after a somewhat slow start - 'six japanese gardens' integration of tape w/ a solo instrument didn't quite hit the mark - she's beginning to grow on me: "graal theatre" is an excellent piece.

anyone heard "L’amour de loin"?

It premiered during the months I lived in Paris; I didn't hear it, but I did see a TV feature on it, which included (1) some excerpts from the music, and (2) Peter Sellars, who directed, speaking about the work in French.

Unfortunately my memory of the music has been eclipsed by my memory of Sellars's appallingly bad pronunciation (e.g. "C'était très triste" became "say-tay tray treest".)

I'm quite fond of an earlier piece for ensemble with live electronics, called Lichtbogen, but I haven't liked more recent things as much. Never heard "graal theatre" though; I'll have to check it out.

Hmm, all I have is "Six Japanese Gardens" but I think it's great. I love weird percussion stuff though.

Get thee to a record store and acquire the killer pieces for orchestra and electronics "du cristal" and " . . . a fumee", seriously she is pretty damn amazing on those.

I found some of the pieces in "six..." to be too self-conciously busy, the perc ws my favourite on that bcz it isn't an inherently expressive instrument compared to cello so it played off v differently from all the others.

one month passes...
"du crtistal" is a piece I've been enjoying lately.

This is on a tip from another ilxer and I thought I'd mention Chaya Czernowin: I think she has a similar breadth of expression and the disc with "Afatism" is well worth chasing and "Shu Hai Practices Javelin" has a so-so voice/electronics interlude to the orchestral work.

fourteen years pass...

she's composer of the week on R3. This is the first I've heard of her and mainly reviving thread to remind me to listen to loads of her work later.

Love Saariaho, never noticed this thread.

Du cristal… à la fumée is a great start, as are all her other early monographs for Ondine. Her post-L'amour de loin material gets quite patchy, alas.

weird, I was just thinking about her and revisiting her work recently (via my attempts to get into the spectralists)

I seriously contemplated a cross country trip to see it.

I bought the stream and watched it Friday. Just devastating and I think Saariaho’s best opera by far.
