Cod reggae or a master reconfiguring a foreign genre in his own image?

It never fails to bring a smile to my face. One of the last times he was irrepressible.

Classic. How can you even ask?

JC-L (JC-L), Friday, 4 November 2005 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

Heard it on my ipod yesterday, while running. Classic all the way. Wondered what Marley and friends thought of it. B side to the 7" dub is good too!

peepee (peepee), Friday, 4 November 2005 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

Just thinking about Stevie today, actually. Classic of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 November 2005 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

this is one of the two Stevie Wonder songs I actually still enjoy hearing on the radio (probably because I've only heard it three or four times).

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 4 November 2005 03:10 (nineteen years ago)

one of his songs i don't like.

T/S: "master blaster" vs. "watching the detectives"

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 4 November 2005 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

This one took me longer to warm up to than any Stevie song. But classic, et al.

I'm finding 'Master Blaster' vs 'Sir Duke' a tough battle.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 4 November 2005 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

His last undeniable great moment.

'sir duke'. why? you can feel it all over... the sample at the beginning to ATCQ's 'after hours' always makes me smile. but 'i wish' pwns ALL.

Is Hotter Than July worth owning?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 5 November 2005 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Classic classic classic! Maybe my favorite Stevie song...up there w/ Sir Duke, Signed Sealed Delivered, etc.

musically (musically), Monday, 5 December 2005 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

Classic! A friend of mine once told me he thought it was rubbish because "you can't dance to it."

In what universe can't you dance to Master Blaster?

T/S: "master blaster" vs. "watching the detectives"

-- fact checking cuz (factcheckingcu...), November 4th, 2005.

Gonna go with Master Blaster on that one. But not better than Boogie on Reggae Woman.

And yes, Hotter Than July, Stevie's (no pun intended) bookend to Talking Book, is totally worth owning.

New thread topic deviation: order these Stevie Wonder albums from most to least essential:

Where I'm Coming From
Talking Book
Music of My Mind
Innervisions
Fulfillingness First Finale
Songs in the Key of Life
Hotter Than July

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 5 December 2005 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

My picks:

1) Songs in the Key of Life
2) Innervisions
3) Fulfillingness First Finale
4) Talking Book
5) Music of My Mind
6) Hotter Than July
7) Where I'm Coming From

But thank god we live in a world where such nonsensical restraints are but an Orwellian fantasy.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 5 December 2005 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

Classic! I was just listening to it today.

Forks.... Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants obviously pwns all.

;)

Aw, crap. How do you do italics on this board?

R. J. Greene, Monday, 5 December 2005 06:31 (nineteen years ago)

< / i >
Y'know, on the advice of a good friend, I never listened to Secret Life.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 5 December 2005 06:41 (nineteen years ago)

His last undeniable great moment.

Do you not "Do I Do"?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 5 December 2005 06:46 (nineteen years ago)

That is a good friend indeed. I wish I had friends as good as yours.

R. J. Greene, Monday, 5 December 2005 07:06 (nineteen years ago)

Of course it's great. I remember buying this single along with Black Sabbath's paranoid as a teenager. My friend Colin turned the latter into an ashtray, but no-one messes with Mr Wonder. Sir Duke is even better - one of the best introductions ever.

How very appropriate...

well duh yeah

(8 months later)

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

I think there are numerous better reggae pastiches than this one. And, I mean, I really like Stevie Wonder a lot, but by 1980 he was starting to lose it.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Great song. If you like this, look up "Ivory Madonna,"
recorded before they discovered synthesizers.

Fucking absolutely.

I can't imagine coming up in the period where Dirty Mind, Off the Wall and Hotter Than July were all out around the same time.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

within a year of each other, actually.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

deej, that fact that I did and it's gone is what causes my current shitty attitude...
