Modern Lovers

Alex in NYC, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dead Kennedys? Sorry that was a bad one.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pixies? The Cars? Ok, maybe not the Cars.

Sean, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aerosmith, The Cars, The Remains, The Standells, The Lyres, DMZ, The Real Kids, Modern Lovers.

fritz, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What, no New Kids on the Block?

Kristin Hersh, in band and out, all the way.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fields of salmon, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I second Alex/NYC. I liked Morphine too, but after applying to the bulletin board's executive committee for a saxophone exemption, and being told it could take weeks to get a decision, I just bagged it. There will be no sax round here. Now step.

Hunter, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

MoB, Pixies etc...

JM, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Take your pick here.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoa, Donna Summer's from Massachusetts. No contest then.

Ian, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Come.

Ben Squircle, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From 1974-ish to 1976 the best band from Boston was "The Modern Lovers". From 1976-1979 the best and most influential band live and on disc was "The Girls." For many reasons: MOB, Pixies, Till Tuesday, Christmas, and dozens of others, began their groups or re-arranged their sound/ stance after witnessing the postpunk template of "The Girls." Where has everyone been? See Mission of Burma Classic or Dud thread. O yea, DMZ were extremely good, at least live, circa 1978. La Peste same deal. Nothing else matters after 1981. Well, maybe Cul de Sac.

Bob, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

poops mcgee, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Morphine, Come, Sebadoh/djr ??! More CMJ Indie rock garbage, one and all.

B, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind coming here, wasting all my time.

dave q, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey dave q, you're JUST WHAT I NEEDED.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

2nd or 3rd or whatever Real Kids, DMZ/Lyres & Modern Lovers tho'.

duane, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there really a question? The Pixies. Let this thread die... it's definitely the Pixies. Morphine... ummmmm, not quite.

SP Morrissey, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cul de Sac

Ken Boone, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Skippy and the shit dogs.

Ally, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to be in Duane's gang.

Andrew L, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
Lyres,Turbines Del fuegos (I think they were from N.H.)

jeffk, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
Lyres, La Peste, DMZ, STandells, Flat Earth Society, Beacon Street Union, J. Giels Band, Cars (1st 2 records)

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Dinosaur, Morphine, Pixies.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's either The Pixies or The Cars. Aerosmith would have gotten a vote if they'd never done the "Cryin'Crazy Amazing Craz-Amazi-Cryin'" thing.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Last Rights / Negative FX

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear more of doomie's pixies hate!

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Still the only acceptable answer.......

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Modern Lovers and then Mission of Burman and then Aerosmith a bit behind those two

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

But The Modern Lovers were tedious and awful.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Modern Lovers, Morphine, and Jack Kerouac. Seriously, the Jack Kerouac Reads From On The Road cd is great. Fucking terrific. He's drunk and singing like Tony Bennett (he probably thought he was singing like Frank Sinatra, but nope, sorry Jack, you was wearing TB's sheets).

horacemann (mybrowserisknackered), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

dan: nuh-uh!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but Dan, don't you think Wheeler looks exactly like Jonathan Richman? If you think of it that way, the band is far more interesting.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, you know the pathways to my heart far too well. I fear you.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Imagine this: Jonathan Richman standing in the Boston Ritz, wearing a Britney tee and throwing flaming cotton balls on the ground, surrounded by drunken NYC chixor. INSTANT COOL.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I could like any of these other very fine groups mentioned on this thread anywhere near as much as I liked Morphine, but I just don't see that happening. I certainly love lots of these groups (esp. Modern Lovers), but none of their music gets deep down into the flows & eddies of my soul quite like the low-end-supreme sexy snaky loveliness of what them Morphine fellas created. Buena buena buena.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

But The Modern Lovers were tedious and awful.

Silly, silly Dan....it's YOU that is tedious and awful, not the mighty Modern Lovers.

kidding.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, Alex. (Besides, I feel kind of tedious and awful lately.) (<SympathyBlock preemptive="true">I AM NOT UNHAPPY AND THAT WAS NOT A CRY FOR HELP/CONDOLENCES </SympathyBlock>)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

volcano suns.

"She's as sharp as a razorblade, but she could cut my wrists open just the same"

blutroniq (blutroniq), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

How is it possible that we've gone this far into the thread with no mention of Joe Pernice?

TMFTML (TMFTML), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Bongloads of Righteous Boo

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Til Tuesday?

Are you high? They wouldn't be the best band out of a one band town.

trish, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah! Mission of Burma (Burman?? LOL!! Mission of Shelly Berman?) was superb!

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe not up there with the Modern Lovers or Mission o'Burma (the noted Boston Irish band), but I always liked the Dogmatics...

pauls00, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I know a Nun named Sister Serena. Nobody's meaner than Sister Serena.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Shouldn't this thread be over by now? I thought we all agreed that it was the Modern Lovers! Case closed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

pixies, throwing muses. but morphine gets my vote for #1
sebadoh /Dinosaur scene was more Northhampton~scene, not Boston.
and the shows were either hot or cold.
morphine never had a bad show.
i am few years too young to rememebr a young Modern Lovers, but Jonathan Richman needs to STOP touring

ke[hm, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Magnetic Fields.

end communication.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Thursday, 29 May 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Honourable mentions to Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh but it's clearly THE PIXIES! THE PIXIES! THE PIXIES!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 29 May 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Once more for good measure: THE PIXIES!!!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 29 May 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)
