Taking Sides: Amon Duul v. Amon Duul II

They just seem to be coming up a lot lately, you know? For me, they are one of the final frontiers of the 70s German rock scene. I don't know much about them.

More than just which of the two band you prefer, I'm wondering about favorite releases & what you think of these bands in general.

Like Dominique, I heard about Amon Duul through comparisons w/ the Boredoms. I bought Psychedelic Underground b/c I heard it cultivated a similar tribal/trance rock vibe, and I can hear some similarities. I like parts of that record a lot, more than the only ADII record I have Wolf City. Although I just picked that up recently & I’m still digesting it.

doesn't "Amon Duul" usually refer to Amon Duul II, given that they are the more commercial of the two, with the other one being called Amon Duul I?

I really love the idea of two bands picking the name Amon Duul simoultanaeously.

DV, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have "Yeti" by Amon Duul II. Terrible prog-krautrock. The singing is quite bad but I think it was even much worse with Amon Duul as they were not really musicians and their recordings are mainly from long improvised jam sessions.

Amon Düül was originally the name of a great big German hippie collective that made music on the side. Right before what was to have been (I believe) their first performance, they split into two groups (that occasionally lent members to each other). Amon Düül (which didn't use a I at the end of its name--there was a semi-related band in the '70s that called itself Amon Düül I, but you can safely avoid them) was the more art brut of the two; somebody edited four or five albums' worth of "material" (try the first, _Psychedelic Underground_, if you're curious) out of a single 36-hour-long stoned jam. They did actually get it together to go into a studio and record for real at one point, and the result was a rather lovely album, _Paradieswarts Düül_.

Amon Düül II is where the more, uh, conventionally skilled musicians went--much more a band than a commune. _Yeti_ is the acknowledged really good one; there was a decent greatest-hits on Cleopatra a couple of years ago. My favorite song by a wide margin is "Archangels Thunderbird," which sounds like it was made by Led Zep's crystal-meth- huffing cousin.

Three bands here guys:

  • Amon Duul I - initial band that did the aforementioned massive jam sessions culled into three LPs
  • Amon Duul II - the more famous splinter group that is most commonly referred to
  • Amon Duul (aka Amon Duul III or Amon Duul UK and even sometimes Amon Duul II) - probably the least liked of the three incarnations. 4 records and a compilation featuring Dave Anderson and Robert Calvert (Hawkwind). Barbara Manning used to cover one this incarnation's songs quite a few years ago.

Hope I'm doing this link properly, but here's Lester Bangs on the Duul (if you're a fan, are you offically a Duulard?).

Okay, that was just weird. Cut and paste this instead:

I have records by both, but I listen to ADII's "Yeti" and "Tanz Der Lemminge" far more than any of the rest... So Amon Duul II gets my vote. Only if they kept up with this caliber of quality after 1973. (OK OK "Wolf City" isn't bad.. but still, after "..Lemminge"? Come on!)

Terrible Prog-rock, Alex? You hurt me. You hurt me in my heart.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thee only amon duul 1 I had was "disaster" which was bloody awful, & sounded like a bad hippie jam session recorded on a cheap cassette player someone has hidden under the drumkit. "Paradieswarts duul" sounds like it might have been quite nice, I keep looking out 4 a copy, but haven't spotted one yet. Duul 2 OTOH made "Yeti", Dance of the Lemmings " & Wolf City" which are all awesome headfux0r musick. A pretty easy win really. Alex' comment above??? EH?????

I've never heard the first AD, but was a big fan of AD II in high school. Their first LP, Phallus Dei is my favorite. I would say it relates to their later work the way Monster Movie relates to later Can - more primitive and scary sounding (in a good way). I also have a soft spot for Vive La Trance, which is their first steps toward a pop consciousness. The last one I bought was Made In Germany, which was finally too pop for my tastes (I was still deep into pretentious prog then), but even this one has its moments.

nickn, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Psychedelic Underground is AACEE ACE ACE oh yes. Phallus DEI is so stupid I LOVE IT. i have been desperately trying to get a hold of "yeti" for ages now with no luck. "paradiesarts duul" however which seems to be highly "rated" is a pile of dull stoned hippie singalong shite along the lines of "i'd like to buy the world a coke" or some such. More musically incapable germans NOW! arse to CAN and their shitey staus quo alikism pooo pooo to faust and their hairy rubbish

I think both groups are good for different reasons, although I prefer Amon Duul II. Amon Duul are great in a crusty primitivist outsider art kinda way: bad playing, bad recording, but more than compensated for in enthusiasm and stoned delirium. Amon Duul II on the other hand, take all the best elements of prog/psych, trim away the fat, dowse it equal parts acid and speed, and...LIFT OFF! The first time I listened to Phallus Dei, I immediately began to feel a lysergic rush up the back of my neck (and I haven't dropped acid in years)and sat with my jaw clattering against my ankles for the albums duration. Yeti takes it even further out, and Tanz Der Lemminge has the economical guitar/percussion interplay and forward-moving (but nver indulgent) jamming that I spent years looking for in other music. Haven't heard any of the later stuff yet, but from what I can tell, the only people who seem to prefer it to the first three albums are Yes/ELP fans, so I'm sorta apprehensive. The first three are absolutely essential, though.

I'm jamming Wolf City right now and I'll be damned if "Green Bubble Raincoated Man" isn't a great song!

I like Düül 1 more these days. Disaster and Psychedelic Underground are excellent, Paradieswarts is good if only for "Love is Peace." Collapsing is kind of weak imo. I have yet to hear all of Experimente, but of what I have heard it's decent if not just more of the same.

Man I am really bouncing weirdly through the Amon Duul II catalog lately. Always meant to check this band out, but they don't exactly have the easiest albums to come across when you aren't specifically dedicated to finding them. Anyway, I found Phallus Dei and Made in Germany reissues at a local store earlier this summer and started my exploration of their catalog. Listened to Germany first, which was weird, since it was pretty far off from what I'd read about the band. Some fantastic moments though. Phallus Dei blew my mind and made me really eager to hunt out more. The logical place to head next, from what I've gathered, would've been to more of those early discs. Instead I happened across Only Human and Pyragony X next, so I've been listening to the latter "pop" stuff lately. Which is fine, I actually dig a lot of those two albums (really loving the twisted disco on "Spaniards & Spacemen" as I type this). Anyway, I finally took the plunge tonight and celebrated my new job by ordering Yeti, Wolf City, and Tanz Der Lemminge from aQ just now. Cannot wait to dig through these seemingly essential albums.

Have fun, they are a great band. Vive Le Trance is cool, too.

Trip Maker, Friday, 17 September 2010 03:31 (fifteen years ago)

Was always told not to stray too far away from the 1st 3 records by ADII too. Should probably get _Wolf City_ at some point though, & maybe _Live In London_.

Wandering Boy Poet, Friday, 17 September 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

"Wolf City" is considered their best record by lots of their fans!

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 17 September 2010 12:11 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, "Made In Germany" is an odd place to start, but I'm the odd person who claims that as their most-played ADII album.

Overblown 80's Gated Snore (Dan Peterson), Friday, 17 September 2010 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

Listening to Only Human again right now, and it feels like the back-to-back "Spaniards & Spacemen" and "Kismet" is enough to prove that there are brilliant moments to be found deeper into their career.

Pretty much everything through Wolf City is essential. I'm still exploring the later stuff... slowly.....

Really like Disaster from AD I (outtakes and jams, I know) but Phallus Dei, Yeti, Tanz der Lemminge, and Wolf City are all super so I gotta go with AD II.

chromecassettes, Saturday, 18 September 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

The later albums are dominated by the new guys, Zauner & Ebert, which is a bit disappointing because they seem to want to turn the band into, i don't know, Wings or Pilot or 10cc... yet the good tracks on those albums are actually really good! Not enough of them though.

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Saturday, 18 September 2010 09:41 (fifteen years ago)

And after those, Paradieswärts Düül is a good gateway into AD1

Well spotted me, 'cos I've just discovered that "Almost Alive" was mixed at 10cc's Strawberry Studios!

He wasn't much good at singing in tune, but there's something about his tone, this abrasion in his throat, that spills scorn over something like "Syntelman's March of the Roaring Seventies".

John Weinzierl, Peter Leopold, Lothar Meid and now Chris Karrer are all dead :(

By the way, stumbled across this rare interview with Ulrich Leopold of Amon Düül.

I don't see anything online saying that John Weinzierl died.

Well, that's some good news then!

Apparently COVID did for Chris Karrer.

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 January 2024 15:44 (one year ago)

RIP. He wrote and sang “Mr. Kraut’s Jinx,” my (and probably no one else’s) alltime favorite Amon Duul track.

Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable POST (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 3 January 2024 19:28 (one year ago)

I haven't heard Made in Germany, but that song is the top of the list today in the iTunes Store when searching the band name.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 4 January 2024 17:20 (one year ago)

Metropolis is on that album. One of my fave songs by them.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 4 January 2024 23:02 (one year ago)

Lot of good stuff on that album.

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Thursday, 4 January 2024 23:10 (one year ago)

... also a lot of not so good stuff too tbh

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Thursday, 4 January 2024 23:11 (one year ago)

Yeah, that one has some really high highs and some really low lows.

Finally picked up a CD copy of Live in London last week, really the other big hole in my collection I've wanted to fill. Have everything up through Vortex, except Almost Alive, but I haven't really tried hard to find that one given its rep.

What else in their catalogue sounds like "I Want the Sun to Shine," one of the bonus tracks on Phallus Dei? Internet claims it was eighties or nineties, or from a live video from 1968, which seems unlikely.

with hidden noise, Saturday, 29 March 2025 09:21 (nine months ago)

It is suggested here and here that that track, with others, was recorded circa 2006, for release as bonus tracks on reissues. Also:

My advice on figuring out AD II bonus tracks is to just give up.

Kim Kimberly, Saturday, 29 March 2025 14:46 (nine months ago)

"I Want the Sun to Shine" is very cool. Never heard that before as I have an earlier reissue with different but similarly confusing bonus tracks.

Kim Kimberly, Saturday, 29 March 2025 14:52 (nine months ago)

thanks!
