Current / recent artists who you predict will make a succesful comeback in the future after they have gone through a lull

Following on from this tread:

Are there any artist(s) who, many years after the quality of their work had dwindled or halted altogether, actually came back and released another significant album?

Lets widen the scope to include both artists that go through and artistic and/or commercial lull

My first prediction: Jarvis Cocker

Robin Goad (rgoad), Thursday, 3 November 2005 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

Esp true if you think of him as kind of a cross between Scott Walker and Tom Jones - the former having made a great artistic comeback, the latter a commercial comeback, bother after a number of years lull

Robin Goad (rgoad), Thursday, 3 November 2005 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

I think it depends what kind of commercial comeback we're talking about here. A full-blown Green Day type comeback or a "mature-album" NPR-circuit kind of comeback.

REM will have both a commercial and an NPR comeback. They've been in an extended lull, but they'll eventually get it together. Particularly if Bill Berry rejoins.

Pearl Jam, too. They'll be massive again.

I think if Pearl Jam had taken a break a little sooner (instead of releasing endless streams of crap) they could have already had a comeback by now.

bet greenday makes another comeback 7 years from now that is also an "NPR-cicuit" kind of comeback. also, look out for them rolling stones in a couple years too...

Wolf Eyes, for sure. I predict "The Taste of Wolf Eyes" circa 2020, when apocalyptic noise music has become the norm and all the kids who sold their guitars and bought shovels to beat their synthesizers with are looking for "roots."

Same goes for the rest of the Load roster, too, but to a lesser extent. The true noise purists will talk about how Wolf Eyes sold out to Sub Pop, and go back to listening to their homemade Kites cassettes.

RACHEL STEVENS

A Blur reunion once the whole Gorrilaz fad fizzles...

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Duran Duran will make their fourth successful comeback in 2009.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

Do they have to be in a lull now?

Either Malkmus or Beck.

Also, Prince.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Thursday, 3 November 2005 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

nah I fear malkmus will never make a succesful comeback..
But he will reunite Pavement of course.

Ludo (Ludo), Thursday, 3 November 2005 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

I think Malkmus will someday make very good Old Man records.

I also think that Pavement will never reunite, unless it's without either SM or Spiral Stairs.

Harmony Korine

Ditto on the Duran Duran.

Also Hanson.

And if I may be so optimistic, Andy Bell/Erasure.

This barely counts but I'd really be cheering Underworld on if they bucked the trend for dissapointing "big beasts of UK techno/electronica" comeback records.

Think about how awesome the Ying Yang Twins will be in their 50's and 60's. They could play the adorable dirty old men part so well.

i hope you're right about Jarvis Cocker

splates (splates), Friday, 4 November 2005 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

Also Hanson.

I just heard them on NPR, actually. Their new stuff just sounds like mmmbop with deeper voices. Oh, and also no memorable hooks.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 4 November 2005 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

Which was ironic considering how much time they spent complaining about the way the industry's current methods squash "quality music". I've never heard anything that sounded more stereotypically industry-oriented in my life.
