System of a Down - Hypnotize

The single is pretty good - boring video though.

I'm thinking the album will best "Mezmerize", though, based on the song descriptions I've read. This sucker should leak within the next few days...

Thoughtson the single? Any of you insider folks heard this yet?

I like the single, and the song from it they were playing on tour, "Kill Rock'n'Roll". Mezmerize is great, I hope Hypnotize is as good but honestly I'm kind of dreading making an either/or choice on my end of year lists.

Is this going to be just another collection of songs or is it meant to be different from Mezmerize (i.e. more mellow or more angry in general)

The impression I'm under is that it is supposed to be darker and more "serious", if not completely discarding their bizarro tendencies.

I've been kinda let down by this as well as "Question". They're a little boring when they're not spazzing out.

>They're a little boring when they're not spazzing out.

Their earlier slow songs ("Spiders" and "Aerials") were both good, but yeah, "Question" blows. I don't think I'll be buying this new one, and I did buy the earlier disc. I didn't like Steal This Album much, either; I think they peaked with Toxicity.

I like this song quite a bit, actually. Bodes well.

Any more where that came from, Simon H?

You know what irks me? That the misspelling of "MeZmerize" is not supported by a corresponding misspelling in "Hypnotize."

You know what irks me? That the misspelling of "MeZmerize" is not supported by a corresponding misspelling in "Hypnotize."

What's even more annoying is the repeated line of, "the most loneliest day of my life," in "Lonely Day". What are they, six years old?

a. begrand (a begrand), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

"Lonely Day" is by far the worst of the 23 songs on both records. By a huge fucking margin. It should not exist. "She's Like Heroin" and "Violent Pornography" are regrettable as well.

Overall though I think "Hypnotize" is the better album, if only for "Stealing Society", "Tentative", "Dreaming" and the full "Soldier Side".

Simon H. (Simon H.), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I found the goofier moments on Mezmerize worked rather well. On Hypnotize that ill-advised trio of songs, "Vicinity of Obscenity", "She's Like Heroin", and the abysmal "Lonely Day" derail things, especially coming right on the heels of "Holy Mountains", the best song on the entire two-disc set.
