Is anyone? Or is she pretty much a done deal around here? Her new album is called The Greatest.

Bebop, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know she had a new album out. I liked her last one, although admittedly I haven't listened to it in the past year or so. I'll be interested to see what she's up to now.

jz, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know there was one, but now I do I'm looking forward to it.
Its a best of?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

hmmm...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

From Pitchfork:

"We thought it wasn't possible, but Cat Power just keeps getting sexier. Chan Marshall's forthcoming album, The Greatest, (due January 26 on Matador), continues the trend of her guest turn on Handsome Boy Modeling School's "I've Been Thinking", turning the indie rock chanteuse into a simmering Southern diva. Listen to her purr and just try not to want to make babies.

As previously reported, The Greatest was recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, with a murderer's row of veteran session musicians, including members of the Hi and Stax Records house bands. The record is steeped in the R&B and country traditions, with lots of horns and thick, smoky grooves."

Sounds good to me.

Brock! (Brock!), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

It really could go one way or the other, couldn't it?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

i'll admit i'm very curious. but who knows?

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

There's an mp3 on the Matador site.

"I'm a busy man so I haven't checked yet" - Texas guy on the Simpsons

Roger, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

I'll wait for the promos to come through. It could potentially be either a Greetings From L.A. for the 21st century, or the last 27 Van Morrison albums.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Yup, it'll be either Great or Irrelevant.

There's an mp3 of the title track here (as well as an album-cover I'm not exactly sold on). I can't listen to it till this evening, but you're all welcome to tell me if it's good or not.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

no.

(in answer to the thread question)

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

ew, that pink.

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

the mp3 is nice! possibly a little dido-ish, though.

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

she should just cover the entirety of big star's third and be done with it.

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

That title track reeeeaaally wants to be "Moon River," doesn't it?

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

I like her voice. I think an album backed by Memphis session hands with a more country/r&b flavor could be an ideal use of her talents.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
This has leaked. Hooray!

sean gramophone (Sean M), Sunday, 6 November 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

i finally realized why "the greatest" sounded so familiar. the "moon river" comparisons are right on, but it's more like "moon river" crossed with Dylan's "Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carrol." I think. anyone else know what i'm talking about?

Tyler Wilcox (tylerw), Sunday, 6 November 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Best album of 2006 so far? :)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 7 November 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Yes, definitely.

I.M. (I.M.), Monday, 7 November 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I like the Morningwood album more.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 7 November 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

OK, now I'm excited.

surest sign that there's a nu-ilx -- no one has called this record the grebtest yet.

bird-person-person (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 November 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

no one has called this record the grebtest yet

Don't you think that might have died out for a reason?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 7 November 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

perhaps, but not a grebt reason.

bird-person-person (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 November 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

This is a huge disappointment to me. I love how she's singing but the arrangements don't really work. (Still love the title track, though.)

Everything's very rosy-posy and superficial... prettily dancing around while Chan sings these lines full of longing. The contrast works great at first but gets really tiring after a few songs.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Monday, 7 November 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

I liked it, and it sounded like a grower. It definitely erres on the right side of slickness for her. Her rudimentary playing sometimes contrasts a bit weridly with her skilled players, but I think ultimately it works.

I.M. (I.M.), Monday, 7 November 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

"It could potentially be either a Greetings From L.A. for the 21st century, or the last 27 Van Morrison albums."

------combined into one (or chosen at random even) that latter's by far the best option! Oh combat! She plays better on her own, so yeah

Schwip Schwap (schwip schwap), Monday, 7 November 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

While there's been charm in all of Chan's records, she didn't really connect for me until "Covers." "You Are Free" was a grower, but a lot of the songs were propped up by interesting arrangements - take them away, and you weren't left with a lot of substance.

With "The Greatest", I think Chan finally has the support and the arrangements that her songs have been begging for. In other words, I have the polar opposite view of this record that Sean Gramophone has.

I think it's Chan's way of kissing "indie" goodbye, and flowering into this 21st century songstress that the world truly needs. But I'll wait until the new Beth Orton - she could possibly trump this. The new Edith Frost is pretty stunning too.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 7 November 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

anyone feel like YSIing the last three tracks? i've got the rest of it now, but the user went offline.

bird-person-person (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 November 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

why has this leaked 3 months before its release date? i remember the last album leaked really early too.

i dunno, jed, considering some of us at the m@t@d0r office haven't even heard it yet.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

The new Edith Frost is pretty stunning too.

Has this actually leaked, then? I've heard about half of it, and it does in fact sound pretty great.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the Frost has leaked onto $oul$eek.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm torn between waiting for the release and begging for the first nine.

The last one was her strongest album, I think, even though it didn't have her best songs overall (oh how I love "Still in Love" and "Rockets"). But this sounds like it's going to be a major departure in style, yes?

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

Brooker - I think I should be clear that I've got nothing against Chan "kissing 'indie' goodbye", but I don't think this does that. It's certainly not the Dusty/Dolly album that the press releases made me think it would be. Lyrically, it's marvellous, but the production isn't ("just") shiny -- to me it's also inert. I much prefer those old circling bars of piano to these unyielding and unshaded nudges of trumpet.

And though I love the drums on "The Greatest", I do not like them elsewhere.

Are You Nomar? = I think that some critics will say it's a great departure in style, but I kinda think that's hogwash. They are laid-back country arrangements, - against which I guess you could say Moon Pix was indie rock-style and You Are Free was singer-songwriter style, - but this isn't really the chanteuse record I imagined, or the country record. (Or the pop record.) To me it's Chan with a very different backing band, one that's got some twang and some sheen but which also lacks much soul.

It's possible I've not entirely downloaded the proper version, though -- do "The Moon" and "Hate" sound live (and different than the rest) to anyone else?

sean gramophone (Sean M), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

i like the looseness of the arrangements, but yeah, they are a bit stale-sounding. i wish it sounded more like the carla bozulich red headed stranger tribute.

bird-person-person (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

i don't think this is the END OF CHAN MARSHALL AS WE KNOW HER or anything... lots of great artists have had periods of semi-duddishness before bounding back in a big way.

bird-person-person (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

"where is my love" is the sister lovers track.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 24 November 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 24 November 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

i'm curious who all the young female indie singer-songwriters who sound like they're trying to be her are, or what the moves that they're making that come across that way are

thomp, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

I'm mostly referring to local stuff I see live in the Pacific NW with that comment.

sleeve, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

i think she's capable of putting out another great record. you are free is her best work yet, but it can be topped.

i really don't mind this neo-soul stuff, so long as she doesn't keep inundating us with cover after cover. seeing her perform live is just riveting stuff, regardless of the material.

possibly. moon pix is so much greater. and what would the community think as well. with her it seems that the more she struggles the stronger is her output. i saw her on the moon pix tour with the dirty three, elliott smith played with quasi as well. she was so detached, so totally somewhere else, it was amazing. she is mor now, totally forgettable.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 18:12 (sixteen years ago)

i really liked the Greatest, I thought it was a really nice album; my favorite is still Moon Pix though, and the first Covers album. I think she can do another great album, but I hated Jukebox, it just sounded like coasting to me.

akm, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I agree with that assessment

sleeve, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

other thoughts...even though I was familiar with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs before Cat Power (I had managed to avoid Cat Power for many years, while the YYYs are friends), when I started hearing Cat Power I think Karen O def. got some moves from her.

Also, they played Fortunate Son last night. Don't know if that's a regular cover for her, but it was fantastic.

don't get me wrong, i like moon pix and the covers record too, but you are free is such a great distillation of her sound. because the songs are so varied, it's the best representation of her songwriting skills over time.

borntohula, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

yes vocally, esp. during the more acousticy YYY songs, or even the solo acoustic stuff Karen used to do.

can imagine ppl doing this — but i dunno that it'd really get at her essential, er, cat power-ness

lived in bars is a really great song, i find it hard to write off someone who had that on their last record of originals

i guess she's in the same position a lot of indie songwriter types get to — how do you complicate what you do, bring in actual worked-on craft, without removing your idiosyncrasies or reducing them to schtick

thomp, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 20:48 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, no way would moon pix pt 2, 3, 4, and 5 would be more interesting than her actual last four records

i saw her with the dirty three also, at the end of the set she dropped her guitar and ran off the stage and out the back door of the club.

akm, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

Moon Pix is a dull album with one deeply fantastic track - "Cross Bones Style". (Though I'll concede "The Colours and the Kids" is kind of affecting and perhaps is what "Harry Patch (In Memory of)" should have been.) I don't see her career trajectory as one of clear decline. The Greatest doesn't always work, but it's a good album. You Are Free is far and away her best though.

Freedom, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

If I had to pick a standout on Moon Pix, it would be "Metal Heart" -- no question.

jukebox is decent. it has some interesting cuts, but isn't essential cat power. the covers record on the other hand is a fantastic example of her ability to make things her own, with "satisfaction" coming to mind as one of the most daring and successful moves she's made handling someone else's song.
