Which is the superior high-production psychedelic treatment of saccharine British pop?

Heh heh heh. But are you talking about the original MMT EP or the 'album'?

"Flying" is a worthy comparison point in its own way.

A slight digression....

1970 - 1962 = 8 years = entire Beatles career
2002 - 1991 = 11 years = time since "Loveless"

Alright, back to the thread...

Quality over quantity. ;-)

I don't have Magical Mystery Tour, but does it start off with "thumpa-thumpa-thumpa DA-DA-DA DAAAAA DA, DA-DA-DA DAAA DA".

I think not.

"Piper at the Gates of Dawn"

I do love both albums, but this is surely an odd match up, no?

I'd reckon that while LOVELESS does indeed offer a wide array of features (loudness and guitar crunch for the rockheads, pretty ethereal melodies for the dreampopsters), ultimately MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR is a more widely varied affair -- everything from the psychedlic dreadnought that is "I Am the Walrus" through sing-songey pop ala "Your Mother Should Know" though freaky trip-outs like "Blue Jay Way" and relatively straight-ahead fare like the title track.

I was talking about the album. It didn't seem like that odd a matchup to me. The feel I get from Loveless is a lot closer to that of MMT than it is to, say, Sister or Psychocandy for me. The concept seems somewhat similar. It seems like a worthy comparison to me. I might ultimately agree with Alex. Plus, I think MMT probably has more unique and better crafted songs under the production fuckery. "Strawberry Fields Forever" never stops amazing me.

one year passes...
If a band had released BOTH MMT and Loveless, it would be the BEST BAND EVER. HANDS THE FOCK DOWN. And the comparison does make a lot of sense, production-wise.

Long live Loveless. Death to (emotionally-retarded) mentalists!
