is "I walk the line" gonna suck?

im really not sure at this point. i love the commercial where the guard asks Johnny/Joaquin not to sing songs that remind the prisoners they are in jail, and johnny replies "do you think they forgot?"

but i do hate Reese Witherspoon, yet hey, everyone can change. what do ya think?

Based on the preview/commercial, Phoenix's Cash impression is atrocious...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 5 November 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i think so too, i have a feeling that its more that "The Man In Black" Johnny Cash idea that Joaquin is going for than Cash himself. but still it might be fun, if you throw away preconcieved notions (maybe?)

"Why d'ya wear all that black, Johnny? People gonna think you're going to a funeral..."

"Maybe I am."

i saw it last week. it's entertaining, if a little light/glossy on the detail. I think it will/should prompt a re-evaluation of the acting abilities of both leads - Phoenix learnt to sing an octave lwoer than his natural range, and learnt the guitar from scratch, and sang everything; Witherspoon, er, sang everything herself anyway.

xpost yeah, it's full of great lines, and frequently very funny.

I felt the same way after the preview-on one hand, it looked cool, but on the other...there was the line about the funeral.

im sure i'll like it anyway, i really can't stop listening to San Quentin, even tho i got the damn thing months ago

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 6 November 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

so you don't really want to know if it sucks or not, then?

three weeks pass...
Did anyone have any idea that Dan Miller from Blanche was gonna play Luther Perkins? i was shocked, astounded, and ecstatically happy to see him on the screen when i saw it last night.

Hey, isn't there more to say about this?

What I want to know is: If the onstage marriage proposal is true, what about the part where AJ and Maybelle Carter run off the drug dealer with a shotgun when they're giving Cash forced detox?

That was my favorite scene, but impressive overall.

can we still "walk like an egyptian" and "trip the light fandango" ?

anti-resse fan, Monday, 20 March 2006 03:03 (nineteen years ago)

That onstage marriage proposal didn't really happen.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 20 March 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

Where does it say it didn't really happen? Wikipedia and Google disagree.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 20 March 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

allmusic disagrees too

gem (trisk), Monday, 20 March 2006 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

um, not that anybody has caught this yet but I meant AP Carter, of course. not "AJ".

I'm also curious about the incident where he comes on stage all fucked up and kicks the lights out, there was a later reference in the movie about this resulting in a Grand Ole Opry band but wikipedia is not helpful on this either.

I think I need more primary sources of info.

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 20 March 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

You'd be nuts to buy the soundtrack though wouldn't you?

dr lulu (dr lulu), Monday, 20 March 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed. Their performances are good and all, but... yeah.

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 20 March 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, if everybody had that attitude, then who would have bought The Blues Brothers soundtrack? Or The Commitments?

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Monday, 20 March 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Exactly! Utter shite too.
Oh, the Grand Ole Opry light smashing incident was caused by him dragging the mic stand behind as he strolled across the stage, breaking all the stage lights. He was so off his chops he didn't notice.

dr lulu (dr lulu), Monday, 20 March 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

i found a compilation of johnny and june duets for $10 in my local record shop last week. why would you spend $30 for a soundtrack of reese and joaquin?

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Well, you might be reese. Or Joaquin. Or their mums.

i watched about three quarters of it after buying it on dvd. we fell asleep. Joaquin just wasn't convincing as Johnny to me whereas I did think Reese's June Carter was, although I know bugger all about June Carter. Joaquin just seemed too distant, timid, I couldn't like him whereas Cash always struck me as a bit of a rogue with a dark history and a wicked wit. Or maybe that was just what he wanted people to believe.
