Also on the undercard, The Mission goes up against the combined onslaught of Ghost Dance and the Fields of the Nephilim.

I'm not saying that the Mission are so good that it would take two bands to take them out. I dislike the Mission just enough to enjoy the thought of two other bands ganging up on them and beating them up.

Eldritch and Murphy realize their mutual love for Bowie, so it's a draw.

The Mish are Leeds fans and therefore thump Ghost Dance within an inch of their lives. The Fields invoke Hastur and various elemental forces and disappear in a puff of flour.

(I actually own just about everything by everyone named here except Ghost Dance, who I've never heard, so I can't really be impartial. ;-))

The Mission, Fields of Nephilim and Ghost Dance: none of them are into my favorite goth bands. I suppose I prefer The Mission.

And Peter Murphy is God.

(OK, maybe he´s not God, but I'm sure that God enjoys Peter Murphy's music).

All is clear.

As much as I love Peter Murphy, it seems he underwent an accute humourectomy and is unable to take himself anything less than completely seriously, so the vote goes to Eldritch.

The Mish were always more populist than the Nephilim, who insisted on maintaining an aura of mystique and dread (whereas the Mish were at the best when falling down drunk and drugged to the gills). Muscialy, the Nephs were more consistent, but the Mish were more lovable. Ghost Dance don't even merit a mention.

No, Peter can laugh, even at himself. He just doesn't always demonstrate this.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just because Eldritch's stuff is funny, it doesn't mean that he intended it to be. Advantage: Murphy.

The Mission, huh? You know, I really used to love The Mission on those first couple of albums, back when I took things way too seriously. They were a TOWER OF STRENGTH. To MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. But, uh. Um. Can't say that I've got anything by them in the ol' collection any more.

Do you EVER sell anything, Ned?

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why would I do that? ;-) I sell off a few things here and there...like, once every two years or so.

He's like Fu Manchu: Too damned subtle and inscrutable. But he handled Nardwuar quite handily.
