Is it possible that SKID ROW delivered the first rock album in history to debut as the #1 album in America?

Because that's what I just read. And I sincerely doubt it.

You mean, the first band whose first album went to number one immediately? Or the first band who released ANY album to debut at number one?

I'm not sure if they were the first, but I'm pretty sure the Row's "Slave to the Grind" was released the first week that Soundscan sales were used, resulting in the "suprise" no. 1...I'm sure, if sales had been tracked more accurately before, that tons of 80s metal bands would've debuted at no.1.

I believe this is correct. I remember an MTV news brief on this.

Yeah, the primary beneficiaries of SoundScan were metal bands and hip-hop acts. Elif4zaggin also did unexpectedly well upon its release.

Actually, the NWA album was the first ... came out the first week SoundScan was institued. Though Skid Row also debuted #1 that fall.

True, actually. Skid Row, NWA, Metallica, etc. all going number one like that were noteworthy indeed, and seeing Nevermind gain traction was also a telling sign, but it was Brooks crashing in up top with Roping the Wind that woke a LOT of people up (including me!) to not only a changing of the guard in country but just how big it had become away from the top 40 media radar.

Actually, the NWA album was the first ... came out the first week SoundScan was institued.

NWA debuted at number 2 and went to number one the following week. Soundscan had been in effect for about a month prior to its release.

I think people sorta had an idea of the size of Brooks' audience, because he was mentioned in many articles as someone who would probably benefit from the new tracking system just prior to the change, and just after the change acts such as Lenny Kravitz and Fishbone plummeted off the charts (from the middle regions), which people used as proof that the majors manipulated the charts to what they were pushing, not what was being sold.

I would assume that the Beatles delivered the first rock album to debut as the number one album in America, though.

I may be imagining this, but wasn't Doggystyle in fact the first debut LP to debut at #1? (A virtually impossible task, unless maybe the LP is preceded by a few huge hit singles, or if the performer is already well-known in some other capacity, as Snoop was in '93 thanx to The Chronic.)

That's not your imagination.

the first rock album to debut at #1 was Elton John's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

That spring REM's Out of Time debuted at number-one too.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Rock of the Westies and Songs in the Key of Life also debuted at the top pre-Soundscan.

re-reading my post I thought maybe I should've added a disclaimer or something to make sure people knew I was being serious--if I had seen that posted I'm pretty sure I'd think it was sarcastic. History is weird.
