I wish I could think of any.. Give me a few minutes.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

my theory 1992 = the worst year for albums of the past 3 decades [80s, 90s, 00s] in terms of quantity of quality, diversity and innovation.

evidence:

1992 being the first year i lived in a town with more than 8,000 and a record store, it will remain forever a fantastic year for music for me...
and looking at thatrateyourmusic top100 lists, there are at least 10 albums I LOVE...

Steven Jesse Bernstein - Prison
Deicide - Legion
Tom Waits - Bone Machine

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

now:

Stereolab - Peng!
PJ Harvey - Dry
Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

At the time:
1. Automatic For The People
2. Back In Denim
3. Ingenue

The rest of my top ten for that year consisted of Erotica, Dry, Play With Toys, Psalm 69, Harvest Moon and Bone Machine, and I see no reason to change it.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

Ice Cube - The Predator
Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists
dc Basehead - Play With Toys

Kitchens of Distinction: The Death of Cool
Kitchens of Distinction: The Death of Cool
Kitchens of Distinction: The Death of Cool

-- Jimmy James Inc. (thewestexi...), November 2nd, 2005.

That would have been Laura's favourite. That and Peng! by Stereolab and Eva Luna by Moonshake.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

At the time:

1. Automatic For The People - REM
2. Ingenue - k.d. lang
3. Copper Blue - Sugar

Followed by Lyle Lovett, Jesus & Mary Chain, Stereo MC's, Lil Louis & The World, Deee-Lite, Leonard Cohen and Arrested Development.

However, the album I enjoyed most in 1992 was Ultramarine's Every Man And Woman Is A Star, released in 1991.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

...but the most mystifying omission has to be Harvest Moon, which I still play regularly to this day. Where did it go?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: Moonshake! I saw them supporting the Throwing Muses, or maybe it was PJ Harvey, or Sugar...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

prodigy - experience
altern 8 - full on mask hysteria
shut up & dance - death is not the end

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

Altern 8 was at 12 in my list (11 was Check Your Head). Prodigy would have been top three if they'd included the single versions of the singles. SUAD and Nicolette's Now Is Early also in the 11-20 section of my list.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

I rather suspect I made the Disposable Heroes of wotsit my #1 LP back then. SUAD would have been in top 10, but perhaps not top 3.

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

Can anyone admit to listening to the Disposable Heroes album after 1992?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

No, but Spearhead's Home was my #16 in 1994, and can anyone admit to listening to that after, ooh, 1995?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Madonna, Erotica
Madonna, Erotica
Madonna, Erotica

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

I think I'm going to have to go with:

REM - Automatic...
Sonic Youth - Dirty
Ween - Pure Guava

I feel kind of weird for not picking Slanted & Enchanted, but it's definitely my least favorite Pavement album, and I honestly don't think I like it as much as the three albums I listed. It definitely says something about '92, though, that a Ween album made it into my top three.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

It definitely says something about '92, though, that a Ween album made it into my top three.

Is it your fault that every song on Pure Guava is amazing? I think not. You made the right decision.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

I finally picked up Slow Century a couple of days ago and have been listening and relistening to Slanted and Enchanted.
That would be pick #1.
Basehead would definitely be in the top three. I still listen to that album.
The final pick is a lot tougher, but I think Copper Blue might just sneak in.
Kind of boring choices really.

Binjominia (Brilhante), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

SUAD came out in 92, yes ! As well as J. Mills' "Waveform Transmission vol.1".

blunt (blunt), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

I can't pick 3. I thought 1992 was a really good year for music.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

1. Lindsey Buckingham, "Out Of The Cradle"
2. Sugar, "Copper Blue"
3. Gin Blossoms, "New Miserable Experience"

John Fredland (jfredland), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

Slanted & Enchanted
Cooper Blue
Check Your Head

darin (darin), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

But at the time Alice In Chains and Sugar were defintely my top 2. I couldnt choose between Pavement and Spiritualized for no 3.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

Shit, I need to put the Arrested Development in my top three. And Gin Blossoms was '92? I thought it came later -- but yeah, those two in, Chuck & Eddy and Stigers out.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 3 November 2005 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

I actually remember very clearly my favorites from that year:

1. Ride - Going Blank Again
2. Belly - Star
3. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
4. Sugar - Copper Blue
5. Buffalo Tom - Let Me Come Over

Lemonheads' It's A Shame About Ray got a lot of play, too. But Ride and Buffalo Tom are the only ones I ever want to listen to anymore. (And Spiritualized, although I didn't catch on to them until later, after I saw them live on 120 minutes one night - a great example of being immediately grabbed by a song. Just wandered onto the channel randomly and found myself immediately transfixed and HAD to know what it was.)
