oh jeez, i've just re-discovered the wonders of the midnight cowboy soundtrack after years of neglect & it's such a beautiful record - such a perfect combination of sophistication & bubblegum & total heartache. Are there any other john barry records this perfect? Also which of the Ennio Morricone soundtracks re-issued lately are worth getting first? i only have a ropey career retrospective which seems to hit an astonishingly fertile stride in the mid 60s then tails off into ghastly ad sountracks. (i don't mean the mondo _ series - they seem a little too lounge, maybe it's the trappings...)

I quite liked that first track on the Escargot comp. Then I discovered Elliott Smith tends to repeat himself. ;-) The Kids soundtrack was pretty good though of course most already knew of slint and the like. (Or maybe not, what the hell do I know about others?) The Rock'n'Roll HighSchool LP was rawking... There's this Wow&Flutter comp which has loads of post-rock (yeah yeah yeah can't say that) bands on there.

Soundtracks aren't my biggest love but there's been a few. Okay, Easy Rider, i might have been only 12 or 13 when i saw it on the big screen and it really made a hell of an impression on me, but even playing it today it gels pretty well. Jimmy Cliffs Harder They Come, Great! i love every track. Paris Texas, Ry Cooders odysey into nihilism. Sorry but Rock n Roll Swindle is about as contemporary as i get even though i've seen a few flicks of late with an array of decent interesting stuff but the memory is fading. Cheers...Harry

Dido, off the Sliding Doors soundtrack. I love that film.

Eminem, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Popul Vuh : soundtrack to 'Aguirre, der zorn Gottes'. That haunting opening scene, with the conquistadores descending the mountains to "In the Gardens of Pharoah" ...breathtaking.

Nothing much to be "discovered" from it, but Shudder to Think's First Love, Last Rites soundtrack is a really great '50s pastiche, with Jeff Buckley, Alan Sparhawk + Mimi Parker, John Doe, Liz Phair, Billy Corgan, Robin Zander, etc etc contributing vocals. Sounds like a gimmick but I still play it all the time.

The _Pretty In Pink_ soundtrack was largely responsible for my high school listening habits; that was how I discovered New Order, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, Susanne Vega, and OMD.

Unsurprisingly a gateway drug for me as well, if only because my sister played it to death. I think Dan and I both also got bit by the Sire Just Say Yes bug, which explains how we thought Nasa might have been onto something.

Just discovered the Skidoo theme song. What took me so long? Carol Channing sings Harry Nilsson--it feels so right.

I want someone to put out the Rita Tushingham/Lynn Redgrave Swinging London musical Smashing Time out on CD with extra tracks. It's super duper.

I wish I'd discovered all the songs on the Velvet Goldmine for the first time, that'd be quite a thrill. Well, I did finally come around to Shudder to Think because of it and went out and purchased the First Love, Last Rites soundtrack and Adam's right, it's ace, especially the Robin Zander song.

Most recent: some Powerpuff Girls CD my roommate has has gotten me to check out Optiganally Yours, Sugarplastic, and Frank Black solo. I imagine the Sire compilations would have blown my mind if I had heard them before discovering through other means all the bands I like on that label.

I nominate...soundtracks to Wim Wenders films. There's some really great stuff on them.

geeta, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jack Nitzsche's soundtrack for "The Hot Spot" (John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Miles) is amazing, and his "Cruising" soundtrack (Willy DeVille, Germs, John Hiatt) is much better than you think.

The Vibrators from this horrid comp called "I Hate Your: A Brief History In punk" (alongside excellent words for the band by Jack Rabid) and that same horrid comp also has a band The Only Ones who I cant seem to find too much more by. Electrock lp didnt discover any new artists but has amazingly dirty/good versions of MC5 songs. I usually dont care about cd versus lp issues anymore but Kick Out The Jams/Come Togther sound amazing on this copy. Hell That History Of Punk cd comp I mentioned goes so far as blanking motherfuckers on Kick Out The Jams.
Badlands Springsteen tribute left me witha desire to find more by Dar Williams.
And I have to admit sadly the first i heard of Rufus Wainwright was on a CMJ comp. I have to go watch Canada wip some Belarus butt now. bye.

I'll second the superb First Love, Last Rites pastiche. My favorite cuts are the "Appalacian Lullaby" with Nina Persson and "Lonesome Dove", which I think Craig Wedron sings himself. I like the way the songs were used in the movie, as 45's the Natasha Wagner character played on an old record player until one day she flipped out and boiled them on the stove. Wonderful, weird movie, directed by Jesse Peretz, the bass player for the Lemonheads.

I'm with geeta on Wim Wenders. Particulary Crime and the City Solution on 'Until the End of the World,' though I'd already heard a lot of their music; that song is killer.

Tim DiGravina, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just pulled out the "Trainspotting" soundtrack I borrowed from a friend many many months ago (don't worry, I didn't see the film) and both "Temptation" and "Born Slippy" were fabyoolas.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

_Just Say Yes_! Oh MAN! Those comps made me completely fall in love with James and Figures On A Beach. (Their albums made me fall out of love with them pretty damn quick, though. Yeesh. Although, "Accidentally 42 Street" is still a great song.)

I still say that "Magic Jewelled Limosine" is a forgotten classic. "Om shanti (om shanti)/Om shanti (om chanti)/Om shanti (om shanti)/Oh-wow- oh-wow-oh-wow-ow-ow..."

Dan Perry, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoa! I've never seen someone who's admitted to liking 'Figures on a Beach'!

Dan--Since you've got that Harvard email address, I assume you used to live around Boston/Cambridge? If so, it might frighten you to know that the former keyboardist in 'Figures on a Beach' is the 'Goth Night' DJ at Man-Ray. He's also half of the 'Future Bible Heroes' (the other half being, of course, Stephin Merritt.) Apparently they met on a mini golf course in the 80s, or something.

Strange.

geeta, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ooh La La", by the Small Faces, off the Rushmore soundtrack. Sing-along acoustic guitar wondrousness!

Sean, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The tapes that came with Lime Lizard pretty much change my life e.g. Come, Girls Against Boys, Liz Phair, Walkabouts etc.

The Shanti Project Collections on Badman: Kristin Hersh, Red House Painters, Edith Frost.

The latest Comes With A Smile made me go out and buy a couple of Lincoln EP's.

Ben Squircle, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This amuses me greatly. Is Mr. Merritt's next project hooking up with the remains of the Escape Club?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds plausible to me. Merritt meets up with washed-up former Escape Club members at a roller disco, records 'Wild Wild West' remake..

What's the point? Will Smith owns that song now. Underrated movie too.
