There are not too many go-go studio releases anymore, and now because of bootleg worries, there are even less live go-go cdrs...

Thanks for the link. Reading now. I would like to again request recommendation(s) of really-great studio go-go albums... Anyone?

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 4 November 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

the trouble funk early singles/live two-disc set is fuckin mindblowing...although the live part's the best. pick it up!

I forget the name of the Rare Essence album I like. I think the Good to Go soundtrack was pretty good too. Way back I treasured my Huckabucks studio-recorded cassette. I'm not sure what other formats that came out in, or whether it has been reissued on cd. Not sure what happened to the group either.

Troll Ebay for a copy of the "Go Go Crankin" compilation, put together in Go Go's heyday by the go go mogul Maxx Kidd. Hot!

I don't think there are any truly great studio albums, but I could be wrong. It's always been more of a live thing. The greatest go-go recordings I've heard are all live.

I have a Huckabucks studio-recorded CD with the Budweiser song on it.

i've just yet to find a live recording that really hits me when i'm wearing my headphones out-and-about... the bootlegs work great when you've got them cranked on a home stereo, but everything else... some of the old chuck brown stuff is great - but it's way more organic funk feeling than the contemporary go-go think i'm also trying to hunt out.

thanks for the recs above - i'll look into em.

Someone should put together a 2 disc collection of the best go-go tracks. Disc 1 could be '80-'89 and disc 2 would be '90-present.

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 7 November 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

that article is mad depressing. I reminisce about freshman year chilling with my roommate from D.C. who had a ton of Backyard Band live tapes.

they did: it's called The Beat and it's the soundtrack to the book of the same name: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005NWNW/qid=1131325219/sr=1-25/ref=sr_1_25/103-7897066-2763805?v=glance&s=music

the CD is GREAT. I haven't read the book yet, though.

ha!

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 7 November 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

I've skimmed it but not really sat down and read it!

I wonder if Rare Essence and Backyard will ever record and release new studio albums?

Producer Rich Harrison, who once played in a go-go band(as did Amerie) is supposed to be starting a new DC label. Maybe he can help some band write and record new material, rather than just go-go adaptations of current hits.

Not to excerbate the situation, but what's Go Go like? Anybody got a single good track to YSI? I'm curious, but ignorant...

js (honestengine), Monday, 7 November 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

JS, there's been several go-go threads, you can click on that Amazon link above and hear 30 second samples, and probably google lots of info...

curmudgeon, Monday, 7 November 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

i'm watching a bunch of youtube clips, these new go go beats are pretty heavy. ccb, tcb, ucb?

I have that Troublefunk comp mentioned up above. Some fantastic stuff on it and the live stuff is amazing.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 January 2008 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

man I'm turning into Stringer Bell, the sound of congas makes me shut off WKYS faster than Chris Brown's voice these days.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 11 January 2008 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

haha

these bands don't even have congas, they're bringing back the rototoms!

Jordan, Friday, 11 January 2008 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

x-post ha.

Mambo Sauce and CCB (Critical Condition Band) have both gotten lots of DC radio airplay. I'm pretty sure I like 'em more than Alex in Baltimore (on some other thread I think we discussed this). I've seen Mambo Sauce and they were fun. Definately some nice beats, although the r'n'b/pop friendly female vocals that help get them and CCB local airplay rub some folks the wrong way. Some CCB songs I like more than others. The old-timers are still at it as well--Chuck Brown, Sugar Bear from EU, etc. The PApalace website sells go-go mixes, dvds, live cdrs, downloads and more.

Chris Richards, former member of DC Dischord band Q and Not U, and a writer for the Washington Post who loves go-go, rap, r'n'b, dancehall and more is moving to NY to edit Fader magazine. Look for Fader to give more love to go-go.

Awesome. Are there still any go-go shows on DC radio? I know that PGC used to have a Sunday night go-go hour.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 12 January 2008 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

I think WPGC still has that show, and I think WKYS has one on Wednesdays.
