The band DMBQ were apparently involved in a horrible interstate accident on their way to a show in New York. China, the drummer, passed away.. the other band members are recovering and doing better.

Still, this is awful awful news. I wish I had a source; and I'm sure one is coming. I give my best to the remaining band members, family, and friends :(

from todd p:

Hello

It is with a lot of grief and weariness that I announce that tonite's DMBQ and friends show @ Club Exit has been cancelled following a tragic car accident today.

DMBQ's van rolled from I-95 in Delaware en route from Baltimore to Brooklyn this afternoon. All members of the band have been hospitalized, as well as Michelle Cable from Panache Magazine and booking, who has been managing their tour.

Mana "China" Nishiura did not survive the accident. China was DMBQ's drummer, as well as the drummer in Shonen Knife. China will be missed.

Michelle Cable is conscious following surgery for a head injury. The other members of DMBQ are stable but sedated and are expected to recover.

That's all the information I have.

None of the bands tonite nor I felt up to a rock show following the news.

We are tentatively planning to continue with tomorrow's show @ Kingsland Tavern as a benefit to cover DMBQ's travel and medical expenses. If the bands and I decide we can't go through with the show, I'll send out a cancellation.

Thank you for you support and your understanding.

Todd

Impossibly sobering. I was at the show and everyone was just sort of standing around looking at each other, not knowing what to say or how to say it.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Saturday, 5 November 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

Horrifying. Not as tragic as the Exploding Hearts accident but only by a matter of degrees.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 November 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

god, that's terrible. i was just listening to essential sounds from the far east earlier. i hope the best for them.

i feel like a dolt because I had a chance to see them only earlier this year... at least i can still help them now, which is the most important thing.

in Seattle, the person who was flying the flag for them the most as far as "you HAVE to see these guys" was Mark Arm.. he was most responsible for spreading the word about their greatness here, outside the promoters, that is.

I only had heard the track on the Wall of Mirrors comp earlier this year, quite good I thought. It's very sad news. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 November 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I was going to see them today at WFMU's record fair...

nancyboy (nancyboy), Saturday, 5 November 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I was going to see them in Chicago in a few days... I wish there were more bands like them, now I'm not sure that there will be any.
Here's an excellent DMBQ live gallery for you:

Tourist from Japan killed in three-vehicle crash

A three-vehicle accident near the Delaware Memorial Bridge yesterday killed a female tourist, seriously injured another, and sent three other people to local hospitals, police said.

An Econoline van had crossed the bridge near Carneys Point in Salem County shortly before 1 p.m. when a Mitsubishi Eclipse clipped the van's left rear fender.

The van spun out of control, and careened over a barrier on the ramp to Route 40. The van - carrying four Japanese tourists and a woman from San Francisco - then rolled several times down an embankment and into the path of a Ford pickup truck, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, spokesman for the state police.

A woman from Osaka, Japan, who was not identified pending notification of her family, was ejected from the van and died at the scene. The four other van passengers were being treated last night for non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported, Jones said.

that's really sad. :( the weirdly impersonal news story makes it even sadder, somehow.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Saturday, 5 November 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

dang, that's terrible. I was just at one of their shows a couple weeks ago. it's very unsettling to think that someone you saw rocking out so recently isn't alive anymore :(

This is such sad news. They played here in Atlanta Wednesday before last and were really fucking unbelievable. The drumming was the best part, because they put the drum kit on the shoulders of all the audience and China got up there and drummed on top of these people--so cool! I loved that show, this is incredibly tragic.

I thought I just missed them at the WFMU fair yesterday. Horrible news, great band.

mcd (mcd), Sunday, 6 November 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

They were supposed to play in Detroit (Hamtramck) tomorrow night. I heard about this from the drummer of USAISAMONSTER at their show last night (they were supposed to play with DMBQ at the show in Brooklyn). Terrible, sad news. They played in Detroit earlier this year and were fantastic.

Wow, unbelievable. I've been listening to the Hall of Mirrors comp lately so I recognized the name. News is up on the Shonen Knife site as well...

I have been Shonen Knife's tour manager and FOH engineer for 10 years now and they are good friends. Mana (China) was their new drummer in 2003 when we had a 'comeback' tour that was both successful and very fun to do. Mana and I became good friends over the 6 weeks we travelled together and we taught each other english/japanese, even coming up with our own kind or japlish that no one else understood. We had postit stickies all over the van, drank coronas under the stars every night, drank bad roadside coffee (chairo mitsu - literally brown water) and I showed her my version of AMERICA, its greatness and its sadness... what can I say? It was one of those life changing tours and it will be with me forever. Her energy, attitude towards life and being a musician was an inspiration to me and anyone who met her. The only consolation I can take away with me is that she passed away doing exactly what she dreamed of - playing and touring with her DMBQ friends in the States.

I had the pleasure of hearing DMBQ's japanese released greatest hits album (remember, DMBQ are 10 albums into their career now) in 2004 when I visited her and other friends in Osaka and Tokyo. While there, Mana took me all over her Osaka, Kyoto (showed me her old haunts) and even came back to Tokyo with me to see me off - hospitality beyond belive for someone as busy as her.

What I heard on their record was as EXPLOSIVE and monstrous as anything I had ever heard. It is and will be my continuing honour to have hooked up Death From Above 1979 to act as support for DMBQs Japanese tour in late 2004 - quite possibly the best matchup anywhere last year.

When I finally crossed paths with them in Austin last year (imagine, Shonen Knife and DMBQ playing an hour apart across the street from each other) what I saw can only be described as the best rock show I had ever seen. I have been a tour manager and FOH engineer since 1990 and have been going to rock shows since I saw Motorhead in 1980 - none of the shows I have seen over the years have ever been as over the top and musically proficient as theirs was.

They will be sorely missed, and honestly, the saddest part of this is that had they one or two more years of the kind of touring schedule they were putting themselves through, they would have become one of the best known Japanese rock bands ever to come to America.

Thanks for letting me send some thoughts out there... it helps a bit to see some internet activity on this.

To those who posted who may have known China--

I'm putting together a short piece about the tragedy for Roctober Magazine, and I'm trying to collect some words from those who knew China personally. I'd like the piece to be primarily those thoughts. If any of you would be willing to contact me with your thoughts, I'd greatly appreciate it. pearlygrates@yahoo.com

Thanks
