where to start with Sweet

so, i really love "fox on the run". what is the best sweet LP to start with?

I would recommend starting with this "Best of Sweet" record (yeah, the cover is ugly as sin, but it's a good album), and seeing which phase you like best. When I first got into them, I liked their early Chapman/Chinn stuff better, but after a few years of listening to this comp, I found that the later stuff was good too, just different. "Fox on the Run", incidentally, is one of their first post Chapman/Chinn songs, while "Little Willie" and "Ballroom Blitz" is from the earlier period. This CD might help you decide where you want to investigate.

Never really saw Sweet as an albums band so I'd always go with a compilation, although Desolation Boulevard is pretty good at covering their FM Rock/Peter Frampton phase. Of the earlier stuff, the run of singles from Hellraiser to Action is about the best, all recorded after Chinnchapp. The album Sweet Fanny Adams has some of those singles on it but is pretty patchy.
