Szigethu: Word has it that you have been working on your new record for quite a time and that it is almost finished by now. When can we listen to it?

KH: Yes, the demo material is ready. We would be the happiest if we could announce the release date as soon as possible. We will put it out sometime in the autumn but we don't have a specific date yet. We have yet to arrange a couple of things about it. But we have recorded about 100-150 new tracks. So when and how can you listen to the new record? We will play some of the new material at our gig at Sziget. If you like it, you can download it from the Internet... now that's cool.

Szigethu: What's the title?

KH: Oh we don't know that yet! (laughs) ...How I would love to decide on the title today! Sure we have given it much thought, we had a couple of ideas but none of them the right one... And we wouldn't want to be hasty so that none of these will be lost when we release the record.

Szigethu: Does the new material follow in the wake of A Hundred Days Off, your last studio release in 2002?

KH: Maybe the sound will make it feel similar. The sound design is like a huge painting... So we have already recorded the material and finished the album cover that has always been a trademark of ours. We are finished with everything but without being excessive. It's like creating an image of us in a broader sense. Since we have managed to make over a hundred tracks, we started to wonder how we could release all of them... That would truly be a unique record. Our contract with our previous record company has just expired so now we are free to make our choices. That's another reason why we are not in any hurry, we want to look around, revise our plans and we are constantly working to choose the most beautiful songs, find the best ways and that's wonderful.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 13 October 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Just release it all.

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Like, say, as a data DVD of lossless audio files. Sell it for the same price as a normal CD. Who would not buy it?

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

nice

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm in the mood to listen to them now.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
karl hyde just announce on radio 1 that Underworld will release 150 songs online. for some Underworld fans, including me, this is a dream come true.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 4 November 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah, all new, all unreleased. they will also release a CD but starting monday, Underworldlive.com will be posting mp3's. they have a huge backlog of ambient pieces that i'm sure will comprise much of these 150-180 tracks.

biz, Friday, 4 November 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

OMG!

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 4 November 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I was very excited about this until I got to the word "ambient".

Dan (40 Hours Of Everything I Hate About Underworld) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 4 November 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm even more excited about it now they've used the word "ambient."

Ned T.Rifle, Saturday, 5 November 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I can't get underworldlive.com to open - dirty.org is ok and points to it but nothing happening. Anyone get in and have a look? Sounds terrific anyway.

Ned, Saturday, 5 November 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

o c'mon dan, what's the worst case, 75% of the tracks are ambient? leaving you with 30-40 new underworld dance classics? and that's worst case.

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 5 November 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

I put up a link to their set from the Exit festival a couple of months ago where they played two new tracks that sounded great (here), but it doesn't work anymore.

Re-upping it now.

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Saturday, 5 November 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

It would be nice if Underworld had 4 or 5 dance classics. In fact they have 3. Slippy, Rez, Juanita. The rest is a decade plus of cod-serious unfunky bullshit. Like 808 State, c'cept not as interesting.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 5 November 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

oh go fuck yourself, paul.

not quite drunk, i'll come up with a real response or something witty tomorrow.

way to bring the party (mike h.), Saturday, 5 November 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

OK, here's the set, 36mb: http://72.29.65.171/~edesimuh/razno/uw_live_at_exit.mp3

the new ones start around 13:00.

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Saturday, 5 November 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

hip - a noo - now - now ?
"underneath the radar" was brilliant and one day i'll buy this album but not " born slippy" or anything else.

retrogurl, Saturday, 5 November 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

biz, Saturday, 5 November 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

over the coming weeks, we'll be rolling out full recordings of underworld live in sophia and at benicassim earlier this year, track by track. to start with you'll find the first two tracks up there in the audio section.

in the video section we'll be doing a similar thing with the performance from sophia this summer. two video clips are up there for you now, and the rest will follow.

we've also been adding to the historic archive. in the pre-2005 video section you'll find a selection of clips from electraglide in japan (2003), the werchter festival in belgium (2003) and somerset house in london (2003).

over time, we plan to add more to the pre-2005 sections as we unearth more material in our archive.

the other section is to be home to everything else. web movies, talking heads, stop-frame movies from rehearsals, jams and broadcasts - that sort of stuff.

to start with, we've added some stop-frame movies from the dirty broadcast, john peel show, music bank jam and a smithless-in-lemonworld recording session.

we will be releasing music as a series of downloads exclusively from underworldlive.com and wanted you to be the first to know.

the downloads will consist of 5/6 different pieces interwoven, mixed, blended, whatever you want to call it into a single piece 25/30 minutes in length. the releases will sometimes follow a rough musical theme (there's a dub influenced one already in the can) sometimes they won't - but the idea is to give us the chance to stretch out into areas we have only been able to touch on with traditional album releases, and give you the listener an underworld experience over the time it takes to listen to one side of an old vinyl album.

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

paid my £5 and listening to it now. is great uptempo rocking so far. wish they hadn't encoded at 192kbps tho.

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

holy god, this is all such good news

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Thursday, 10 November 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

the website won't take my credit card. lukas, hook me up.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 10 November 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

ah, it worked. never mind!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 10 November 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

i like this. especially the motorik-inndustrial track at 11 minutes in.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 10 November 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

am i the only one who bought made the purchase for the photographs?

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Thursday, 10 November 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

ok, this is basically a new Underworld mini-album and it is being roundly ignored. it's 50% of album length and is getting 1% of the attention. no justice no peace!

anyway Lovely Broken Thing is good through and through, but would be worth it just for the end bit.
