Still wish I could travel back in time and re-see the show I saw at Bumbershoot with Reggie, guys from Critters Buggin' and Michael Shrieve on drums, or at least had DVD/audio of same. Mind = blown.

Here's a review I could google:

Not much of a fan, I cut out after a few songs and headed back towards the Bumbrella Stage where Trilon were performing. Consisting of Brad Hauser (bass) and Skerik (sax) from Critters Buggin', Michael Shrieve on drums, Maktub's Reggie Watts on vocals and an additional percussionist, these five laid down some sweet, liquid grooves that had the packed flag pavilion shimmyin', shakin', laughin' and hangin' on their every move. It's always fun to watch Hauser kick out his trademark mercurial bass grooves, regardless of who he's playing with. Locked tight with Shrieve's drumming, they were the underlying current upon which Skerik and Reggie surfed. Those two were meant to play with one another and were simply amazing to watch! Playing a game of tag with each other's lines, Reggie would sing something and Skerik would blow the same line back at him through his tenor; sort of an ongoing musical knock-knock-who's-there. At one point Reggie started singing lines like he was calling out the rhythm to a tabla piece (in general, tabla players will sing the percussive lines they play before performing the piece on their tabla), and I couldn't help but wonder if he was aware of the practice. Memories of tabla maestro Vishal Nagar and his workshop at WOMAD USA came to mind [check out Earpollution's exclusive coverage of WOMAD USA 1999. --ed.] Reggie crooned, crowed, cockled and cackled, creating a large palette of monkey noises to amuse us. 100% improvisation, you could do nothing but smile and get down to the groove as Trilon held the crowd mesmerized with their performance.

one of the good things about reggie is that every show is pretty much unique. youtube is packed with dozens of one-off songs

started taping this; much prefer him doing his thing as opposed to scripted comedy. comedy bang bang always felt like him at his least interesting.

CBB is garbage. I'm glad he's basically doing a Paul Shaffer thing here. Also? Show is more fun than I'd expected it to be. James Corden was more together his first night than Seth Meyers is even now, and he's been on for over a year.

It’s almost like he knew his behavior in the relationship bordered on knowing he was contributing to charges related harm & he knew when to remove himself from the scene. Utterly disgusting. Any talent I thought he had is burned. What a horrible dude. Had a good friend & his wife really get into him right when he went kinda fasch brain - maybe I shoulda paid attention to that sign!

I actually was a fan until
several years ago when in what was then his newest comedy special that had a series of sketches interspersed among the standup that were so crashingly unfunny that it immediately turned my fandom into hate. Not saying that to pat myself on the back, or pull a “I never liked this guy”. Just thought it was interesting that some failed ideas made me immediately turn against him.

On a related ketamine note - largely thought it wasn't nearly as dangerous or addictive as other things out there until a friend of mine shared that his roommate was a self destructive addict, using it in the same way alcoholics use alcohol - as a means of escaping their problems and exasperating their poor mental health. He had to move out after overdosing on it - something I thought wasn't really possible (I thought "overdosing" was a thing only if you went in a K hole near a hot tub or pool). TIL.

i'm pretty sure ketamine is massively beneficial for people with treatment resistant depression (I am not, my ssris have worked ok for the past 11 or so years) but you're obviously not meant to be on it all the fucking time, day in and day out. I used to take plenty of psychedelics when I was younger and despite only really having a few 'bad' experiences, even the good ones wound up playing with my head after a while and it took quite some time to get over that. i did all of that of my own accord, I can't imagine what it's like to have someone insisting you ingest them when you aren't in the right headspace.

For over 15 years the Comedy Bang Bang podcast has had a theme song and bumper music by Reggie Watts (who used to be a frequent guest and was a regular cast member/bandleader on the TV show for its first few seasons). Big part of the brand. This morning, it’s gone. Scott Aukerman, the creator and host, has been very quick to ice out guests accused of bad behavior (Horatio Sanz and Thomas Middleditch come to mind). But still seems like a swift, telling move. Feels like an indictment…

As for ketamine I have definitely known people who found it therapeutic and helpful. But we are in a bit of a wild west phase for it where I wouldn’t necessarily trust people who are hawking its therapeutic benefits to really know how to harness them, or who is likely to experience them. As a therapist working a lot in the trauma world, and in a relatively woo woo region of the country, it feels like it’s everywhere.

Of course even with that there’s a far bridge to “therapeutic” from the guy we’ve all met who is evangelical about doing more and more drugs to expand your mind/contact the true nature of the universe or whatever. Combine that with toxic masculinity, ego, the inherent power imbalance of a civilian dating a wealthy celeb… yeah. This story is a dark one.

a friend of mine was dating a woman who was on ketamine all the time. it definitely sounds like it can be a great tool in the right therapeutic and medical context, but she seemed to be going to a bit of what they used to call "rock n' roll doctors" and was just getting it multiple times a week, i'd imagine in LA and in and around the entertainment biz there's probably many of these type of guys operating.
