They've been described as the super-producers of drum'n'bass and their new album "Hold Your Colour", featuring a plethora of famous names, has recently been given an official release. Also - that Prodge remix.

What do y'all think?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

Student favourites. Like Mr Scruff.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 3 November 2005 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yeh, they're pretty harmless - but you've gotta admit it's good fun. Dare I say, the new Prodigy?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

Nowhere NEAR the cultural impact. Nowhere near. No one outside of university campuses and sixth form colleges knows who they are or cares.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 3 November 2005 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

yeh, it was only till i hosted a party the other night and some kid put it on that i heard about them. a lot of it was quite familiar. i guess i like their sound - it's very polished, but unabashed dance music.

so why are they big at uni and nowhere else? have they been doing the circuits?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 09:44 (nineteen years ago)

i liked Masochist and The Vault last year and a lot of it has the same kind of style (Slam, Tarantula, Terminal, Another Planet) which, yes, does sound familiar (like mampi swift?). a lot of the rest of it's too smooth for me. (have been listening to a lot of very dark and nasty dnb comps this year - Destruction Ritual, Future Beats 1-3, Black Out, Us Against The World etc and wonder why it seems to have taken this turn recently...)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 3 November 2005 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

Blackeyed Peas of Drum n Bass.

tektronica, Thursday, 3 November 2005 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahaha! OTM!

Still, it's harmless fun, it's catchy - I don't see the problem with it.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

dreadful

Barnaby (Barnaby), Thursday, 3 November 2005 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

why?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

"still grey" is the only good tune

bubo, Thursday, 3 November 2005 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

so shrill. the way some people think its so mind blowing -when all i can hear is lame big room dnb with nu-metal sensibilities- is especially irritating. cf. sara cox on radio1

Barnaby (Barnaby), Thursday, 3 November 2005 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

pendulum = Mary Ann Hobbs faves

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 November 2005 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

eek! luckily i don't listen to radio 1 too much. don't know about the nu-metal thing though.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

so the verdict is - it sounds okay but they're really uncool because students and mary ann hobbes like em.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

how does Nick know about Uni Kids music tastes, Does he flirt with 18 / 19 / 20 / 21 year old gurls all day by commenting I bet you look good on the dancefloor ;-)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

pendulum are awesome, but they are no fresh

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

You know where I work, DJ Martian?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

yes

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

pendulum are awesome, but they are no fresh

I'd say that's where I stand. That said I'm a bit sick of all this feeble d'n'b that's been coming out for a long time and I just want something to bounce around to with cheeky basslines and they provide that very well.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

i think there's a lot less space between something like, say, sileni and dj fresh than a lot of people are willing to accept. (as that mike paradinas mix kind of proved.)

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

what mix is that strongo?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

the 'Watermelon Thievery' by Paradinas:
1 fracture/neptune-colemanism (outsider)
2 equinox-acid rain (breakage 47th century remix) (inperspective)
3 breakage-so vain (bassbin)
4 southstar/miracle-omega amen (intasounds)
5 bizzy b-afraid of the dark (planet µ)
6 breakage-bring back (bassbin)
7 bizzy b-darkside (planet µ)
8 capone-neck back (test)
9 manix-hardcore junglism (total science rmx) (reinforced)
10 potential bad boy-girls town (three lions)
11 shy fx-power of ra (ebony)
12 fresh bc-sausage dog (charge)
13 rudeboylicious-murdera (rudeboylicious)
14 mason-ruff, rugged & raw (freak)
15 fresh-dead man walking (valve)
16 fresh-da licks (breakbeat kaos)
17 pendulum-another planet (breakbeat kaos)
18 rob the builder-can you fix it? (up yours)
19 sileni-twitchy droid leg (offshore)
20 bad company-grunge3 (dieselboy,kaos & karl K remix) (human)
21 fresh-tomb raider (dogs on acid)
22 midiman-drop the bass (signal)
23 dillinja-twist em out (fresh remix) (trouble on vinyl)

really good, if you can find it on slsk

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

I've never quite understand why the barrier between Techno/House and Drum'n'Bass seems so totally rigid and uncrossable.

login name (fandango), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

tempo, i guess. i think we've talked about this before. obviously in terms of the actual sounds they use there's often no difference at all.

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

Photek tried

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

Teebee also

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 3 November 2005 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yeh, I've found mixing d'n'b into techno/house/trance/whatever a fairly simple affair. I think it's been the case for a long time that when people go out to see a dj they ask "so what music is it?" and they expect an answer like "deep hard trance" and if the dj plays any non-deep-hard trance they get annoyed. Dunno about you, but whatever happened to the early 90s "it's all dance music, innit?" ethos?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 3 November 2005 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

Photek, Teebee and, how 'bout Zinc's try at crossover, "Faster"?? derd.

tektronica, Friday, 4 November 2005 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

Heheh,I am so behind the curve that I am still a sucker for this album. And Blood Sugar was great. Also I like Mr Scruff.

Fat Penne (Ned Trifle II), Monday, 10 November 2008 10:10 (sixteen years ago)

I saw them on Jools on Friday.

When exactly did they turn into the Alarm?

A suit to remember at Montague Moss (Marcello Carlin), Monday, 10 November 2008 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

I liked that as well (the Pendulum track, not The Alarm, although I'm sure I have a couple of their tracks squirreled away somewhere).
And tomorrow I will be reviewing a Muse album from a couple of years ago.

Fat Penne (Ned Trifle II), Monday, 10 November 2008 11:42 (sixteen years ago)

Their remix of Voodoo People is fatness. Most other stuff ranges from meh to outright crap.

one month passes...

last year i heard 15 minutes of the first pendulum album and couldn't take it anymore, so why is it am i enjoying the Qemists album so much?
same style .. but just without all the pseudo-new-age-ufo crap ..
mike patton and wiley approve of qemists so i guess that's got to count for something.
I would do a "Qemists vs Pendulum" thread, but suspect no-one would care, and in a few days/weeks/months its very likely neither will i.
but for this week, Qemists are the in yer face album of the moment.

one year passes...

So a ton of UK types from here have been complaining about them on Twitter. Or sorta not, depending, thus our own Dorian Lynskey:

Wasn't there another drum & bass act called Pendulum in the 90s? I remember liking some of their songs, they had an album with a duck on the cover. I guess they have nothing to do with this Pendulum?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 08:56 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, different Pendulum.

Most women do not like atheism.(8)(9)(10) (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 08:59 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, this the Pendulum I was thinking of:

http://www.discogs.com/Pendulum-Creature-Feature/master/160033

IIRC correctly they were Australian too? And apparently there was also a third Australian electronic act called Pendulum back in the 1990s. Kinda confusing.

no, it's all on laptops now

the hat's filthy lesson (sic), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

Looking at that photo, Pendulum has six members?! How can an electronic music act have so many members? What do they all do?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 07:12 (thirteen years ago)

Chop out lines for each other.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 07:38 (thirteen years ago)

How can an electronic music act have so many members? What do they all do?

Drums, guitar, bass & b. vox, DJ and two singers, one of whom also plays keys and produces.

the hat's filthy lesson (sic), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 07:42 (thirteen years ago)

Ah okay, so they're like rock band after all? I've only heard a few mid-00s tracks by them that were instrumental d&b, so I wondered how it took 6 people to produce them.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 08:29 (thirteen years ago)

Even The Prodigy had room for only 3 extra people besides the producer.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 08:32 (thirteen years ago)

Ah okay, so they're like rock band after all?

Oh you!

Anyway - I understand they started off as a duo and as they found they were accumulating a more rock-ish audience they started adding members. But seriously Tuomas, it's not like an electronic act with more than 2 members is a revelation these days is it?

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

Also, I think having lots of members meant they could split up and do live shows all around the world simultaneously or something; a bit like that big Transformer made up of lots of little Transformers, but with live shows.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think that's the case - they were doing "DJ sets" as the original duo plus MC a couple of years ago, and have now just slimmed down to the duo and are making brostep
