#28 Sept 1997: TJR feat Xavier - "Just Gets Better"

one of my all-time faves!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Paul which site are you using?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

hi Tim! www.everyhit.com
I used to keep track of UK garage hits but by now I tend to forget a few, so I've wanted a resource thread where we can see 'em all together.

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

www.everyhit.com

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

hm - why no link? (maybe it's just disabled on my computer?)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

# 7 - B15 Project - Girls Like Us

I'm still puzzled as to why the title to this was amended. I love that this did so well because it acts like a short-circuit between garage's pop and dancehall inclinations. On this song they are the same thing. Perhaps not so surprising if it happened today though...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Paul, you need to use http:// before the address for it to linkify.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

http://www.everyhit.com

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

wo-ho thanks!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

(on semi-unrelated note: Tim have you heard "Shack It Out" by FYA? I always think of your fondness for Mis-Teeq when I hear that)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

31 - Wiley "Wot Do U Call It?" - Apr 2004

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

Everyhit is teh suck. Chartruns is the hot newness.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

2 Sweet Female Attitude Flowers Apr 2000

Munki (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

it's the best song ever.

Munki (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

major crush song! and edward - thanks for the great link

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

#1 May 1999: Shanks & Bigfoot - "Sweet Like Chocolate"

didn't like that one much

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

#20 Nov 1998: Doolally - "Straight From The Heart" (also re-released and #9 in Aug 1999)

now that's more like it!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

#2 Dec 1999: Artful Dodger feat Craig David - "Re-Rewind (Bo! Selecta)"
+and+
#2 March 2000: Artful Dodger & Romina Johnson - "Movin' Too Fast"

I gave Andy Locked On Lewis feedback to the effect that "Movin' Too Fast" would be unlikely to hit cos of the "get yer dirty hands off me" lyric, but that classic chiming melody's like Yazoo/Depeche in slo-mo or something. still not a personal fave though.

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

#1 - May 2000: Oxide & Neutrino - "Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty)"

great! and this one's brilliant too:

#7 - May 2001: Oxide & Neutrino - "Up Middle Finger"

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

#2 - August 2000: True Steppers & Dane Bowers featuring Victoria Beckham - "Out Of Your Mind"

godlike!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

#1 - August 2001: So Solid Crew - "21 Seconds"
+and+
#3 - Nov 2001: So Solid Crew - "They Don't Know"

"Oh No (Sentimental Things)" wuz robbed!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

#1 - Dec 2001 +and+ Jan 2002: Daniel Bedingfield - "Gotta Get Thru This"

biggest UK garage -related hit ever?

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

#31 - May 1997
+and+
#14 - Nov 1997:
Double 99 - "R.I.P. Groove"

golden oldie time!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

paul, Sweet Like Chocolate is fantastic!

Also 21 Seconds was always going to be bigger than Oh No.

Munki (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

#16 - Nov 1997: 187 Lockdown - "Gunman" (also #17 - July '98 re-release)
though
#9 - April 1998: 187 Lockdown - "Kung-Fu"
was the higher placing

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

#67 - Dec 1997: Gant - "Sound Bwoy Burial"/"All Night Long"

oops...! still stars to me though

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

#1 - Jan 1997: Tori Amos - "Professional Widow" probably doesn't count (for UKG), but the Armand Van Helden 'speed' mix got the clubplay

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

#11 - Oct 1996: CJ Bolland - "Sugar Is Sweeter" again Armand "sugar daddy o!"

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

#21 - March 1997: Sneaker Pimps - "Spin Spin Sugar" while we're at it

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

#1 - August 2004: 3 Of A Kind - "Baby Cakes" (our last #1 - well "Dry Your Eyes" hardly counts as!)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

I gave Andy Locked On Lewis feedback to the effect that "Movin' Too Fast" would be unlikely to hit cos of the "get yer dirty hands off me" lyric, but that classic chiming melody's like Yazoo/Depeche in slo-mo or something. still not a personal fave though.

I always thought this was weird! Why do people love a dance song about aggressive guys/being rejected (depending which side of the coin you see yrself).

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

#29 - June 2003: Dizzee Rascal - " I Luv U"
+and+
#17 - August 2003: Dizzee Rascal - "Fix Up Look Sharp"
+and+
#30 - Dec 2003: Dizzee Rascal - "Jus' A Rascal"
but... amazingly
#10 - Sept 2004: Dizzee Rascal - "Stand Up Tall"
is his biggest hit!

"I Luv U" is like a secret weapon for this decade vs others

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Davinche's "Leave Me Alone" is the "Movin Too Fast" of R&G innit.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

(I'm not listing all of them for each artist by the way - for lesser & other hits check those chart archive links)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

x-post - agreed! but so much better

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

just the mention of R&G makes me despair for the lack of vinyl (wheras all the grime you don't want can be had for ...an arm and a leg + international shipping!)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha. Paul I've maxed out my credit card so even grime rejects are off my "to buy" list!

Although I was very sad when my order for the Aftershock Mix-tape was rejected to lack of stock.

Sorry I'm derailing.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

#34 - Nov 1997: Fabulous Baker Boys - "Oh Boy"

Ramsey & Fen meet MJ Cole inna Jonny L tune! Mount Rushmore innit? swoon...

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

I always get that mixed up with Truesteppas' "Need You So '99" for obvious reasons. Which one is better? FITE!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

#38 - May 1998: MJ Cole - "Sincere" (#13 - August 2000 re-release)
almost forgot this - not nearly as high a placing as I expected
#10 - May 2000: MJ Cole - "Crazy Love"
is his highest chart placing (think that one had a good b-side on the doublepack)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Loved the Crazy Dub of "Crazy Love"! Which itself is a much much better tune than "Sincere" (unless we count the Y2K dub of the latter).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

x-post - I'm partial to the Baker Boys cos I worked a mix-pairing which is the best way out of "Just Gets Better" (but I've yet to receive tickertape parade for it)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

#8 - July 2000: Lonyo - "Summer Of Love"
only one thing to say: YAY HANDBAG!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

now what am I forgetting? oh... grime for one

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

#11 - Jan 2001: Lethal Bizzle - "Pow! (Forward)"
and of course
#8 - March 2002: Platinum 45 / More Fire Crew - "Oi!"

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

I love "Summer Of Love", it's amazing!

Munki (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

22 Kano Typical Me Mar 2005
25 Kano featuring Mike Skinner & Leo The Lion Nite Nite Sep 2005

Munki (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

whoops!
#11 - Jan 2005: Lethal Bizzle - "Pow! (Forward)" let's rewrite history

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

So many good tracks.

Straight Outta the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

So...who wants to make the CDR?

Straight Outta the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

what about that 'bodygroove' track? Architechs? Got to number 4 i think.

2steplover, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

21 Jan 1998 Somore featuring Damon Trueitt: "I Refuse (What You Want)"

I think I asked this on another thread, but does anyone know the story behind this and Industry Standard's "What You Want"? The latter appears to be a cutup of the former, but which actually came first?

Alslo, anyone feel like turning this into a(nother) YSI thread?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

xpost:
#3 - October 2000: Architechs featuring Nana - Body Groove
#20 - April 2001: Architechs - Show Me The Money

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

#13 - April 2002: Pay As U Go (Kartel) - "Champagne Dance"
with Wiley looking uncomfortable on Top Of The Pops!

#21 - May 2002: Heartless Crew - "Heartless Theme (Superglue)"
#50 - June 2003: Heartless Crew - "Why? (Looking Back)"

#12 - Feb 2001: Genius Cru - "Boom Selection"
#39 - Oct 2001: Genius Cru - "Course Bruv"

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

this thread has made me tear up a bit

this is sicilian medieval thuggery (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

#47 - Sept 2002: Tubby T - "Tales Of The Hood"

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Everybody forgot Da Click:

16/01/99 - #14 "Good rhymes"
29/05/99 - #38 "We are da click"

Pretty dreadful, really.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 20 October 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

But all else quakes before the might of:

DJ Pied Piper and the Masters of Ceremonies - "Do you really like it?"

In at #1 02/06/01

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 20 October 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

Also, I can think of a good argument that the original UK garage is none other than:

http://lisa.misto.cz/_MAIL_/gallerypix/lisastans.jpg

Peaking at #11 25/03/89 with "People hold on"

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 20 October 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

Surely "Oi!" is biggest grime hit yet?

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 20 October 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

for right or wrong, i dont really consider 'oi' to be grime, its still garage, or proto-grime to me.

anyone mentioned shanks n bigfoot in this thread yet?

Raw P at work, Thursday, 20 October 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

re: "Do You Really Like It"
so we were missing one of the UK garage #1's!

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

"Do You Really Like It?" is probably my favourite track on this thread.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

it's my least favourite by some way.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Didn't one of the Masters of Ceremony (or possibly even DJ Pied Piper himself) used to be in Hijack or Silver Bullet or some other "respected" early 90s rap act?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

amazing to think that PAUG got into the top 20
i forgot that happened

splooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

#38 - May 2004: Gemma Fox feat MC Lyte - "Girlfriend's Story"

surprised that Donna Dee didn't have a chart placing

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

#49 - Dec 1999: Y-Tribe feat Elisabeth Troy - "Enough Is Enough"

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

#34 - Dec 1997: Dreem Teem - "The Theme"

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

#22 - Aug 2000: Christian Falk feat Demetreus - "Make It Right"
cos the UKG mix is gorgeous

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

#51 - Dec 1997: Amira - "My Desire"
#46 - Aug 1998: Amira - "My Desire (1998)"
#20 - Feb 2001: Amira - "My Desire (2001)"

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

The song that refused to die.

i love it more than just about anything ever.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

I think DJ Pied Piper and the Masters of Ceremony pretty much were Hijack but w/out DJ Supreme (who used to do their music.)

The Hijack album is really good. The first track samples In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and features The Count from Sesame Street!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

i cant believe you forgot!

31 Indo R U Sleeping Apr 1998

and

12 Genius Cru Boom Selection Feb 2001
39 Genius Cru Course Bruv Oct 2001

!!!!!!

can i have a sip of that COURSE, LUV

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

haha

Jazz Funeral in the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

this tune was pretty good, no idea that it vaguely charted:

39 Angel Lee What's Your Name? Jun 2000

this is much much better than "out of yr mind"!

6 True Steppers featuring Dane Bowers Buggin' Me Apr 2000

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

NO way is that better, ambrose!

Jazz Funeral in the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

good call on Indo, ambrose - but we didn't forget Genius Cru (check upthread). and as for fave True Steppers track you're, you know I'm going to say it, "Out Of Your Mind"!

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 October 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

oops sorry.

one of my best garage memories...dancing around a deserted church in russia, with the russian garage massive (all 40 of them, all total b boys) singing/yelling along ..."boom boom boom selection"!

the buggin 10' below mix is the one that gets me. out of yr mind is the only tune where v/vm almost improved it...

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 20 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

oh - Omar (Adimora) did a mix of "Buggin'" ? have to check that then cos he's one of my absolute faves, especially for the Carol Leeming mix and his own 100% slept-on "Rush Me". strange that Tim Deluxe didn't even like 2-step... (does that mean Omar selected/mixed Locked On Vol.2 by himself? or was Tim still into it then cos of the 4/4 tracks - including their own mixes and "Obsessed")

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 October 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

i always looked out for 10' below mixes! well, twice, i think.

is this any good? "ez of freek fm"??? must be pretty early on in the game i reckon. anyone got it?

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Track 10 is massive.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 20 October 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

that was the first UK garage mix CD I bought! released 1997 and Kodwo gave it a great review in The Wire.

I thought "finally I can hear what this speed garage stuff is all about". cos (from here in the states) I'd checked some of the UK major label comps and found them to contain a few speed tracks and a whole bunch of plain ol' house. besides it was on Breakdown, Dan Donnelly's Drum & Bass Selection label!

so I tried to order it for A YEAR! finally found a copy, on a visit to UK, in a returns warehouse in Croydon... and it was a revelation! many of the tracks are classics (still haven't found "Deeper" on vinyl, though Simon has a copy!) as are EZ's selection & mix. got it in late '98, right at the time that the next wave: Dem 2, Ramsey & Fen, Groove Chronicles, KMA, et al were breaking thru so there was no question of anything other than total devotion to this music.

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

How many people on this thread still listen to this stuff regularly? I know I do.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 21 October 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

17/01/1998
Smokin' Beats Featuring Lyn Eden
Dreams
23

Quite big at the time, deep 4/4 garage - more transatlantic rather than specific UK style. Maybe a bit too smooth and 'washed out' though.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 21 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

22/11/1997
Myron
We Can Get Down
74

Liked this one a lot though - early 2-step, stripped like 'Sincere' but even more subtle, tranquil and smooth. Check that quibbly bassline.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 21 October 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

weren't deetah 'relax' a hit or did you do that already

N'n'G feat rose windross and bullfrog voiced mc?

and 'right before my eyes' or done you done that

ru sleeping?

what days what days

TruStepLova, Friday, 21 October 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

n'n'g feat rose windross 'liferide'...searched for that, dont think it charted. the mc is creed

i searched for that cos i hate it so much. n'n'g stands for energy.

mc creed.... a name that represent in totality why so solid blew everythign apart. yes i know he was the godfather etc etc wot a legend but i wasnt there then so i can raise my eyebrows at that generation iwth impunity whilst simultaneously constructing absurd "fake nostalgia" about that era.....

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 21 October 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

How many people on this thread still listen to this stuff regularly?

Course bruv!

Kurt Russell in the Chinese Quarter (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 October 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Gotta love the Daily Telegraph:

On Monday, Lady Sovereign, pin-up of the grime scene - the much-touted British offshoot of American rap - will play in London. But where?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2005/10/27/bmgrime27.xml

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

And this is just ridiculous:

Chancellor Gordon Brown is apparently a big fan of the underground garage-influenced 'grime' music of Lady Sovereign.

Mr Brown - who is likely to be Britain's Prime Minister when Tony Blair steps down before the next election - is said to have told the MC of his devotion at a recent get together to promote enterprise for young people.

Lady Sov told us: "I only spoke to him quickly, as he's a busy guy, but he commented on my music and said he's a fan.

"He said he's paying attention to what I'm up to, which is weird coming from Gordon Brown.

"He did all the talking - I could hardly get a word out! He's alright."

four months pass...
Guys you are missin a few classics. I'd be happy to hook you up.

There is a massive favour i need to ask.

What was the Female vocalist in the remix of Little Bit Of Luck by Luck & Neat. Ive been looking for it absolutly everywhere.

Please help before i go bald.

JoeBoy, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Trying to ID a hit - apparently a large crew (male/female), with a video featuring them in Victorian clothes on a carousel. Any ideas??

toby, Thursday, 29 November 2007 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

Big Brovaz! 'Favourite Things'!

hoot, Thursday, 29 November 2007 08:37 (seventeen years ago)

thanks!

toby, Thursday, 29 November 2007 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

big brov's angry tupac-meets-crunk-evanescence abortive comeback single last year is probably the funniest thing i have ever seen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GEujlbmSrY

i do not adore it quite as much as 'x' by liberty x however.

r|t|c, Thursday, 29 November 2007 13:38 (seventeen years ago)

"X-COMMUNICATED / X-TRA STIMULATING" = realest talk ever talked

coming out on Monday:
