vintage lonesome

so i was listening to hank williams' rambling man today, and trying to compile some vintage songs that have that real lonesome feel. i'm not picky about genre, but am just looking for songs that have really excellent, weary, comforting, yet alienated lyrics that were before their time. any thoughts?

Hank Williams is good for that. 70's era Neil Young ablums for sure. what about Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline? And Townes Van Zandt too? for some reason i can't think of non-country/folk that is comfortingly lonesome in this way.

Various versions of "St. James Infirmary" would qualify. As would Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell," which is built on the "St. James" melody.
