Sice the voice of the Boo Radleys is about to debut his new band

I just got an e-mail where they have just released this news:

Also still to come are the answers to the many questions sent through the http://booradleys.co.uk Find The Way Out website, and we have further info and soundclips from sice's new band paper lung on the way too.

boo radleys & paper lung

So considering that I'm one of the biggest Boo Radleys fans that there is I'm going completely out of my mind with this news. The Boo Radleys are 100% Martin Carr's band but his electronic stuff now as 'bravecaptain' comes nowhere close to anything he had done with his former guitar band. Sice did release a very good album in 1996 under the name Eggman but the Boos quickly followed that with yet another masterpiece called C'mon Kids and even I forgot about it for awhile. Since the Boos disband in 1999 Sice has been virtually gone from music. He did show up three times in 2004, twice for Meister and once on his old buddy's 'bravecaptain' album. When I heard him on last year's 'bravecaptain' record I was thinking music is being deprived of one of the best voices that there is today and maybe one day he will return. Today is a very good day.

BTW, Martin Carr is busy as well and has recorded a ten minute piece of music as a tribute to john peel which is available as a free download for ten days only, along with artwork which as always is created by bravecaptain himself.

new bravecaptain album:

the next bravecaptain album is also now complete and we will have sound clips and further info to follow. although the album is in the bag and sounding good there is the usual business of artwork and release schedule still to be organised, full details of which will be on the site as soon as we have them.

the tracklisting for the album is as follows:

1. whatever happened to the fingertip saint?
2. i don't know any better
3. punk rock
4. ocean
5. campaign
6. european man
7. it's what we make it
8. oh you
9. reason to escape
10. jerusalem

Is Sice still living in Tring? If, indeed, he ever was.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

It should of read: Boo Radleys & Amp = Paper Lung

I also have every song talked about, Eggman ect on 5lsk along with everything the Boo Raldeys have ever put out. Always hanging out in the ILM room.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

I personally have no idea what is up with Sice. I know a bit about Martin Carr but Sice's life wasn’t as well known.

I had the opportunity to meet both Sice and Martin at Lollapalooza Los Angeles 1994 but I didn't and couldn't go through with it, my friend Mike talked to Sice. Had no idea at the time that my love for the Boo Radleys would grow more passionate and even deeper.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

I like that the new Brave Captain album is not 30 odd tracks.

Less, better, please.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

YAY! Eggman was great. I was listening to the Boo's version of Tomorrow from Bugsy and Sice could give Thom Yorke a real run for his money if he were to audition for Radiohead.

Er, should I make you jealous that I had dinner with the band earlier that year and have a great interview with Tim and Rob from that evening somewhere on tape? Also saw the Lolla show too, good stuff.

Bonus and also found on the brand new anthology Find The Way Out and this is merely a B-side, blows my mind:

Hey, why not give them "Superintendent"?

Ned is my new hero.

Now I have to get into it a little bit. In music there are two people who I respect, admire, and could probably never go through with meeting. One is Martin Carr and the other guys name is Robert Smith. The main reason behind that is because I didn't want to be just another fan boy, ask for an autograph and go on my marry way, even though ultimately a fan is all I would be. I would love to go to dinner or even just have a beer with them and take in those moments and get into some sort of bullshit chat. Also if I never met them I could never be let down but I know that would be virtually impossible with these two. My friend Mike talked to Sice for like 15 minuets and I could of done that with no problem, stupid girls with their bitching at the wrong time. ;)

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Aw, bless. This is probably as good a time as any to mumble under my breath (for the 37th time on ILM) that I went to school with Sice and Martin. I've failed to dine out on that for the last 15 years.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

My friend Mary ran their fanclub.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Man, that "Almost nearly there" b-side is great. Did many (completists) buy that newish compilation?

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

ti can't help but be better than bravecaptain cause the captain is horrible and i really liked the eggman cd. but then he might get funny hats too.

keyth (keyth), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

His "eggman" album was a fine 'lost' Boo Radleys album, and I can't understand boo fans hating it. (Non-boos fans, fine if it's not yr bag).

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

I really wanted to, simply because I wanted it to do well but I already had absolutely everything on there and it cost £16 so I haven't got round to it yet. I will though.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't think many Boos fans hate Eggman - it's a really great little record.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Not many, no. But it's the 'any' I wonder about.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

the freebie 10 minute mp3 download is nice but i've forgotten it before it's even finished twice now.

bought the comp despite having 80% of it (i never bought that last lp and my £1.20 bid for it on ebay last week was unsuccessful) because, well, just because.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Hey, why not give them "Superintendent"?

I've been away.

Your right 'Superintendent' is a fantastic song and is virtually impossible to find since it was suppose to be on the scraped single of Kingsize. The Boos need a B-sides compilation in the worst way.

I picked that song because it's soo happy. "I can't wait until tomorrow, I don't see how I'm gonna sleep tonight…I waited months just for this moment." That also summed up my feeling with the news of Sice’s return. Dog Latin also brought up his voice and that song makes it shine through. Also it on the new Comp where the other one is not.

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 20 October 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

Yes I bought it and was quite a task to find, so very sad. I also posted a review on this here site but I copied from Words and it came out all gibberish and I hope no one really saw that post. You can see what I wanted to say here ( http://www.obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=9982 ) also the AMG review is up of Find The Way Out with a 4 and ½ stars rating and is a great review, right on the mark if you ask me.

I hate buying things like this and usually don't but there was two factors that went into justifying the expense. One is Remastered and it sounds amazing. There were delays with this comp but in the end it really was worth the wait. The other factors are those three songs from the vinyl only first album, and than you have 'Tomorrow' on CD for the first time. The big book that came with it is worth the money alone.

I downloaded that as well as his remix of a Bloc Party song. Haven't listen to it yet but will soon. I really need to complete my threatened compilation of some bravecaptain stuff, because some of it is really worth hearing. The problem being that most is rubbish so only if you have patience can you find the good stuff.

Kingsize is by far the Boo Radleys best album, IMO, and is so good that it's hard for me to accept that people haven't listen to it the required amount of time to see that. Buy it and don't listen to MP3s of it and keep playing it and it will reveal itself in due time. It really does seem that most hard-core fan come to that concussion or it could be me reading what I want to ultimately hear.

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 20 October 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

I played it tons, the two months between finding a promo of it and it coming out.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

(Kingsize, that is)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

not sure what that means? does it mean you don't care for it or?

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Care for it tons, probably overplayed it but that's all riiiiiight!!

Tried to tell others, they were all "Oh, I played "Giant Steps" yesterday" like they didn't need a new Boos album. (!)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm still not that convinced about Kingsize. A few great tracks but somehow it feels awkward and thrown together. It really does feel like the Boos knew they were going to split up when they recorded it.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

Kingsize was the first Boos material that I wasn't taken with at first, but repeated plays to indeed prove it to be their best work. Shame no-one was buying by that point.

Ian Edmond (ianedmond), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

No-one was buying as the promotional budget was basically scrapped!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

The promotional budget for the compilation was exceedlingly crap as well.

Got another e-mail to watch out for news on the bravecaptain site and now:

SICE - A STATEMENT

Okay, so I admit it. I'm an addict. I know that now. I've tried to stay away. God knows I've tried. I know all the reasons why I should give it up - it's bad for your health, it affects your family, it takes you away from your home.

I did quit for a while, but then The Captain called offering me a taste of the Good Life. It tasted so sweet. Felt so good. But I managed to silence the niggling little voice that whispered, "come on back, you know you want to."

Then a man from the Orient tempted me once more, and to my shame I succumbed. I was like Michael Corleone, forever trying to leave, only to be pulled back in.

I had thought I had kicked it for good.

But then, The Captain came again. Come see me, he said. And I did. I stood before him under the swirling lights, watching him weave his spell with only six strings and a sweet throat, causing smiles to grow and hearts to beat faster. I looked at the faces of those around me and I was lost.

I was back.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 21 October 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

kingsize is good. i used to not like it at all but maybe that was the "next pet sounds" hype that it didn't live up to. a few choruses are awkward and the lyrics are poor but then they always were. most of the songs could have been trimmed for length. free huey should have been on c'mon kids.

keyth (keyth), Friday, 21 October 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Hey Guys, i'm Simon the Bass player of PaperLung, make sure you all come to the first gig 10th Nov at the Bull & Gate in Kensington, it will be a great show!!

Simon Gardiner, Monday, 24 October 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Don't you mean the Bull & Gate in Kentish Town? I reckon the Bull & Gate in Kensington (if it exists) is a gastropub with four types of halloumi on the menu.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Good job you said that. Imagine if he'd gone to Kensington instead?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Hey Simon, nice band you have there. I listened to the demo's up on the bravecaptain site and I'm more than pleased. The songs remind me a lot of what Sice did in his Eggman project about 10 years ago. Those songs have wet my appetite and I can't wait until you guys are finished putting together your debut album.

I would come to the gig but I'm on the other side of the world. BTW, is it PaperLung or Paper Lung? I guess I will know soon enough and give my best to Sice and tell him that quite a few people are pleased that he has decided to come back so we can hear that beautiful voice again!

I loved this: "They would dearly love you to come and watch them wallow in their shared addiction to music..."

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 24 October 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

If the album is anything like Eggman, it is probably worth checking out. Great news!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 24 October 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Its PaperLung (in my opinion!) and their is actually one eggman song in our live set but we've given it a 'new twist' as you would expect, not sure if it will make the album if we get round to making one...

Simon Gardiner, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
So I was bouncing around the Internet tonight and found out that paperlung has a new web site: http://www.paperlung.com/

They have 3 new demo songs on preview and thought I would share this wonderful news. If you are a fan of Eggman stuff than you won’t be disappointed at all. Being a huge fan this has made my week and I uploaded one song, you can get from this website but this was the highlight, check the site out for more demos.
