OMG IT'S THE ALL-TIME JAZZ RECORDS POLL (finally)

It took awhile, but finally here it is. ILM's all-time favorite jazz records poll. excitement, fun, etc.

There is no nominations list, because quite honestly it would be about 10,000 records long and that's just silly. So this is wide open. Vote for what you want, 100 albums maximum, 20 albums minimum.

(There was a recent 1990s jazz poll, but albums from the '90s will of course be included!)

The rules are as follows, as adapted from a work by former Mets outfielder Darryl Strawberry:

INSTRUCTIONS

1. You must vote for at least 20 albums. You may vote for up to 100 albums.

2. Mark your ballot clearly. To make it easier on me, please submit them as follows:

John Coltrane - "I Love Lifesavers" (300)
Sonny Sharrock - "Enough Already" (100)
Kenny G - "G-Force" (99)
etc.

This way I can organize them alphabetically when I put them into a larger document, and then work from there. The numbers after the names are the point totals, which are as follows:

1st Place - 300 pts.
2nd Place - 100 pts.
3rd Place - 99 pts.
4th Place - 98 pts.
...
100th Place - 2 pts.

3. In the e-mail with your ballot, right after or right before your ballot (but NOT in the midst of it) by all means feel free to include some remarks. Boring mojo canon style remarks are expected and welcomed I guess if you're really good at pulling off that sort of thing BUT what I'd really like is personal memories of the tracks ie. what it was like when it first dropped, when you first heard it, etc. I'm aiming more for oral history than yet more list type crit with the remarks.

4. E-mail Ballots to: ilxjazzpoll@gmail.com . Deadline: NOVEMBER 23rd (which is my birthday, it seems like a good day to end this process).

alright, everyone, get going on those lists.

also, send your ballot within the body of the email, NOT as an attachment.

can't we vote for some grime records instead?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

hey gear are you my brother tim? because you both like music, plus you both have the same birthday. oh wait, I forgot, he's in portland and is a workaholic hospital administrator instead of being an l.a. television dude. plus, the last time someone had sex on his couch Bill Clinton was still president. anyway, good job on the jazz poll and I'm voting like a bastard on this.

So we're not doing nominations?

ILX All-Time Greatest Jazz Albums Poll - Nominations Thread

Maybe we should at least tease out favorites among artists who will score low due to votes spread out across massive careers and multiple collections. For Louis Armstrong, for instance, should we agree on "The Best of Louis Armstrong: The Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings"?

bump

I was hesitant to allow noms with so many records, but I think the huge amount of records will make for some interesting results. I might go as far as a Top 150, depending on the results.

Wow. OPTION OVERLOAD.

Instead of making myself dizzy thinking about TEH CANON, I think I'm going to have to vote from the gut and just pick albums I actively enjoy listening to, the stuff I've kept reaching for over time.

bump. the thrill is gone with voting in these things, i sense.

I would be more pumped if you ditched the 300/100 thing

Keith C (lync0), Friday, 21 October 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

whatever, fuck this.

Oh come on now

Keith C (lync0), Friday, 21 October 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

i just figure i'll be putting in a decent amount of work on this and i don't want to deal with nitpicking about point systems.

gear (gear), Friday, 21 October 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough, just wanted to make sure when you copied the rules over from the other poll it was something you took into account, since a lot of people complained on that one about it and it's not a typical scoring system. But the rules is the rules and I'm fine with it.

And if you want help compiling the results just let me know, I got mad Excel skillz.

Keith C (lync0), Friday, 21 October 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I will keep you posted!

i figure the points will give a little more weight to jazz records that no one has ever heard of that are marked #1 on individual ballots. which would be a good thing, I think.

Yeah it either is going to cause "Kind of Blue" to win by a zillion points or some Archie Shepp record that like three people voted for. Which are both fine outcomes.
