Albums You Don't Listen To Because You Don't Want To Spoil Them

For me it's, among others, Radiohead's OK Computer.

I only let myself listen to this once every two months or so because every time I listen to it I hear something new and I'd prefer to keep that streak alive.

What are yours?

Can't do it.

I'm like a kid in a candy store. Not only do I play the album to death but I'll stick individual tracks on repeat. 2 months? i was sick of Karma Police the Wednesday after I bought the CD.

And I wish it wasn't so....

I'm with the No-Self-Control crowd. My favorite records are ones that, for some reason, I cannot get sick of. Among those are albums not really recognized for greatness. Like:

Vehicle Birth -- Tragedy Verbena -- Souls for Sale Rolling Stones -- Out of Our Heads

And, of course, lots that are recognized. I burn out on a record in two weeks, typically. The Unwound record last year and the Trail of Dead this year (which has now been in my changer for a month and a half without leaving) are a couple that I just can't get sick of.

Stina Nordenstam's "And She Closed Her Eyes"... I only play it seasonally anyway, in the dead of winter.

I have a friend who bought Zen Arcade and Mission of Burma's Vs. in the '80s and still hasn't listened to them--she wants to save them for when she really REALLY needs to hear them for the first time.

Spiritualized Royal Albert Hall album.

No, wait, I don't listen to that one cause it's crap.

I've got a couple of expensive 7" singles I bought on eBay that I haven't listened to yet... but that's more because I haven't plugged my record player back in yet. But as long as they remain unlistened- to, they could potentially be worth every cent....

Cocteau Twins Treasure comes immediately to mind, but several other records in my collection also fall into this category. "Two months or so?" Try 5 years or so!

Spirit of Eden & Laughing Stock. Paper goes yellow/brown when left on a sunlit window-sill.

Right now it is Ryan Adams Gold as I have already destroyed the brilliant Heartbreaker by listening too much to it.
But actually all music I love, for example Velvet Underground, Yo La Tengo and Joy Division, I try to listen to only in moderation. As I do not know any album which would not be spoilt by listening too many times to it. There are some bands which are spoilt by very few listens, e.g. REM.

I think if we compared our relative ages, it might become a bit clear why this might be true. If i was keeping stuff from five years ago on hold, I'd still be listening to the Doors...and only the Doors, cus Jim Morrison, man, he's the Lizard King!
