debate: bands who make a big deal about where they come from, or come from interesting places and deny that this is a big deal - or better yet create an imagined milieu from which they emerge (as in dylan/the band's america or t.rex & led zep's middle earth) are inherently more interesting than non-geographically-specific bands,

oasis would be better if they pretended to be arab terrorists from the DESERT who like the beatles

where are oasis from?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 13 October 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

if you are correct, then the beatles are inherently more interesting than the rolling stones, britney inherently more interesting than christina, and hip-hop is inherently more interesting than any other artform ever.

"britney inherently more interesting than christina"

I always thought Christina was more tied to a place (Staten Island) than Britney. Unless you're calling the Mickey Mouse Club a geographic location...

Britney is pretty explicitly tied to Louisiana.

It's an interesting theory but I'm not sure it holds up. I liked R.E.M. well before I had any concept of "Athents, Georgia" or "American South." In fact, back then R.E.M. would have made more sense to me if they were British.

(Or knew how to spell "Athens")

Isn't Christina from Philidelphia?

I guess both. From AMG: Born Christina Maria Aguilera on December 18, 1980, on Staten Island, her parents were of Irish and Ecuadorian stock and her father's military career meant the family moved quite a bit during her childhood. They eventually settled in Philadelphia, where Aguilera began performing in talent shows at age six, with considerable success.

christina grew up just outside of pittsburgh, which is not particularly near philadelphia.

Obv. Christina A. is from Talent Shows.
