Yes, I still think "American Life" is quite good. The lyric is a little naff, but it sounds fantastic. And "Love Profusion," "Nothing Fails," and "Easy Ride" are excellent. The rest of the album I can leave, but those four songs means that the CD is not really the wash-out that everyone says it is.

Popist feet are nimble feet and guilty feet. I remember, when I was growing up in Edinburgh, I used to see grafitti saying "No popery" and "The pope is sexy". I asked my mum what "sexy" meant in that context, but she just laughed at me. But now I know; it was popery, or popism, which was sexy, because pop is sexy and forbidden, like the pope in a Protestant land. Pop is a "guilty pleasure" in a land where rock is the stern religion. But not when it's done by Madonna, because she's based a career on making the parallel between pop and pope, popery and popism, too explicit. You don't need to spell it out, Madge. You don't need to tell us that confession is like getting a blow job, or that pop is Catholic and rock is Protestant.

What Momus has said on this thread is claptrap, it's that simple, and just because he himself puts out records that are enjoyed by members of ILM shouldn't make him immune to criticism. I made a passing mention of his music, and basically said that he's entitled to have an opinion on Madonna. And there's nothing wrong with having a negative opinion of Madonna (that said, anyone who doesn't appreciate "Into The Groove" as one of the best records ever made by anyone ever.. well.. I'm suspicious), but really, that popist/popery thing is... well, moronic.

It is a valid argument tactic, if not a very nice one; anyone who has heard me sing and though I sucked would be completely justified in using that opinion to torpedo any comment I made about a popular artist's singing style. Granted, I would probably tend to think that the person making the argument was a cloth-eared asshole with no social graces but that doesn't mean that calling my artistic contributions into question after I've called others' into question is verboten.

Last night I saw this song on TotP. I don't know how it goes, it was not memorable enough for me to remember it, yet. Maybe I will one day, but I have still only heard it the once.

I think I liked the way that the video was 80s retro by an 80s icon, but perhaps I am wrong and it is not; but that's how it looked to me and it did something for me.

I am glad that Madonna is at #1, rather than someone I hate or have not heard of.

Momus' first post totally OTM, second one... can't really get with.

I like plenty of Madonna songs (most often the ones where I can avoid/ignore the overwhelmingly tedious meta-Madonna factor) but this is the one of the plain lamest records I've heard all year, up there with anything in the Top 40 rock/sensitive singer-songwriter+guitar world in terms of actual imagination and daring*. I simply can't hear the fun or the groove in this one. Just more try-hard butt-clenching.

*unless the implication is "daring for a woman in her position" which is such patronising bollocks. U2(!!) made better 'dance' tracks than this, with NO previous history (unlike Madge, who has been here before) and they're all getting on a bit too.

I've heard this in ASDA a few times and I think it's fairly cruddy. I absolutely adore Abba and think the "song" relies far too heavily on the catchiness of the GGG sample. As a child of the 80's I also adore Madonna but her ubiquity in the media has become tiresome. She she seems inordinately insecure for generation-defining multi-millionaire pop star.
