Who will prevail?

How high will an album with 300 points (a first place vote and no other support) rank? A single?

ranks _It Takes A Nation of Millions..._ as the top album of the '80s, and "The Message" as the top single. Where will ILM rank them? And which ILM top 10 picks will be lowest on Acclaimed Music's critical consensus?

I'm notoriously bad at predicting these things But I'd guess;

Top 10 Albums: Public Enemy, Prince -Sign o Times, Kate Bush - Hounds, Human League - Dare, Kraftwerk - Computer World, REM - Murmur, Smiths - Queen is dead, JAMC - Psychocandy, NWA- Straight outta Compton, Sonic Youth- Daydream nation

Top 10 singles: Kate Bush - Running up that hill, Prince - Kiss, Grandmaster Flash - Message, Human League - Don't you want me, Michael Jackson - Billie Jean, A Guy called Gerald - Voodoo Ray, Madonna - Into the groove, PSB - West end girls, Joy Division - Love will tear us apart, Yoko Ono - Walking on thin ice

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 4 November 2005 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

Shouldn't it go "mamase mamasa mama Makossa"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 4 November 2005 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

i hear it as the former myself.

i think 'Blue Monday' or 'Billie Jean' will win the single vote.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 4 November 2005 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, "Blue Monday" is most certainly in the top 10, probably in the top 5. Is there any consensus on what the best Madonna single of the eighties is? 'Cause I've always thought it's "Like a Prayer".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 4 November 2005 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

I switched my number 1 and 2 singles at the last minute because I thought that no one would vote for my original number 1, but there'd be at least a couple for my number 2.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 4 November 2005 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty certain that no one's going to vote for my #1 either, but I left it there, where it belongs.

Oh, and it's "Into the Groove" in my book, Tuomas.

naranjito (Koens), Friday, 4 November 2005 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i expect that one to finish highest.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 4 November 2005 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm. People are forgetting the Cure's Disintegration. That's gotta be top 10. Also Pixies Surfer Rosa. I'm just wondering where my top single (Plimsouls "Million Miles Away") will end up. Positive it won't be top 20, but will it place at all?

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Friday, 4 November 2005 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'm guessing that the 300 points for top place should be enough to ensure everyone's first place choice gets into the top 100.

(the lower the voter turnout the more likely this is I suppose).

bidfurd__, Friday, 4 November 2005 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

I'm notoriously bad at predicting these things But I'd guess;
Top 10 Albums: Public Enemy, Prince -Sign o Times, Kate Bush - Hounds, Human League - Dare, Kraftwerk - Computer World, REM - Murmur, Smiths - Queen is dead, JAMC - Psychocandy, NWA- Straight outta Compton, Sonic Youth- Daydream nation

Top 10 singles: Kate Bush - Running up that hill, Prince - Kiss, Grandmaster Flash - Message, Human League - Don't you want me, Michael Jackson - Billie Jean, A Guy called Gerald - Voodoo Ray, Madonna - Into the groove, PSB - West end girls, Joy Division - Love will tear us apart, Yoko Ono - Walking on thin ice

None of those albums are in my top ten, and one of those singles are in my top ten apart from Voodoo Ray.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

Er... that should be none apart from Voodoo Ray.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

Or just: one, Voodoo Ray.

Me: one of the albums, one of the songs.

naranjito (Koens), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, no doubt individual top 10's will be very different, fwiw I have 4 albums and 2 singles in my top 1. However when it's tallied up and individual posters quirks are ironed out I'd guess these (and the ones mentioned above) would finish highly.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 4 November 2005 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

doing pretty well so far, but as a request, can we keep actual ballots (especially our specific #1s) out of this thread, because then it turns from a PREDICTIONS THREAD into a CALCULATIONS THREAD which maybe is a fine thing, but why not have twice the fun & do it somewhere else.

is there really that much support for the human league album to take it to top 10? will all those votes be coming from the uk? i doubt murmur will go that high either. or even sonic youth. or..

in any case, i thought blue monday was a lock for #1.

andrew s (andrew s), Friday, 4 November 2005 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Brits and Euros getting all excited over "Blue Monday" = CUET!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Friday, 4 November 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

ya, I'm not even sure that "Blue Monday" cracked my top 100.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 4 November 2005 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

where is the love for my bloody valentine?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 4 November 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

I doubt "Blue Monday" will be the highest-ranked NO single, though it's still a lock for top 40, 20 or so.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 4 November 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

If Yoko Ono tops Marvin Gaye, I'll be aghast. Funny that "Sexual Healing" hasn't been mentioned yet. Of course, neither has "Rockit". I guess this is more of an "alternative" poll.

I definitely thought The Pixies would make the top ten albums. But based on previous polls, it seems like artists with several great albums or singles have a worse chance of making it up the charts 'cause their votes get spread around.

viborgu, Friday, 4 November 2005 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

where is the love for my bloody valentine?

See ILX 90s poll.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

I predict that Blue Monday will be beaten by one and maybe two other New Order songs.

I predict that Sexual Healing will not crack the top 50.

I predict that at least one Pixies and one Cure album will make the top 10.

I predict that a Human League single will make the top 10, but not an album.

I predict that the top vote getter in both categories will be British.

I predict that I will disagree with the top single wholeheartedly.

I predict that there will be too much Kate Bush in this poll for my tastes.

I predict that Daydream Nation will be top 20.

I predict that R.E.M. will not make the top 10 in either poll due to splitting of votes.

I predict that if Voodoo Ray makes the top 10 I'll call you all a buncha losers.

I predict the only lock for top 10 single is Love Will Tear Us Apart.

I predict that Madonna will make it no higher than #13, and it will be for "Into the Groove".

I predict that the most surprising placer will be by The Police.

I predict that a majority of the top 10 singles will be entirely derivative of rock from the '60s.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

I predict that R.E.M. will not make the top 10 in either poll due to splitting of votes.
I predict that the most surprising placer will be by The Police.
I predict that a majority of the top 10 singles will be entirely derivative of rock from the '60s.

besides these, you seem pretty right on.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

If "Into The Groove" is the version that's on the flip of the Angel 12" then it's my fave. There's something slightly off with the version on Immaculate Collection.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, those were my leaps, but I predict that at least one of those is correct.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

awesome.

Just out of curiosity, what potential 80s top-tenners would you consider derivative of the 60s?

Also, I don't think you have too much to worry about re: "Voodoo Ray"--top 40 is the highest that thing's going.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

I predict that Sexual Healing will not crack the top 50.
I'm curious about this. One of the first hits to use an 808, with one of the most incredible vocalists ever. So, yeah, where's the passion for this song?

I predict that there will be too much Kate Bush in this poll for my tastes.
hmm...

I predict that if Voodoo Ray makes the top 10 I'll call you all a buncha losers.
hmmmmm...

I predict the only lock for top 10 single is Love Will Tear Us Apart.
I predict that I will disagree with the top single wholeheartedly.
I predict that at least one Pixies and one Cure album will make the top 10.

These all sound about right to me.

viborgu, Friday, 4 November 2005 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

If "Sexual Healing" received just one #100 vote, it'd still be too generous.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 4 November 2005 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

Re: '60s sounding singles, I would say if the following bands are in the Top 10, I would be correct:

The La's
Echo & the Bunnymen
The Church
R.E.M.
Stone Roses
XTC

A stretch I realize now...Probably only La's, Echo, and R.E.M. are in, but you never know.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Friday, 4 November 2005 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

there's no way the La's make top ten. You got a much better chance with the Roses and XTC.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 4 November 2005 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

Ten Reasons Why Silk's "Freak Me" is 100000x better than "Sexual Healing"

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 November 2005 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

You think so? I thought "There She Goes" was pretty much considered a touchstone of britpop.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Friday, 4 November 2005 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

a touchstone maybe, but not top ten untouchable or anything.

Ten Reasons Why Silk's "Freak Me" is 100000x better than "Sexual Healing"

are you saying you agree, John?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 4 November 2005 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

No, I just think that thread is amusing. :-)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 November 2005 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, that was a good one.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 5 November 2005 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

If "When Doves Cry" doesn't make top 10, I will expect ritual self-disembowelments all around.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 5 November 2005 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

where is the love for the stone roses?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 5 November 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Highest-rated album of the '80s on acclaimedmusic not nominated by ILM: Peter Gabriel, So, #29.

PREDICT: Highest acclaimedmusic-ranked album nominated for, but not voted onto, ILM top 100?

Say I: Tom Waits, either Swordfishtrombones (#20) or Rain Dogs (#24).

Highest-rated single of the '80s not nominated by ILM: Prince, "Sign O' The Times."

PREDICT: Highest ranked single nominated for, but not voted onto, ILM top 100?

Say I: Public Enemy "Bring the Noise" (#22) brought down by vote-splitting.

Guayaquil (eephus), Sunday, 6 November 2005 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

Also: one first-place vote would get beat by any record that a mere 6 people placed in their top 50; so as long as turnout's not totally dismal I think a first-place vote alone won't rank.

I predict that R.E.M. will not make the top 10 in either poll due to splitting of votes.

But Murmur is the consensus favorite, I think; it'll make top 10 and drive the other R.E.M. records far down the list.

Guayaquil (eephus), Sunday, 6 November 2005 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

Matt, I thought you'd say "into the groove"-wich has a little early 60's feel to it.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 6 November 2005 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think "Voodoo Ray" will carry a dramatic US/UK split ... the more UK people that voted, the higher it will finish. It's really hard to predict where it will end up without knowing who voted.

I will toss out a few more Matt-esque predictions

I predict that "The Stone Roses" will finish Top Ten, even though nobody will admit that they voted for it.

I predict that many ILM Prince fans didn't bother to vote in this poll and his material won't finish nearly as high as you all think it will/deserves to. The same applies to the Cure ... maybe.

I predict the only lock for top 10 single is Love Will Tear Us Apart. ... agreed, ergo, it will be #1.

I predict we will be surprised (and overjoyed) at an unexpectedly high ranking for at least one Eric B and Rakim track.

I predict that vote splitting will sink the Human League.

I predict that one U2 song will crack the top 30.

I predict that Saint Etienne:90's Poll = Pet Shop Boys:80's poll (I would not be shocked if all four of their nominated singles make the top 100, they will certainly all crack the top 200, and no matter what happens, half of the posters will complain about so many of their tracks making the list).

I predict that techno and house will be criminally overlooked, with the possible exception of "Strings of Life", which will be ranked far too high and isn't even that great of a track.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 6 November 2005 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

"Voodoo Ray" will probably be the "Renegade Snares" of the 80s poll. I bet it'll hit top 40.

Stone Roses top ten, sure.

Vote-splitting could be a bitch for the Human League, but I think at least "Don't You Want Me?" will weather it--top 50 at least.

More like Saint Etienne : 90s Poll = New Order : 80s poll. They had what, eleven songs nominated? And with "Regret" placing in the top ten of the 90s poll, I think it's safe to assume they'll do reasonably well in their prime decade.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 6 November 2005 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking more along the lines of numbers + outrage for Saint Etienne in the 90's poll. Everyone who wasn't a fan was incensed that they placed five singles, and even those who were fans thought it was overkill.

People will obviously be far more accepting of multiple New Order singles in the top 100.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 6 November 2005 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

I predict that many ILM Prince fans didn't bother to vote in this poll

This implies there are people on ILM who aren't Prince fans. The mind boggles.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 6 November 2005 02:14 (nineteen years ago)

you think there will be that much outrage? I think the St. Etienne backlash was more based on suprprise that there were that many diehard St. Etienne fans out there--considering that PSB were one of the most popular groups of the late 80s (on both sides of the pond), as well as one of the most acclaimed (retroactively if not at the time, I couldn't say for certain) and that there've been countless threads about them here...I can't see too many complainers. But I could be wrong.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 6 November 2005 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

Prince - "1999"
Prince - "Adore"
Prince - "Alphabet Street"
Prince - "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"
Prince - "Kiss”
Prince - "Little Red Corvette”
Prince - "Uptown"
Prince - "When Doves Cry"

Aside from "Alphabet Street," "Uptown" and maybe "Adore," I'd be very surprised if any of these didn't make it.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 6 November 2005 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

I predict that one U2 song will crack the top 30.

haha my singles chart ended up really surprising me and that's all I'm saying.

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 6 November 2005 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't do nearly as much research as I did for the 70s poll (mostly because the York library and Limewire are no longer available). Eh, it probably wouldn't have been as rewarding anyway.

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 6 November 2005 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

I think "Voodoo Ray" will carry a dramatic US/UK split ... the more UK people that voted, the higher it will finish. It's really hard to predict where it will end up without knowing who voted.

I'll attest to this, since I live in the US, was buying lots of records when this song apparently came out, and I have never heard of it in my entire life.

Guayaquil (eephus), Sunday, 6 November 2005 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

Regarding Murmur being the consensus R.E.M. favorite, I'm not so sure about that. But of course my favorite R.E.M. is mid-to-late '80s, from Life's Rich Pageant on. Not that I think the early albums aren't great--I adore Reckoning--I just think they put it all together on their late '80s stuff (but only about 40% of Green unfortunately).

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Sunday, 6 November 2005 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder what Thriller will do. I didn't even vote for it.

Cunga (Cunga), Sunday, 6 November 2005 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

Yeah, Fables Of The Reconstruction topped my REM picks. I like Life's Rich Pageant, too, but I think it's a little more polished and less true to their roots. They're both consistently great albums. After Document, it's all downhill. Goes to show, the prediction of vote-splitting is OTM.

I'm a stateside voter, and "Voodoo Ray" was in my top 25, although behind "Baby Wants To Ride". Of course, I didn't hear either song until about 15 years past their release. And only one Prince song made my list.

viborgu, Sunday, 6 November 2005 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I've always considered Thriller a children's album, since I was 11 when it came out. Despite its merits, I can't separate it from my youth. (Now with Duran Duran I have no such problems...)

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Sunday, 6 November 2005 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

This thread makes me feel like none of my choices will make the top 100.

Rough Trade pretty much ruled the 80's poll-wise for me, that's all I'm sayin'.

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 7 November 2005 03:50 (nineteen years ago)

I predict that techno and house will be criminally overlooked, with the possible exception of "Strings of Life", which will be ranked far too high and isn't even that great of a track.

I agree with you on both counts. There weren't too many techno or house tracks in the nineties poll either. And I think, out of the nominated Derrick May tracks, both "Nude Photo" and "R-Theme" are definitely better tha SoL, but they're lucky if they make it to the top 100.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 7 November 2005 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

"Temple of Love" at #1!

Am I right, folks?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 7 November 2005 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

No one has mentioned Doolittle. It better be higher than Surfer Rosa.

I predict You're Living All Over Me and Crazy Rhythyms will be in there somewhere......right?

I also predict that metal will be overlooked (ie no Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden, etc)

James Morris (HorrayJames), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

Prince's 'Kiss' will top the singles, Talk Talk's 'Spirit Of Eden' the albums.

That's all I'm going to say.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 5 December 2005 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

Dear Santa,

If I had one wish that I could wish this holiday season, it would be that all the children to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace the first installment of ILM '80s Poll results.

If I had two wishes I could make this holiday season, the first would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing in the spirit of harmony and peace the first installment of ILM '80s Poll results. And the second would be for 30 million dollars a month to be given to me, tax-free in a Swiss bank account.

You know, if I had three wishes I could make this holiday season, the first, of course, would be for all the children of the world to get together and sing; the second would be for the 30 million dollars every month to me; and the third would be for encompassing power over every living being in the entire universe.

And if I had four wishes that I could make this holiday season, the first would be the crap about the kids definitely, the second would be for the 30 million, the third would be for all the power, and the fourth would be to set aside one month each year to have an extended 31-day orgasm, to be brought out slowly by Rosanna Arquette and that model Paulina-somebody, I can't think of her name. Of course my lovely wife can come too and she's behind me one hundred percent here, I guarantee it.

Wait a minute, maybe the sex thing should be the first wish, so if I made that the first wish, because it could all go boom tomorrow, then what do you got, y'know? No, no, the kids, the kids singing would be great, that would be nice.

But wait a minute, who am I kidding? They're not going to be able to get all those kids together. I mean, the logistics of the thing is impossible, more trouble than it's worth! So -- we reorganize! Here we go. First, the sex thing. We go with that. Second, the money. No, we got with the power second, then the money. And then the kids.

Oh wait, oh jeez, I forgot about revenge against my enemies! Okay, I need revenge against all my enemies, they should die like pigs in hell! That would be my fourth wish.

And, of course, my fifth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace the first installment of ILM '80s Poll results. Thank you everybody and Merry Christmas.

Me: "People are also upset about 'Funkytown' being only #59."
Mrs. Haikunym: "'Funkytown' is a crap song. 'Tainted Love' is the greatest song of the decade."
-- Haikunym (zinogu...), April 11th, 2006 10:57 PM.

NB: Mrs. Haikunym was awarded a summa cum laude by Harvard College for her thesis about the American cultural meaning of Elvis Presley.
-- Haikunym (zinogu...), April 11th, 2006 11:02 PM.

trivia question: how many years after (or before) hearing soft cell's recording of "tainted love" did you hear the original version? i think for me it was about 15 years after.
-- gypsy mothra (meetm...), April 11th, 2006 11:12 PM.

Wait, it's a cover song? I HAD NO IDEA.
-- Haikunym (zinogu...), April 11th, 2006 11:26 PM.

For what it's worth, I prefer "Smalltown Boy" to the song that's probably going to win this poll. Such raw emotion there, it's one of those songs that made me cry upon first hearing it.
-- Tuomas (lixnix...), April 11th, 2006 11:54 PM.

Whatever. I'm still amazed that we found 54 singles to rank above "Word Up."

I'll continue to stand behind my predictions upthread ... most notably, #1 single = Love Will Tear Us Apart (too obvious?)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 06:45 (nineteen years ago)

“Tainted Love”
Performed By Gloria Jones
Written by Ed Cobb
Released on 45 by Champion Records, 1964

If the name Gloria Jones rings a bell, you may know her as the widow of Marc Bolan, and the driver of the car in which he died.

Wasn't "Tainted Love" originally sung by a guy? That's the version I've heard at least, the one that sounds a bit like a country song.

I think "Blue Monday" will beat "Love Will Tear Us Apart".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

In any sane world, the #1 single would be "Little Red Corvette." I suspect the Prince vote ended up split between too damn many great singles...

But to be sure someone would have to revive the nominations thread (hint hint).

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 07:15 (nineteen years ago)

"Bizarre Love Triangle" was nominated, right? I think that'll beat "Blue Monday" and be in a dead heat for #1 with LWTUA

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

My prediction is that my #1 song (Eighth Wonder)
and my #2 song (Bring It On) will NOT make the top 100.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

It's probably safe to assume at this point that Ratt's "Round and Round" will not make the Top 100.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

I'd be shocked, shocked is Love Will Tear Us Apart is not the number one single. It seems like a fait accompli.

The highest New Order song will be Temptation.

Top Ten Albums (in no order)

Sign o' the Times, Nation of Millions, The Queen is Dead, Murmur, Dare, Daydream Nation, Closer, Double Nickels, some Kate Bush record, and Three Feet HIgh and Rising

FINAL WORD: THE BEST SINGLES OF THE '80S

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

um not to spoil anything (though yeah there's some definite giggles inspired by this thread) but three things people maybe might wanna consider when filling in their brackets: people got to vote for 100 songs/albums AND 1st place was worth 300 points AND over 120 people voted. WHAT WOULDA AFFECTED THE OUTCOME SIGNIFICANTLY: if people only got to vote for just their favorite single ('winner take all' a la presidential elections) (#'s 6, 7, and 8 received NO first place votes i think just glancing) OR if people only got to vote for 20 ("call me" only had two top 20 votes and made 66). o and cincinnatti/purdue ALWAYS choke - put them in yr final four at yr own risk.

i can say no more.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Bizarre Love Triangle is going to do this, I think.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

songs that have not yet appeared that seem possible contenders for the top 20:

bizarre love triangle
love will tear us apart
kiss
when doves cry
girls just wanna have fun
into the groove
fight the power (and/or bring the noise, but i'll be surprised if there are two p.e. tracks in the top 20)
it takes two
west end girls
going back to cali
billie jean

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 13 April 2006 05:26 (nineteen years ago)

Also

relax
under the milky way
walk this way

It's probably safe to assume at this point that Ratt's "Round and Round" will not make the Top 100.

I know at least one voter who had it in the top ten.

I'm a little more worried about "Stone In Love" and "She Sells Sanctuary."

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 13 April 2006 06:16 (nineteen years ago)

I predict the Pet Shop Boys still have two tracks to make it: "Rent" and "West End Girls".

Should also make it in the Top 20:

"I Feel For You"
"Just Like Heaven"
"How Soon Is Now"
"This Charming Man"
"Debaser"
"Just Can't Get Enough"

Others that might stand a chance:

"Fade To Grey"
"Safety Dance"
"I Can't Wait"
"Situation"
"Total Eclipse of the Heart"
"You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)"
"Song To The Siren"
"Perfect Kiss"
"I Ran"

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Thursday, 13 April 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

LeRooLeRoo, I won't name names, but a couple of those were indeed pretty high on my ballot...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

I think there's more to come from The Smiths (it would be bizarre if Ask or Bigmouth were their most popular tunes). I think Debaser will turn up shortly. I'm wondering whether I Am The Resurrection has made the cut. I'm slightly saddened by the lack of Adam & The Ants. I'm amazed that Tainted Love was so low. That is all.

So I was off by one about Love Will Tear Us Apart. But I called Temptation, baby!
