Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. "Calypso breakdown". First club song I ever listened to. (heh heh)

Tony Wild's Wildsscene.com has a certain amount of info (here), and gives marks out of 10 to long lists of records, although i imagine CD-wise you're looking at compilations

fascinating fact: the Charmer was pre-Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan

I don't really know anything about calypso, but about five years ago I impulse-purchased Vol. 1 of a Mighty Sparrow best-of series put out by a label called, I believe, ICE. It was so amazing that I immediately sprang for the other three volumes. I gather it's all stuff from the '60s and '70s; most of it is great, but some of it is just amazing--funny and catchy and clever and bawdy and political and surreal and totally entertaining. And Sparrow is a helluva singer too. I've sampled other calypso comps and single-artist albums since, but I've never found anything else in the genre that stands up to this stuff. But, again, I'm no expert.

I think you'd like the traditional calypsonians of the mid-'30's - '40's like Lord Kitchener, King Radio, Atilla the Hun, Black Stalin and Lord Executioner. Rounder Records put out a few good comps not long ago. Really interesting history to that period of calypso too. It was proto-hiphop in a way, with lots of battling and political commentary.

fritz, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to mention all the great MC handles. Then there was Robert Mitchum, but anyway.

Piggy, The Calypso Orchestra of the Maritimes, tying in the similarities between Calypso and Disco like Cub tied forever indie to people who actually can't play their intsruments. Piggy can be found from the lovely folks who run no Distribution, and its a really dumm but fun cd.

i listen to a lot of calypso from the 1930s and 1940s. also saw some len lye films recently with brilliant calypso songs as accompaniment--various offshots of the lionel belasco group.

early calypso has an interesting (subversive?) mixture of slang/patois and selfconsciously correct and verbose language. the very rhythms of the music seem to enforce this mixture.

the rounder belasco cd is remarkable. i wish the other bandleaders who were making similar music at the time were better represented on cd.

maya angelou made a calypso record once upon a time. it isn't very good.

I thought this was a thread about Jacques Cousteau.

Harry Belafonte: C or D?

Anyone remember their parents or grandparents singing "Brownskin Gals"?

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Harry Belafonte is not well. He pulled out at the last minute of a big tour with Nana Mouskouri.
I still went.

Amateurist, I've been looking for some good representative '30s-'40s calypso. Any other CDs you might reccomend?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, "calypso calaloo" and "fall of man" on rounder to start with.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been totally loving fall of man lately. also this mighty sparrow/lord kitchener "16 festival hits" cd. also belafonte at carnegie. i just love calypso so much right now! tomorrow i'm going to buy another calypso album to reward myself for not smoking this week. which one shall it be? mighty sparrow greatest hits 1? roosevelt in trinidad (this one looks so good!)? calypso calaloo?

well, whichever one they have, i guess! but suggestions welcome

i was thinking of london is the place for me--my friend (different friend) loves it. he has it on vinyl so i can't copy it from him though.

i think anything above will make me happy though.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 9 April 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

i could copy it for you, although the liner notes/packaging are pretty worth having.

"Falma" by Square One (?) is the best Calypso song ever.

Faluma ding ding ding... *jizzes*. Oh man, what a song.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

is there a big difference between Calypso and Soca?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

that Faluma song sure aint calypso but it may well be soca! (which i dunno anything about).

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Soca as in soul plus calypso, is more rhythmic and faster-tempoed. These days soca can resemble dancehall at times and incorporate hiphop as well. Calypso purists snear that soca only contains "let's party" lyrics, while calypso tells stories and is topical or politcial and stuff.

i bought london is the place for me!! reports forthcoming. still can't find roosevelt in trinidad though.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

i almost bought the lord invader disc stormy mentioned. actually i couldn't remember if it was the one he said kicked behind or some other one. but looking upthread, it was indeed the one sitting on the shelf at soundscapes.

and i did not buy it.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

i like "birth of ghana"!

three years pass...

I just got Roosevelt in Trinidad. Pretty amazing. Lion's "Bing Crosby" is so fucking great. Maybe my favourite closing lines of a song ever: "He has a queer eccentricity/of removing his hat very infrequently/so let us unanimousily shout three cheers for this golden-voiced prodigy!"

fritz, Thursday, 1 May 2008 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

That reminds me...DC Caribbean Carnival coming up in late June...There's usually always a retro calypso show associated...

s1ocki, Thursday, 1 May 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

oh i just said that.

man the london is the place comps are so good... not all calypso, sure, but all awes.

s1ocki, Thursday, 1 May 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

email me slocki, i can burn you a pile of stuff... but it's worth scoring the cd of Roosevelt if you can find it, amazingly detailed liner notes and annotated lyrics explaining all the references.

the Lord Invader Calypso in New York disc that Smithsonian reissued last year (think it was last hear) kicks a whole bunch of behind.

My favorite thing in this set is the song "New York Subway," in which Lord Invader goes to Brooklyn on a date, wakes up lost, and gets bullshit excuses from cab drivers about why they can't take him back uptown. It's reassuring to know that there are constants and continuity in the world.

Other calypso songs I'm personally fond of lately: "My Wife's Nightie," in which Lord Kitchener brings home a young lady who seems "of good character" while his wife is away, but wakes up to find she's stolen his wife's nice nightie; and "Mahalia, I Want My Dollar Back," by Lord Invader, which is pretty self-explanatory. I think I go for the funny/petty complaint songs, really.

nabisco, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

my wife's nightie is great. great punchline.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

Something about a chorus singing "Come back with my wife's nightie!" in between threats of criminal action ...

Do you guys have any other recommendations? I've been listening to calypso while working on a big writing project, just to keep a steady mood/tone to the writing -- I could use more. (My only needs are that it not be too roughly recorded or too modern/insistent, both of which can jar my concentration -- the sound and recording of that prime-era stuff is really good for comfortable all-day listening.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

(Also, has anyone listened much to the WFMU calypso/soca show "Muriel's Treasure?" Trying to decide whether it's worth dipping in and going through some of the archived ones.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

Not to turn this into my calypso liveblog, or anything, but oh, Lord Melody-paws! His complaint about New York is that

In the winter when snow starts to fall
There is nothing to attract you at all
Even the women lose their sex appeal
Because they're covered from their head to their heel

But then he proceeds to visit and sing the praises of Chicago!

Search Lord Beginner's "Victory Test Match"!

roxymuzak, Thursday, 26 June 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

^^ I would like sports so much better if all results came in the form of 3-minute calypso summaries (see also "Cricket Champions")

Yes!!!

roxymuzak, Thursday, 26 June 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

Right, so I have now officially heard a song about a seagull with its head stuck up a mule's ass

Dammit, took out Van Dyke Parks' Discover America a few nights ago, put "Jack Palance" on repeat for a while, and haven't stopped listening to Mighty Sparrow/Calypso comps since. Calypso Pioneers: 1912-1937, Calypso Carnival: 1936-1941, and the Mighty Sparrow Explodes into Calypso comps, all fantastic.
