These guys any good? My girlfriend says she heard them in a store and liked them.

at first i was like, cute. the cuteness started rubbing up against my leg like a cat, over and over again, and i was still like, aw, that's still kinda cute. but then ultimately it left a open sore with cat hair coming out of it -- rubbed the wrong way.

Favorite band of 2005. The cuteness has a dark side. I love that Warner Bros. took a chance on them; I love that someone thinks this is marketable pop music.

I think there's an L.A. equivalent to the San Francisco scenes of Devendra, Newsom, and Jolie Holland -- it's a little more grounded in early Hollywood glamor than a forest or a shack. The Ditty Bops, Eleni Mandell, Jesca Hoop -- they're the starlet side of what's going on further north, and they're as hands-off and inpenetrable as their predecessors.

seven months pass...
New album, "Moon Over The Freeway", flapper jazz pastiches with country swing influences. Kinda fits in with the current vogue for faux-1920s pornography, I feel. I like.

The name is certainly DUD.

Wasn't "diddy bops" a nasty racial reference in Richard Price's "The Wanderers"? (Caveat: Long time since I last read it.) I'm NOT accusing this band of anything -- the descriptions above make me think I'd dig them -- just wonder if they know . . .

If that's the case I change my plea.

three years pass...

the latest album has a neat pop-up graphic in the CD, though they lost the album art Grammy to Metallica.

it's kind of samey to me. i went to one of their shows recently, and one of them was a total bitch onstage, which really had a negative impact on my perception of them.

I like 'em a lot.

one year passes...

That show left a lasting negative impression in my mouth.
