Whatever happened to Neds Atomic Dustbin?

Always liked the dueling bass. Saw them about 6 years ago.

Poops McGee, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Reformed and playing live again...check wayahead.co.uk they did have some gigs listed a while back. While we're on the subject has anyone seen the wonderstuff in their latest incarnation?

el wanko, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They were great in their day, but if it's dueling bass you dig...seek ye the late, great Cop Shoot Cop!

Alex in NYC, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They were dreadfully shite after God Fodder. If you want duelling basses how about Rothko? It's all out bass-war...

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember dos on SST? Mike Watt & Kira.. just two basses. Nothing else, and very self-indulgent.

Andy, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cop shoot cop - alex, that band always interested me. lead me to more stuff.

Ned's - best forgotten about, don't you think?

paul brownell, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh heavens no. It's a beautiful name.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sadly, Cop Shoot Cop called it quits very acrimoniously. You can catch the full details (as well as some tasty mp3s) here:

http://thepolywog.com/copshootcop/index.htm

Lead Cop Tod [A]shley formed Firewater...sort've a different breed of cat, but still excellent. See here for details:

neds atomic dustbin not only have the worst name ever, but are quite possibly the worst band ever

gareth, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jon the drummer is a music teacher now. he's got a gold disk in his khazi. thats all i know. saw them 12 years ago. started the day's entertainment at reading festival. they were ok. blagged in to a gig in 93 and went down the pub after 4 tunes. wack.

dbini, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They were a part of my childhood. As a young teenager I spent many hours sitting outside Mike Lloyds Records waiting for members of Neds or Pop Will Eat Itself or The Wonderstuff to pop by and do the local hero thing.

(There wasn't much going on in Wolverhampton in the early nineties.)

Anna, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm, now we just have the joy of richard and the other one from BRA pissed in the custard factory the joy never ends!

el wanko, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bands like the Neds, Wonderstuff, PWEI and Mega City Four were extremely popular when i was at school in the late 80's early 90's. At the time i used to like a lot of the Death Metal Acts that John Peel used to play (like Death and early Entombed). Actually, i got into the Neds etc as they started to make crap records round about 1992. By then they had already been eclipsed in popularity by the experimental American acts like Truman's Water, Polvo, Pavement, Sebadoh etc, which were loads better in my opinion.

Alex G, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Happy, Green Cells Grey, Kill Your Telly.. all good stuff.

Craig, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Neds cover of Charlene's "Never Been To Me" (which a lot of people have as it's on that NME 40th birthday covers thing) is FANTASTIC.

Alan T, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
This is the only Ned's Atomic Dustbin thread. Mark Prindle says that the God Fodder album is great. Is he correct?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

No. But I like Kill Your Television.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 13 May 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

was it Q that declared brainbloodvolume a modern rock masterpiece ? i recall one magazine declaring it excellent ?

in fairness its good, solid hi-tech rock music, but i haven't played the thing in years.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 13 May 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

i stand by what i said above except for the bit about rothko

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 13 May 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

They sucked.
Somewhere on ILM there is a thread abour Neil Kulkarni's extremely classic review of brainbloodvolume (which tended toward the negative). If anyone can track that down via the search engine, the review itself is a truly shining example of constructive criticism.

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 13 May 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

i thought little of neil kulkarni's taste but i will agree with him if he disliked NAD's hideous second album.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 13 May 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Found it!
Does Britain need a new weekly diverse and radical music magazine? to take on NME's dull complacency

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 13 May 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

God Fodder *was* great, but is quite possibly awful now. Almost everything else they did, as electricsound says, was terrible at the time. I'd still give GF to fifteen-year-olds, though.

I liked Kulkarni mostly but that review just seems bitter about 18-yr-old nerds making friends

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 13 May 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

I heard "Not Sleeping Around" or wrhatever it's called on a tape I made in '92 or '93. Terrible. It's quite rare a song has no redeeming qualities for me.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 13 May 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

I'll unabashedly say I like God Fodder and Are You Normal? Especially "Two Plus Two Made Five" or whatever it was called. They certainly aren't indispensible, but I'd say they wrote at least a half-d0zen great songs, with "Happy" being my fave.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Friday, 13 May 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

God Fodder was their best....though it hasn't aged especially well. Are You Normal? was alright but a little bland. Discount Brainblood.. entirely. They were ultimately a singles band. They were lots of fun live, though, if you're a fan of needlessly silly leaping about.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 May 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

I kind of like Are You Normal? better than God Fodder, though I'll agree with the latter as the obvious pick. I like bands like this, these bands that would be total love-or-hate polarizing bands except that nobody cares that much about them anyway. I can’t imagine what problem anyone would have with them, apart from people who have issues with generally inoffensive hooky rock bands. Though I agree that Brainbloodvolume is pretty awful, so maybe that’s what everyone else was hearing all along. (Except! The single from that one, the soft/loud factory-beat one; that was kinda something.)

As for what happened to them, I dunno, and no, there was never a closet there, we just redid the drywall for effect.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 13 May 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

They do tour now and again, but it's never been the original five again, and they've never returned to the States. Jonn had his own new band for a brief spell....and no one noticed/cared.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 May 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

(Except! The single from that one, the soft/loud factory-beat one; that was kinda something.)

Was that "All I Ask Of Myself Is That I Hold It Together"?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 May 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

do they shower now? they were on the edge of crusty.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 14 May 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

i just watched the video for "grey cell green", shit sounded pretty great today for some reason.

Domm P))) (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 4 May 2009 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

"Kill Your Television" still sounds fresh to me, but lots of their stuff..... ummmm......... not so much.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 4 May 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

weird see cuz i just watched "kill your television" and it seemed pretty bad now.

Domm P))) (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 4 May 2009 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

Fair enough -- that's pretty much how I perceive "Grey Cell Green."

Alex in NYC, Monday, 4 May 2009 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

"De-SI-re!"

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 00:03 (sixteen years ago)

I love "Capital Letters" off that first album. The line "she'll break some hearts when she grows up/mine is one" kills me, though it looks corny written out like this.

dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 01:28 (sixteen years ago)

God, "I'm Not Sleeping Around" polluted college radio far too long in '93.

I'm crossing over into enterprise (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 01:44 (sixteen years ago)

IT'S IN-SIDE MEEEEEEEEE

Domm P))) (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 05:22 (sixteen years ago)

re-united.

Neds will play God Fodder from start to finish in London, the city where it was recorded, on Saturday 19th December 2009 at 02 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Needless to say, Neds will be playing the rest of your faves too. This will be Ned’s only other club show of 2009.

mark e, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 06:38 (sixteen years ago)

It has been found...

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 13:28 (sixteen years ago)

OK I'll admit it - I still love "Grey CEll Green". In fact, I listened to it on my way into work.

ENBB, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 13:42 (sixteen years ago)

Happy is still a fave of mine, Grey Cell Green not far behind.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 13:52 (sixteen years ago)

who the hell is clamoring for a live performance of God Fodder by a long gone "120 minutes" band?

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

Ned's Atomic Raggett

I'm crossing over into enterprise (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

Indeed.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

Ned's Atomic Trifle works more, though.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

ned, what DID happen to your atomic dustbin? what if that thing fell into the hands of al-qaeda or something??

juniper jazz (haitch), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

the most useless reunion ever? they were shite then, they will be even worse now. additionally i don't get that thing about playing old popular albums from start to finish today. that's extremely uncool. has rock music mutated into some sort of modern classic or what?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

I always managed to avoid them for the most part, but I did like 'Happy' quite a bit.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

Can seriously see this being some sort of tipping point for the whole 'play the album from start to finish' gig thing

display mane (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

IT HAS BEEN FOUND!

Domm P))) (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

This is one of those bands, that like...made a lot of sense when I was 20 years old, but damn I'd feel mighty weird listening to them now.

Smart, Long, Lifephones (Bimble), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

first song to come up on random today for my bike ride into work? grey cell green.

Saint Etienne are doing Foxbase Alpha in order for 2 shows in London this year.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

saint etienne? really? another shit band of the 90s. foxbase alpha again? that is vile.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, i completely disagree with you. Foxbase Alpha is one of my favorite albums. Performing it in order is going to be great.

BTW, New Order were the first band I ever heard of doing this when they played Substance in order during a California show in 87 or 88.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

Pink Floyd, Yes, Gong etc used to do it all the time back in the day.

everything, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

Substance is a singles collection, though, and NO would just have been doing it to be contrary.

Seriously, this "playing albums live" shit is an abomination. I was cross about it earlier on, too, when I read about some other fucking no-marks reforming to do it (can't remember who, though). Self-important fannybawed dicks.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

The only band who's done that thing right was Sparks last year, when they did literally every album in that London stand -- if you're going to go, go all in. And even then the whole point of the conclusion of the run, when they performed their newest album in full for the first time and then at the end of the set 'burned' all their previous albums one by one until only the newest remained, was that the past was and is nice and comforting and all but they're focused on the present.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 19:19 (sixteen years ago)

Mastodon has been doing the whole album thing for their latest album on the current tour and it works pretty well, considering its a concept album. They put on a hell of a show, so I'm not willing to entirely dismiss the whole "play album front to back" quite yet.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

who the hell is clamoring for a live performance of God Fodder by a long gone "120 minutes" band?

dudes they "reformed" in 2000 and just play a Christmas show every year, this is obv just a fun way to make the tenth iteration of that slightly different

rebel without a cape (sic), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

Not for nothin', but I flew over to see the Wonder Stuff's reunion shows in London in 2000. I'm sure there are plenty who'd do the same for the Neds.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

That's a totally different case, though, as you say! Given the nature of the new album, I can't really see what else they could do ... but if they rock up in 10 years' time and say, right, FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY we're doing Blood Mountain in its entirety or something, they too will go on the dicks-to-suck list.

And anyway: Mastodon are a band with more than one song worth listening to, unlike the bloody Neds.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 12:19 (sixteen years ago)

Fair enough, esp on that last point! I was just playing devil's advocate and pointing out that the entire concept isn't rubbish. Doing it for pure nostalgia kinda is, though I have to admit to having loved seeing Sonic Youth doing Daydream Nation. That was fun.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

I think it's basically down to whether or not you are a huge fan of the band or not. I mean sensible types will say "Sparks -yay! Neds - LOL!" but there's a handful of mentalists, probably in the North of England who have not only been waiting for this for 15 years, but are also wishing the Mega City 4 were doing Tranzophobia at the same show. With 8 months to go until this legendary event occurs, I'm anticipating something bizarre like this being added to the bill.

The only time I've seen this done was when Brian Wilson did Pet Sounds at the Puyallup Fair, but if memory serves, he mixed up the running order and maybe played some extra songs in the middle. I love him so it was great.

everything, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

I was listening back through a lot of their stuff, since Anna was talking about them on Freakytrigger radio show -- the good stuff still sounds great to me, although I suppose I don't have any big feelings for some of the, umm, deeper cuts. But I listened through most of the odd-and-ends compilation and enjoyed the hell out of it.

nabisco, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

horrible video but the audio is pretty XD w/ crowd participation

Haha there is a vocals-and-strings version of "Cut Up!" And "Twenty-Three-Hour Toothache!" And "Flexible Head!" And "45 Second Blunder!"

nabisco, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

"God Fodder" is a fun record from a happy time. Classic album? No. But it's got a lot of good songs on it. "Happy", "Kill Your Television", "Until You Find Out", and "Grey Cell Green" all still sound great to me. I'm glad to hear that they're still playing together.

Totally gay for Obama (j-rock), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, god, I remember my flatmate playing me that vocals-and-strings version of Cut Up many years ago. I think I liked it, actually. Then again, I'd have been stoned, so ...

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

seven months pass...

I went to the God Fodder show tonight, and I agree with the post about this being the beginning of the end for the "play the classic album" format (although I did like being able to go to the bar/bog after about song 8 without worrying abut missing anything) because come on now...

But I was kinda shocked that I knew pretty much all the words to every song. I must like them more than I thought I did! Or I just listened to that album so much at school it's ingrained in my brain. It was a really fun gig.
