the thing about hating I started to think the same thing myself. Saying "oh, that's so five minutes ago" is one of the lamest laziest ways to avoid having to formulate an actual argument.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 10 October 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

And what's worse is that on this board, even three years after that indie guilt thread was started, seems that "irrelevant" is usually shorthand for music that 'hipsters' like, or, perhaps even music that the most up-to-date hipsters no longer admit to liking and deride other behind-the-times hipsters for like.
