I used to somewhat respect Tiny Mix Tapes, but alas, with this review, I have seen the source of hatred

What the hell.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 10 October 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

What's wrong with that?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

The implication that his girlfriend isn't bored with him.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Oh OK.

Seriously though, it's a review of something by someone I've never heard of which makes me at least a tiny bit curious to hear the song even though I kind of fear it will end up sounding like Har Mar Superstar. Where's the problem?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Well. It's an album review about only one song. I don't download any music, so I read album reviews to hear if I want to buy the album. Maybe I'm wrong, but I kind of thought that's what album reviews are for.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

It could be argued the writer protests too much, and unevocatively.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it's not professional standard and obviously it's kind of a shock tactic thing, it reminds me of old NME stunt reviews (in an endearing way though). I don't think it's awful tho.

Mickey my guess is that if you're writing an album review for some little online site you can generally assume that most of yr readers have their snouts in the download trough.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Anyway it does talk about the album and it offers you some proper consumer advice too viz. this album is worth if for the first song.

On second reading I actually looked at the unicorns paragraph, which is total shite. But still, not worth its own thread.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Tom, if that is the case, why even bother writing the review? Why not just have a running list of new albums that might be worth downloading?

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Well why not indeed! I'm not defending the concept of record reviews, just that this isn't such an awful one.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

On second reading I actually looked at the unicorns paragraph, which is total shite.

I like the first half of it, about beats dropping. I must have skipped over the unicorns part the first time I read it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Writing a review based primarily on one single track is fine, but I at least want some assurance that the rest of the album is half decent too. I want at least some line that says, "Oh yeah, the rest of the album sounds pretty similar too." How many albums come out with one track that sounds really different from the rest? If I bought Spoon's last album based only on a review of the single, "I Turn My Camera On," I'd probably be pretty disappointed. The rest of the album isn't anything like it. Lots of albums might start with a really punchy first track, and then the rest of the album is, er, quiet. With that album, I have no idea.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

YSI?

fandango (fandango), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

The beats dropping was the awful bit I thought, like a bad stand-up. The unicorns stuff was a bit of a self-conscious stretch for a DiCrescenzo moment, nothing wrong with that tho.

xpost you don't think a track is ever worth an album price? My favourite tracks are worth loads more than a tenner to me. Anyway he does describe the rest of the album, or his literary-device girlfriend does.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

By describing the rest of the album using his literary-device Kevitha, the statement already becomes questionable. If we are to believe the narrator, why's he have the statement come from Kevitha?

If the answer is that Kevitha is real, and the statement is truthful, then God damn it, I don't care what Kevitha thinks -- you are the album reviewer, tell me what YOU think.

And yes, the unicorns stuff is god awful.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I liked this review - it speaks to the condition of the album-as-form right now I think; guy has heard the track he loves, doesn't care about the rest = guy is average music listener!

REVIEW: The Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun

lol i heard a track off this i think it is pretty tight but i haven't heard the rest of the album!! this album sounds like yr TOTALLY TRIPPING ACID DUDE lol i asked my friend joey what he thought, he said its dumb. whatever this is cool!!!! i like that guitar riff!! this guitar is SICK!!!

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I kind of like this album, anyway... it's not Har Mar-y at all, though it's undeniably Hot Chippy.

Stuck to a Seat in the New Beverly (Bent Over at the Arclight), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't want to sound too harsh. I do like Tiny Mix Tapes, and I read their reviews everyday. I think they do a lot of things right. This review, however, I hate.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

This review kind of annoyed me too. I really like the Chap. Both their albums have been pretty magnificent. Baby I'm Hurt'n is a good song, but why dismiss the rest of the album in the review like that? I don't get it. But hey if it gets people to buy the album I approve.
Go buy the album, it's worth it.
Here's a different song on the album: I Am Oozing Emotion. It's the only song of theirs I have on my computer right now.

HE LIKED A SONG.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 10 October 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

that's weird, i missed the unicorns thing the first time i read it too. maybe it's like one of those pictures that's all grey dots until you stare at it for a while or something.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 10 October 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

their attempts at humor in the news section makes pitchfork look like the kings of comedy in comparison.

keyth (keyth), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

On second thought, I don't like that he called it car commercial music, but that's redeemed by the rating:
rating: Baby I'm Hurt'n/5
