So what do you all think? Are Michael Anothiny and Alex Van Halen a classic rhythm section, or duds?

Alex is a fantastic drummer. Michael's quite a good bass player (he plays mostly simple parts but really grooves), but I never liked the way his bass sounds on record. Which I guess is ultimately his fault.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Underrated. Considering the, er, histrionic charms of their guitarist lead singer(s), their relative humility is a small blessing.

I'd be more likely to blame Templeman and Landee. The thing Michael Anthony gets the least credit for is his backing vocals... dude sings like a little cherub.

JACK DANIELS BASS GUITAR.

Michael Anthony background vocals rule. Chuck Klosterman gave them a lot of love in Fargo Rock City and I was grateful.

His backing vocals are grebt. And while the producers are the ones who first made his bass sound like that, ultimately the record says "Van Halen" and "Michael Anthony - Bass." The producers work for him.

As for Alex, I forgot to mention my favorite thing about him - he's the only hard-rock drummer I know of (and very few in any genre) who says his favorite drummer is Ringo Starr. Which you can totally hear. The fact that he never (in the DLR era, anyway) succumbed to the big '80s drum sound is awesome.

I think the Roth VH records all sound quite fab, bass and all. The early VH records are pretty much tracked live. Ted Templeman made good sounding records, just check out the Beefheart album he did or the Dooby Brothers.

Eddie's guitar is so all over the place I think it would have fallen apart if Michael Anthony got really wild on bass or they would have ended up sounding like some mad late 70s metal version of The Minutemen.

Alex Van Halen used an odd high tuning sound on his toms, they seem to have this really long "blong" sound instead of the usual "thud".

I don't know if either MA or AVH would have had a job in rock if they did not play in Van Halen, but they made it work in that band.

been listening to VH1 lately- definitely a good rock rhythm section, but i really agree eith the proposition that the group's secret weapon is michael anthony's vocals

I'm not sure how classic they are, talent-wise, but I sure can't imagine those first several albums without them.

My favorite part of any Van Halen entry on a "Best ____ of All Time" list:

"Featuring the mesmerizing antics of wild frontman David Lee Roth, the stunning, innovative fretwork of guitarist Eddie Van Halen, the manic energy of drummer Alex Van Halen, and the steady work of bass player Michael Anthony..."

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

They are a great rhythm section...Anthony does just what the songs call for, which is great bass playing.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

I agree with what people are saying about Michael Anthony being the minimalist foil to Eddie, though more than the way the bass sounds it's the way the bass is generally mixed really low that annoys me. As far as Alex, he and Mike play well together, but I can't really get with his sound on 5150 where he used like 100 mics on the drums. All and all, the perfect rhythm section for that band!

Ha! Spot on! Actually, change the names and that could be the opening clause to the description of about a hundred bands.

AVH is great. I think a lot of drummers say that about Ringo, though. Some of them are dorks, like Greg Bissonette, and some of them are cool like Bill Rieflin.

What about that Electro Harmonix synth bass action on "Sunday Afternoon In The Park" and "One Foot Out The Door" that ends Fair Warning? Is Anthony doing that, or Eddie VH? Whoever it is, it sounds fucking brilliant. The band invented Trans Am in the space of less than four minutes, and those four minutes still outdo anything Trans Am have ever done.

Yes, that's true -- "Sunday Afternoon in the Park" has been a DJ set staple in Greenpoint for five years. That's all Eddie. I know he must have 12 more hours of that stuff locked up in a vault somewhere, and it keeps me up at nights.

Point me in the direction of such a band immediately! (And please don't say Living Colour.)

And I second the Ted Templeman nod - he & Landee made some of my favourite sounding records of all time.

Van Halen is one of my favorite rock bands of all time. Hearing them one the radio was one thing, but when I saw them on a video clip on Don Kirshener's Rock Concert doing "Bottoms Up" live I knew I wanted to play drums then. Then in 1982 I saw them again on a video clip on DKRC doing "So This Is Love" and "Unchained" and saw this GIGANTIC black and white drumset and I knew for sure that I wanted to get into music some kinda way. Michael Anthony's bass sound is a deep sound that I always liked from listen to r&b alot and is the reason why I liked the bass as well. His sound is as out front as John Entwhistle's sound(though more trebly). While not the Sly and Robbie of rock they play well together and contribute to their sound of Van Halen real good.I love those boys!

And they all got paid by Warner Brothers, and it is them who ultimately makes the decisions.

I love that I can read this and think with at least 75% certainty that I have the song right ("Runnin' With The Devil"?)...anyway, everybody upthread pretty much nailed this one correctly - the rhythm section in this band NEEDED to play it safe and let their two wild men do their thing. In fact, it's the Van Halen songs that feature them the least (like, um...well, "Eruption" I guess) that bore me the most. Gotta lock into some kind of groove before I'll give a shit.

And yes, the backing vocals...wow. "Dance The Night" away is nothing without them.

I'm stuck trying to think of another good band that uses this type of lineup - shredder and hoss on guitar and vox, most conservative bar band ever on bass and drums. For a second I thought the Smiths, but the bass parts on a lot of those songs are actually pretty wild. The Pixies, maybe? They're really too downtempo to really compare in terms of guitar antics, and Frank Black, while distinctive, doesn't really punch through the mix...but you do get the analogous "bassist's backing vocals as secret ingredient" factor. Um...

Search YouTube for live late-'70s/early-'80s Van Halen. The entire '83 Us Festival performance was also online somewhere; don't know if it still is. These clips opened my eyes - on stage anyway, MH did NOT play it safe. He's jumped about 30 spots on my Favorite Bass Player list.

that's cuz he's using rototoms. apparently tom miking was always an issue for vh; on 5150 it's all electronic toms.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Thursday, 25 May 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

At this US Festival show he has gobs of toms and one electronic tom. He uses the electronic one 90% of the time.
